I have a new plan, stupid and simple. I never used it, had forgotten it existed, but getting digital audio from a VG-99 is easy, with that ancient thing called SPDIF. VG-99 has it, called "Digital Out" so that will work, no device driver needed. Yeah, it will take some doing, adapters and such. Like this, sort of Cubilux USB C SPDIF Receiver Can't find a SPDIF in - Optical out gadget though. Except maybe this, I have an Edirol UA-5. Remember that? Roland doesn't Image Not Available Wonder if it still works...

and this will do it

I still dream to convert the USB 8-channel digital audio stream from the SY-1000 to analog 8-channel audio, without involving a cumbersome PC in the middle...

I got my VG-99 connected to the Mac M2 with a few bumps. Sample rate must be set to 44.1, fine, but certainly not the default these days. When SPDIF doesn't work, it just doesn't, wiggling wires, swearing, nothing helps.

In debugging I dug out my old Edirol UA-5, which has SPDIF I/O coax and optical. Here's the shocker. Connect its USB to Sonoma and it shows right up, no driver install needed. Cool but why can't the VG-99 do that trick too? Roland's most recent UA-5 driver is for Snow Leopard 2009. Its coax input crackles so I won't use it, amazing that it still works. I used it with Win98 back in the day.

The digital out sounds really nice, no hiss at all, very clean. I want to use it so that I can keep my normal analog signal chain for my ears without changing it for recording.
