What are the Speaker Differences in each Katana Amp?

The main differences are the wattage, impedance and construction of the speakers.
Each speaker is designed for it's respective amplifier wattage and impedance.

KATANA-50 SPEAKER SPECS

Katana-50 1x12's use a 8 ohm speaker at 50 watts and a smaller voice coil.

KATANA-100: SPEAKER SPECS

Katana 1x12's use an 8ohm speaker at 100 watts.

Katana 2x12's use two 16ohm speakers to equal an 8ohm at 100 watts.

Something to point out is that these are not full range speakers.
Guitar speakers are mid-range and have a midrange focus to them.
A big part of their character is speaker distortion. The important thing to know is that tube amplifiers as well as WAZA, Blues Cube, and Katana dynamically respond to the constantly moving speaker impedance.

1 )Katana Patches - From the Boss Tone Central site - those contained in the  Katana area are the only ones that work. Those in the SY-300, GP-10, GT-100 will not work with Katana.
Here are the known sources for Katana patches

2) Question about assigning effects to the knobs.  - not possible at this time , been told future firmware should address this ( 7 months away)

But if mid gig, you move the Katana Amp knobs and like the sound and want to store them,  Just press and hold the "TONE SETTING" Amp CH channel button for the currently selected Amp Channel for a second and the changes you made will be saved to that channel. (rather like storing a favorite station on an old car radio)

3) Question about the foot controller effects button. - it defaults to selecting the 5 available "Amp Channels" .

Press the "Effects" button on far right and now the buttons on the left select the on / off status of each available Katana FX, for the currently selected "Amp Channel"  . There is also a tap tempo for time based effects.  Should become  obvious if you own GA-FC ( the only multi button foot controller that works, and have applied the Katana overlay labels on your GA-FC
http://www.fichier-pdf.fr/2017/04/11/katanagafcoverlay/

4) No need to tweak with a computer , for me I knew Katana works for my intended use ( grab & go sit in with a band  and rehearsal on short notice ) right out of the box no computer needed Plug in Les Paul, set all controls to "noon" and go play any stage  - if you can not find useable tones after 15 minutes  - sell it and pass it along to someone else

Inside the Katana Head / 100 combo box there is a sticker you apply to the GA-FC Footswitch
The GA-FC Foot Switch connects with a 1/4" TRS cable to Katana Head / 100 combo
(GA-FC is NOT supported on Katana 50 112)

On the far Right the "EFFECTS" switch toggles the GA-FC operation modes.

GA-FC Foot Switch Default mode is
* Channel Select Mode (selecting the 5 channels on Katana 100 / Head)
(CH1, CH2, CH3, CH4, Panel (manual settings))

or

* FX Select Mode  - toggle FX On/Off ( Booster/Mod, Delay/FX, Tap Tempo, Reverb, FX Loop )

Also you can add two Roland EV-5 Expression Pedal to the GA-FC Footswitch for Volume and Wah

One EXP pedal is dedicated Volume,
the other EXP pedal is Volume, unless the WAH effect is engaged, then it does WAH.
WAH is the only effect it can control, despite being labelled as 'FX'.

OVERVIEW
A massive amount of power and versatility in a do-all 2x12 combo.

Katana—the traditional sword carried by the historic samurai of Japan—is a symbol of honor, precision, and artistry in Japanese culture. Adopting the majestic sword's name with pride, the Katana series presents guitar amplifiers with smooth, cutting tones honed by generations of dedication and expertise. Born of the development process behind the acclaimed Waza amplifier, these innovative amps embody BOSS's determined pursuit of the ultimate rock sound. Featuring proprietary circuit designs and meticulous tuning, the Katana series combines traditional craftsmanship and breakthrough functions to produce true next-generation rock amplifiers.

With 100 watts of power and a pair of custom 12-in. speakers, the Katana KTN-100 delivers a commanding range of gig-worthy tones that gracefully slice through any band scenario. The amp also excels for home playing, with a uniquely efficient design and innovative Power Control that provides inspiring sound and response at low volumes. In addition, the Katana KTN-100 includes integrated access to 55 BOSS effects, which are customizable using the free BOSS Tone Studio editor software. Up to 15 different effects can be configured in the amp at one time, enabling you to bring fully prepared tones to the stage in one amp.

