FWIW -

I ordered one of these today to replace my 2 yr old iPhone 4 - so I can finally ditch iTunes, the "gatekeeper of lost IOS user work files" !

GALAXY Note II

Should have it here by Nov 9th

musicman65

Very cool. I like the Note II's size and pen/touch input. Let me know how you like it.

My friend got the Galaxy S3 the same day I got my iPhone5.  He's already having a bit of buyers remorse.  He had a low end android before but this thing is much more like a computer than he's used to and he's almost intimidated by it.  Frequently he'll go "this doesn't work" and hand it to me then I figure out whatever it is he was trying to do and show him how it works.  It's probably the nicest droid I have tried so that should work well for you Elantric.

Only problem getting away from iTunes for me - I have my last twelve years of compositional efforts stored in it in addition to my recreational listening.  All sorted and categorized - no way am I going to start over on that unless I have to.  250+ gigs and years of sticking discs into computers encoding all the obscure progressive rock I like.  I have the ultimate backup though: two Ikea bookcases crammed full of the original discs in the basement where my studio used to be.
My music projects online at http://www.aliensporebomb.com/

GK Devices:  Roland VG-99, Boss GP-10, Boss SY-1000.

That's why I've kept my music library stored as MP3's in Artist/Album folder format.  It works with iTunes and Android (probably more) making it more platform agnostic.

musicman65

Definitely avoiding proprietary formats and "locked in, can't change easily" designs here. I have 500TB of audio in MP3 format from years of ripping CD's. It would be a monumental task if it was all on iTunes...yikes!

Although many criticize the stylus as a throwback to the Palm Pilot days, once you use one awhile you will prefer it for detailed work. My Samsung Series 7 Slate is Touch + Wacom Digitizer. I upgraded to Win8 and although the "Metro" interface is finger friendly, I still prefer the stylus for anything more than casual use.

With my old late 1990'S Palm OS Handera/ TRg Pro - I was never more productive, moved to WinCE for a while (Compaq iPaq, Toshiba E800), Then I had a Sony  / Ericson Symbian Phone I really liked. pre IPhone.
Frankly I'll never go back to Microsoft for a Mobile device Ever.

The Galaxy Note 2 will be refreshing as I'm an Electronics Design Engineer and always drawing diagrams.
I WANT A STYLUS!!
There are a wealth of Android Electronics apps too, looking forward to using a USB OTG adapter and a Gabotronix Xprotolab Oscope
http://www.gabotronics.com/development-boards/xmega-xprotolab.htm

And connecting it via USB to the Galaxy Note 2 using a recent Android scope app.

I do intend to keep all my IOS mobile devices. (iPad 2 64GB, iPod Touch 2.0, iPhone 3G, iPhone 4 ) - as these serve as very good mobile MIDI controllers.and 100's of other uses besides being a Phone.

My first Android was the $125 Archos 80 G9 - which i discovered was 90% as effective as my $865 iPad2 .

That O'scope app looks handy. I could have used that app this week while troubleshoot a crappy RS485 circuit! So what kind of wired MIDI options are we gonna have?

With the Galaxy Note 2, Using the USB OTG adapter, it's basically a similar paradigm as an iPad + Camera Connection Kit.
Many of those generic USB to MIDI adapters work. or are in development (Im beta testing several) including low latency USB Audio using Class Compliant interfaces ( Korg PX5D, Fender G-DEC3, Alesis I/O2, etc)

Until then here's a good overview video series by Samsung Mobile.

500 TB in MP3?  That is a LOT of audio...Even if this was NOT compressed, and was AIFF or WAV format at 16/44.1 you would have audio files which take up  10MB/Min audio.

This would mean that 100MB = 10min.  1GB=100min.  1TB=100,000min. 5TB = 500,000min.  500TB = 50,000,000min.  50,000,000/60min = 833,000 hours of audio. This is 34,722 days of audio.  This seems to come out to  95.129 YEARS of audio.

And that is if everything is not compressed.  MP3 is normally 192-320mbps.....so you have several hundred years of audio?   That's an ambitious listening project!

Is my math off somewhere here?

musicman65

No. You are correct. My bad...GB not TB!. I have 6 USB drives that are avg 250 GB each. I have 500GB in mp3. I have a brother in law in California that is an eclectic music collector. We swap hard drives periodically. Beats downloading!

I figure I have a years worth of non stop music.

The funny thing is it's all one album, the biggest concept album ever made!?!?!

Lol....yeah. I'm putting it up on iTunes too! 0.99 download. Your carrier is endorsing my album.

Of course, you are responsible for data charges.

Here is what I have found.

* Just like the Apple world, prior app purchases on the Google Play Store can be installed for free on the Note2 without need to repurchase.

Ive installed these apps on the stock ATT Note2 - No Rooting, No Custom ROMs - Stock AT&T Note 2 right out of the box:

Check out LiveBPM on the Play Store. Its a Beats Per Minute moving graph and great for focusing on band tempo in practice.

QuoteWorks great to lift the veil and know where all your files are.

I think the Note 2 would be a little too big for me, but "lifting the veil" is just about enough to sell me on Android.

Two built-in mics?  And they actually sound OK?

I have just brought a Samsung galaxy mini 2, it's really cool, i like the speach2text and google speach search functions.

Didn't like the free aquarium screen saver download sending regular spam to my phone though.
