I read that mag pu's can deteriorate over time. I didn't know that - do they loose magnetism? any idea how this affects VG patches? Thanks.

Yes - Mag PU's "degauss" over time , when I worked at Valley Arts, we had a bulk Magnetizer, and a few session players would have me disassemble and remagnetize the PU's in their #1 axe.
I did this for Larry Carlton's #1 1968 ES-335 a few times, as well as for other sessions players  between 1980-1986

But Before / After PU re-magnetization results in a very subtle difference, that may not be heard on the GK-2a / GK-3 hex PU
And from a GK Processor perspective, simply raising the GK-PU sensitivity on the  GK Processor would probably yield similar results
