I tend to use the UPS at gig locations where I suspect faulty wiring or if I'm using the Kemper ( to avoid the 40 second reboot should power dip mid song) or if I'm out in the middle of park running off a gas generator - These UPSs can clean up an otherwise background low level "whine" that can enter the audio path from the Honda AC mains power Generator

and I always bring two of these

Those power reels look very handy and the idea of leaving the UPS in the car unless needed appeals as well. You have a lot more gear than I do (ya think?) and use it in a much wider variety of situations to mix and match gear to meet specific needs. My approach is a bit different.  I'm hoping to put together one rig which is both light and flexible enough to meet a variety of smaller venue needs. I think my rig as pictured is pretty capable and I can probably just  add an expression pedal and call it a day. Now I just need to figure out how I'm going to put the gear on a pedal board, pack up the rig, and go mobile.

I'm looking for a dual expression pedal for my VL3 so that I can have one axis used for patch specific parameters and the 2nd axis for global vocal volume control for my over ear mic. Something like this but easily available and perhaps not as pricey. Any favorites?

Fender briefly re-issued the old 60's "Volume+Tone Pedal back in 2008 - look for a used one and that can be modified to become a dual axis expression pedal by changing the internal control pots to 50k Linear type

I have the Fuzz-Wah variation of that pedal.  Cool effect, but the chassis is as heavy as some of my amps!

That Fender pedal looks interesting if a bit hard to find. I found one listing but I've no experience with Reverb. Looks a bit like a music Craigslist.

https://reverb.com/item/267069-fender-volume-and-tone-pedal-chrome-best-volume-pedal-made

Then there's the mod. Not exactly the roomiest pedal to work with although I might give it a try anyway. I know the VL3 doesn't always match up well with some expression pedals and you need to set the range to something like 50% min to 90% max to get the pedal to respond throughout the full sweep of the pedal. Craig from TC-Helicon has a video about set up where he suggests this.

I take it that the 50k linear pot would allow you to set min to 0% and max to 100% using the full sweep of the pedal and that's exactly what I want. With an over ear mic I can't step away from the mic and so the volume pedal will need to be used to emulate changing distance from the mic; like stepping away to sneeze or some such. I had an old Morley BWV Volume Wah pedal hooked up to my VL3 yesterday using a trs -> ts + tr splitter but I couldn't get the volume working correctly no matter where I set the min and max. I was in GC ordering my mic and decided to drop a few bucks on a Fender 250k pot just to try modding the pedal. No luck though as the Morley doesn't use a treadle system. All in all maybe just going with a toggle type pedal might work better. Less control but probably not as finicky when you're trying to change one axis while keeping the other axis steady.

Re: the 2-axis expression pedal, the only other alternative I can think of is the Zoom "Z-pedal", but these are incorporated into multi-effects, so you're not going to save money, and they're going to take up a lot of space.  Which is OK if you can put the Zoom effects to use, but that's a whole different question.

Personally, for what you describe:

Quoteone axis used for patch specific parameters and the 2nd axis for global vocal volume control for my over ear mic

...I wouldn't recommend a 2-axis pedal anyway.  It's a very cool concept, but in practice it is difficult to change one axis with your foot without having an impact on the other.  Since your vocal volume will tend to be set-and-forget (at least relative to what you'll be doing with that patch-specific parameter), you're better off with a separate pedal.  Or even better IMO, a knob/potentiometer for your vocal volume. Mount it on your mic stand or something - MUCH easier to control reliably.

EDIT:  Never mind re: the mic stand as you specified over-ear mic, but the rest holds.

The problem is that the gear I'm talking about hasn't arrived yet and so I'm in the land of theory rather than practical experience. The over ear mic I ordered is a DPA D:fine omni (DPA).

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/dfineOmniT

In theory, I'm going to want a hands free, easily accessible, volume control. Why? Because I can't control the volume by altering the distance to the DPA; the DPA is a fixed distance from my mouth. So if I'm laying down a guitar rhythm while singing and want to move into a nice throaty rock growl then I'm probably clipping as the volume of my voice increases; unless I can use a volume pedal to back off the gain a bit as my voice volume rises.  Also, as mentioned above, I need a way to drop the volume to zero quickly unless I want to amplify every cough, sneeze, and sniffle for the enjoyment of the audience.

@I wouldn't recommend a 2-axis pedal anyway.  It's a very cool concept, but in practice it is difficult to change one axis with your foot without having an impact on the other

But I think you bring up some good points and I've been considering them as well. A dual access pedal would probably be a great tool once mastered but it really does add another level of complexity and fine motor control into an already complex situation such as playing and singing and controlling effects. Then, as you mentioned there's the issue of board space. My VL3 and GP-10 together have me at 24" before adding anything else to the board and so saving on space and weight is a real consideration for me. That's why I wanted one pedal to plug into both of the VL3's expression pedal jack's; increased capability with minimal space usage. I'm still looking for a TRS AB toggle pedal but they seem to be about as common as unicorns. Thanks for your input and now back to my regularly scheduled questing:)

My new mic is a DPA D:fine 4088 matched with an XLR adaptor.

http://www.dpamicrophones.com/en/products.aspx?c=item&category=269&item=24062

I wasn't noticing them go on sale much but I was able to get a Guitar Center guy who cuts me some deals to take over 20% off for me so GC gets a shout out from me on this one. I had an omni but it dashed my hopes with feedback and so I had to exchange for the directional model instead. I've not had as much time to work with it as I'd like since I've been busy building the mobile rig. My early impressions are good though. Handles voice and flute well although it's a battle to play harmonica without picking up excessive air sounds. Ties me down a bit but it frees me up in other ways. Color me pleased overall.

On another note the entire rig tears down and fits inside the trunk and guitar backpack soft case so it's one trip for one man. There's room for a PA sub and second speaker on top. The whole thing glides effortlessly over pavement but it's heavy so two people would be needed for stairs. I'll need some different patch cords to get my setup/teardown times maximized.

Teardown took 16 minutes but a bit of practice and tweaking should see it well under 10.

And here I was assuming I was thinking inside the box;)

On another note I've been having some issues with the website for the last 12 hours or so. The "read unread posts" often cycles the same posts that I've already read and I get an error when I try to log out. Intermittent issues and I'm not sure if it's on my end or VGuitar's. Just a head's up and I'll keep an eye on it.

OK, thanks for the update and all your hard work. Absolutely one of my favorite hangouts on the web.

P.S. I hit that link a fair bit yesterday and it was working better for me than other areas. That read unread posts is great though for separating out the bits with more interest to me; many unexpected lessons.

Anything can change - I often use "print to PDF" when I stumble on important info on the Web -

Often its the crucial info on the web that is the first that gets deleted or lost in the cloud based world

but we are a popular site and the Web Archive has stored most of our past as a time machine

I'd be gutted if VGuitar forums disappeared.  But in that worst case scenario, it would go a long way just to set up a new forum with the same name and encourage everyone to register anew.  The long history of informative posts are invaluable, but the incredible people are what make it happen on a day to day basis.

That's where a backup is important,
not just with the Hosting provider, but also as a FTP site backup to a physical HDD, as a living copy as it is today,
so that in a years time when your site host suddenly folds and closes, your still have at least everything backed up and only lose up to a years posting instead of everything.
