Has anyone tried using a laptop as a software synth, sending midi data via USB one way and audio data the other way?

It seems possible, but I couldn't find any discussions/threads...

Pretty common setup for decades- use a USB  Audio Interface with built in 5 pin MIDI I/O ( Scarlett 2i2. etc)

This video below  is worth watching for guitarists running Jam Origin MIDI GUITAR app, which can convert audio to MIDI in real time  to trigger soft synths on a computer

If you mean using SY-1000 as a guitar to midi and audio soundcard over usb.
Yes it's common practice, both live and in studio.
The GTM in SY isn't the best, I'd say it's subpar but usable for some software synth applications.
I use SY like that at times but GP-10 is my choice since it's imho the best gtm of the modeling/soundcard units.

I play Country music too, I'm just not sure which country it's from...

I definitely was asking specifically about the SY-1000 as both GTM and synth playback via USB.

I wonder if there are parameters to tweak on the Sy1000 to improve the GTM. I don't know why Roland wouldn't just clone the GP10 tech into a newer product. The potential is there for an ultimate customizeable modeling brain whereby you can use your own pcm synth via USB and your own cabinet/amp I/R in the effects loop. I'm getting pretty good at piano and drums on the GR-55, but it would be nice to have a serious piano engine or custom drum palette.

I've been a GR-55 user as my primary tone engine on all gigs since 2015... and I hotrodded tube amps and rackmount preamps, built speaker cabinets, etc before that, fyi.