A Refined Amp with Inspiring Tone
Designed for guitarists who are serious about their sound, the Katana KTN-100 offers exceptional tone and touch response for stage playing, recording, and simply practicing at home. The custom 12-in. speakers are driven by a special method developed for the flagship Waza amp that optimizes the speaker and cabinet character. This gives you authoritative punch and cutting presence previously attainable only with high-end amp designs. In combination with the five selectable amp characters, the Katana KTN-100 produces class-defying power and expressiveness to meet any playing situation.

Five Original Amp Characters, Honed for Rock Playing
Sharpened to perfection by the BOSS engineering team, the Katana KTN-100's five amp characters offer everything from organic vintage tones to modern high-gain sounds. Clean is natural and transparent, while Crunch offers satisfying grit and response. Lead has a wide gain range to suit many styles, from fat, stinging blues solos to fluid legato shredding. With DNA inherited from the Waza amp, Brown delivers refined high-gain tone sought after by the world's greatest rock players. The Acoustic character further enhances the Katana's versatility, providing optimized tone that makes acoustic-electric guitars sound stunningly natural.

Leave Your Pedalboard at Home
With its built-in BOSS effects and recallable Tone Settings, the Katana KTN-100 lets you perform anywhere with just a guitar and amp. Connecting to BOSS Tone Studio via USB provides access to 55 effects that are fully customizable for your needs. Going beyond standard distortion, delay, and reverb, the selection also includes powerful tone-shapers like pitch shifting, ring mod, slicer, and more. You can load 15 different effects in the amp at one time and use up to three simultaneously. Four Tone Settings let you store custom amp and effects setups for instant recall, and you can always jump to the current panel settings at the touch of a button. It's also possible to connect optional footswitches and expression pedals for hands-free control on the gig.

Grab-and-Go Operation
While the Katana KTN-100 includes many advanced features, it's amazingly simple to operate. Dedicated knobs for multiple gain stages, three-band EQ, and presence allow you to quickly dial in your tone by ear, just as you would with a standard tube amp. Essential effects parameters are adjusted with a simple knob twist, and memories can be stored with a brief button hold. The Power Control is great for throttling back the volume for small stages and home playing, and also includes a Standby setting that mutes the sound for switching guitars or taking breaks. And by flipping out the integrated tilt stand, you can easily angle the amp back for better sound projection.

BOSS Tone Central
At the BOSS Tone Central website, you'll find numerous free amp and effects setups for the Katana series. Created by pro guitarists, these setups provide ready-to-play sounds for various music styles, and also make great starting points for building your own sounds. They load into the memories in a Katana amp via the BOSS Tone Studio editor software, which is also available at the site. In addition to Katana effects selection and customization, BOSS Tone Studio gives you a convenient way to organize all your Katana setups for different gigs, recordings, and practice sessions.

Hi,

For the two banks of channels, the delay2, global eq, loop level, and other effects, i understand how it works.
But for Assignable CC# and Program change to the Katana channels and Pedal Functions... could you explain to a non midi expert what does it mean?

thanks
fifi

QuoteWhat if you have something like a Boss GT-10 multi FX unit? Would you be able to use the midi function to at least control the amp switching?

On a Katana Head or Artist - yes

Connect a 5 pin MIDI cable from GT-10 MIDI Out to Katana Head / Artist MIDI input

Two tone Settings let you store custom amp and effects setups for instant recall, and you can always jump to the current panel settings at the touch of a button. It's also possible to connect optional footswitches and expression pedals for hands-free control on the gig.
Grab-and-Go Operation

While the Katana-50 includes many advanced features, it's amazingly simple to operate. Dedicated knobs for multiple gain stages and three-band EQ allow you to quickly dial in your tone by ear, just as you would with a standard tube amp.

I said it elsewhere, but the Katana 50 for $199 could be an absolute steal. The Marshall CODE 25 is a nice little modeller (FWIW, I think it sounds WAY better than the CODE 50), but if the K50 sounds better than it, or the CODE 50, then it is a real steal, and gives me exactly what I would want in a practice amp.

I really like what I heard in that 10-minute K100 demo.

Bridged Amplifier Switching Hybrid) amplifiers, introduced in the mid 1990s as a 'best of both worlds' solution for audio amplification, combine the sound quality of Class AB with the efficiency of a Class D amplifier. While a Class AB amp uses fixed supply voltage regardless of input signal, BASH uses power supply modulation to track the input signal, supplying only the necessary voltage to its Class AB amp.

