I'd use a Schottky diode suitable to max current.
But I got more gear than I need...and I like it!

I prefer bridge rectifier for DC input, no matter what odd power supply polarity plug used, the project still works.
The bridge also offers a small degree of ground isolation if ground loops become a potential problem in chained devices from the same supply.
You don't lose much 'power' through series diodes, only a voltage drop.

I have seen some nasty designs in old OD pedals I have repaired which have used a shunt diode for reverse polarity protection.
Usually results in a shorted diode and a new power supply plug pack required.