FWIW - Bulk of Roland / Boss gear have not been "Made in Japan" for at least a decade now

Boss Katana Amps are no exception ( they are built in Malaysia)

The "Japan" label on the rear of the Katana Amps has more to do with CARB (California Air Resources Board) compliance ( or "How do I contact the manufacturer to complain about the wood glue fumes?"(!)
Due to its asia sourced particle wood cabinet and potential formaldehyde glue emissions

The Aux in and Phones out are TRS Stereo

Katana is a good solution for songwriters, as its also a very good low latency 24 bit audio interface and allows reamping

While the Katana amp and all FX are Mono, The PHONES/REC OUT jack provides a path to monitor stereo audio from the Stereo Aux Input jack or the USB Audio connected computer.

Katana FX Loop is buffered on send and return and fed from the DSP by its own D/A and A/ D with programmable gains on send and return and configurable for either series or  parallel signal flow.

This looks set to be Boss's new flagship amp series, taking a lot from the amazing Waza amp range. They're versatile, responsive and have a whole load of breakthrough technology on board to make it a really exciting range of amps. Whilst they're not valve amps, all five of the on-board amp characters - Clean, Crunch, Lead, Brown and Acoustic have been expertly crafted by guys who are very serious about tone. The cleans are nice, but personally I love the distorted tones; great for a range of rock players. With it being a Boss product, you've also got access to 55 Boss effects within the amp that you can select and edit by linking the amp up with your computer. The Boss Katana range consists of a 1x12 50w combo, 1x12 100w combo, 2x12 100w combo and a 100w head that even has a small built in speaker so you can practice quietly without a cab.

Katana Live Gig Settings

Crank up the MASTER  ( on the far right ) to 2:00 o clock - 3:00 o clock = 3/4 up. and find the POWER CONTROL wattage Setting that works best for the room.

I use a Katana 100-112 , but only use the 100 watt Power mode when i want clean Dick Dale surf music tones.

i typically use the 50 watt mode for Blues / Rock gigs

Now move over to the left
Adjust the GAIN to set the Distortion you desire, adjust the VOLUME to taste.
if you want less Distortion  - Lower the gain below 9:00 o clock ,adjust the VOLUME to taste. - even on Max full up if you need it to be louder . If your clean tone is still not loud enough, go back to the right and raise the MASTER or raise the POWER CONTROL setting to higher watts until your clean sound works for the room and your band situation - do that first before  proceeding !

if you want more Distortion,  raise the GAIN, adjust the  VOLUME to taste.

I treat the  VOLUME knob ( on the left)  to set the current Amp level, and I assign a different VOLUME setting for Rhythm vs the VOLUME for my LEAD SOLO tones

By contrast
If I want the worst Katana experience with lots of buzz and poor tone -  on the far right, lower the MASTER to 8:00 o' clock ( less than a 1/3rd way up )  and crank  the Gain and Volume ( both on the left ) to the max

in the EQUALIZER  - dont be afraid to try Bass / Middle / Treble settings that appear completely alien from a genuine tube amp tone stack on a Fender / Marshall

You just might find "your sound" when all three are set to "2" ( like 8:00 o clock )

The point is Experiment with different Amp types and EQUALIZER settings - but I find the best Katana tones DO NOT occur when all knobs on the left are maxed out on "11".

An dont Forget to use your Guitar's Volume Knob - the Katana High Gain Patches all Clean up when you back your Guitar Volume knob down

The good news is many guitarists today are baffled and resell their Katana after a week ,  - I picked up mine gently used at deep discount because the prior owner didnt read this thread. There is profit in confusion

The whole strategy with leaving the master volume high is exactly what Jeff Slingluff the -Roland rep mentioned way way back in October (that most people couldn't wrap their brain around ) but now that I've been playing the Katana six months , I totally understand it now and why I posted my Katana live gig Tone strategy here

Hi, I'm Jeff the product manager for BOSS Guitar product in the United States. I hope you don't mind me joining in to answer your question.

The 1x12 and 2x12 Katana's use exactly the same electronics with the only difference being the cab size and the use of two speakers. The 1x12 uses an 8ohm speaker and the 2x12 uses two 16ohm speakers. But they are the same design and voicing.

As far as sound, yes the 2x12 has a bigger bolder push and the comes off as having more bass. Also speaker combination comb filtering things that happen in the air that make some players prefer a 2x12 or 4x12 over a 1x12 experience. If you traditionally like speaker configuration over the other you might want to consider that with your buy decision.

Both the 1x12 and the 2x12 have a bit more bass response than the 50 watt. If you get the Kantana my suggestion for you is to start with the Channel Volume and Master Volume at max and use the Power Control feature to lower it down to digest-able home volume. This way the virtual vintage transformer, power tubes, phase inverter and such all gets pushed like typically happens in all those classic non-master volume amps we love. Always remember in non-master volume tube amps, or even virtual ones, the last tubes in the chain clips first. So my suggestion is start of running it like a non-master volume amp to get that Tele of yours pushing power amp character. Get all that transformer tone and feel and use the Power Control Knob to turn it down to fun level. I'm sure you'll find your own settings this just sounds like a fun place to start for you and your Tele.

I hope that helps.

I'm really impressed with these so far. I'm tempted to pre-order the head. $350 just seems ridiculous for what you get.

You mean rediculously low cost compared to a $1,300 Blues Cube Head

The Katana Head unique with its 5" speaker. And USB reamp capability. Much better sound than a Vypyr.

^ Yup, just so much amp for so little...especially with the MIDI control on the head. I was skeptical, but all the demos sound great.

I guess a Roland logo is worth $1000 more than one from Boss (WAZA excluded)...but those Blues Cubes do sound pretty freaking nice.

Oh, and no silly tone capsules on the Katanas...

Is there a possibility of a Katana group buy?

I am interested in the head.

Best to telephone Zzounds / AMS  and negotiate your best deal

(My Katana Head arrives this Friday from Zzounds )

Group buys are tough to negotiate, do nothing for supporting the costs of running our forum and recent Roland /Boss deals  were not that significant saving

The Antares ATG Group buy is significant

Thanks Elantric, great points.

I'll be very curious to hear how you like the internal 5" speaker, as that would be my main intended speaker to use, either straight into the amp with a magnetic pickup guitar, or thru the GP10 and into the effects return with a GK guitar.

One thought for DIY folks

If seeking a decently loud 12" 8 ohm closed back cab for Boss Katana head, buy a new Cube 80GX currently on sale for $219 with free shipping , and mod the Cube-80GX by adding a direct connect speaker jack for its internal 12" Speaker for use as as extension Speaker cab

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Cube80GX

Ive verified that Roland used the same 12" speaker in
* Cube-80X
* Cube-80XL
* Cube-80GX

FWIW - the "dark sounding" Cube-80GX is a result of its electronics, not the speaker.

I note that the Katana has the Slicer effect. Does the head have midi clock functions?

It's true there are missing download links on the official Boss Katana 100-112 and 100-212 pages

There are working URL links here:

It's the same Firmware , USB driver and Boss Tone studio for all Katana versions

For the Katana Amp owners completely new to using a PC/Mac to edit your FX - here are some tutorials

Katana Owners Manual
https://static.roland.com/assets/media/pdf/KATANA_e02_W.pdf

Work slowly - in this sequence

1) Update the Katana Amp firmware
https://www.boss.info/us/support/by_product/katana-100_212/updates_drivers/eaa1f675-cdcc-49f3-ae33-1d8d9466bf91/

2 ) Install the Katana USB Driver for your operating system ( Win /OSX)

* Boss Katana USB Driver for Windows 10
https://www.boss.info/us/support/by_product/katana-100_212/updates_drivers/077c869d-0c3f-4d46-a2c7-fa6b96257fff/

* Boss Katana USB Driver for Windows 7/8/8.1

After you download the USB driver, Be sure to double click it to expand all files and locate the "README.HTM" file and click on it and your browser will open with Katana Driver Instructions
with all the detailed USB Driver installation procedure

3 ) * Install the Boss Tone Studio for Katana - this requires Adobe AIR and fast internet connection.

Read the Boss Tone Studio for Katana Owners Manual PDF
https://static.roland.com/assets/media/pdf/BTS_KATANA_e01_W.pdf

Hint - you need a live internet connection during the BTS install - I have better success by installing Adobe AIR first - get it here

QuoteDoes the head have midi clock functions?

No

for Katana Head - These are the MIDI commands it supports.

For ultimate control of both Katana and GT1 look at the primovasound MIDX-20

Thanks Elantric.

The Slicer is not as effective without midi clock. It just drifts away from you.

Would Codesmart's PrimovaSound MIDX-10 / MIDX-20 usb to midi convertor work for program changes on the 100watt combo?
https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=17561.200
I'd rather get the combo than the head because down the track I might go stereo and 2 heads and 2 cabinets is not on.
