The "U" laptop processors are designed for low comsuption but are bad performers.
i would suggest a second hand Asus A55V you can find an i7 3610q for 250 or 300€ and it is a strong performer I can assure that because i have one myself and you can run with it pretty much anything, Omnisphere, Diva, whatever, and at very low latencies.

I looked at SSD drive for laptop, and when it's included (either a 256 or 512Gb), there is no "regular" hard drive, and that bugs me since I find that with "only" 256Gb, I won't have enough room for the OS (Win 10), and all the gamut of synth softwares I plan to install on it.

Would an external (portable) hard drive do the job then?
An external usb3 hard drive would be very good.
If you gol for the Asus I suggested you can replace the dvd drive for a internal drive so you dont need to carry it separately.

A few questions about the laptop, and some compromises to make. What's the best to choose?

1) Touch screen or not? (What's best during a gig?)   http://dell.to/2hA6HHj
- 16Gb RAM - i7-7500 +512Gb SSD with less options or 16Gb RAM - i7-7500+2TB HD with more options?
(Touch screen 13-inch Vs. Non-touch 17-inch)

2) Asus Vs. HP (both touch screen)   http://bit.ly/2hAcahk
- Intel i5 6200  Vs. i5 7200  (does that really make a difference?)
- 12Gb RAM/1Tb (both)

3) HP i7-6700HQ  Vs. Dell Inspiron i7-7500U    http://bit.ly/2hAaPaq
- Non-touch screen: 15.6 Vs. 17 inch
- 2Tb HD +128Gb SSD  Vs. 2Tb

PS: Please let me know if I'm not in the right forum to ask about this.

I've posted some information about using touch screens with a pc you might find relevant since I went through a very similar journey to yours. My blog needs a bit of updating as I've made unreported progress but you might be interested in post #106 if not the whole thread.

I also created this which might help out as well. Note: the monitor is not a laptop; I misspoke in the video.

Thanks Vade! I'll read all this carefully.

One more point: I considered the "cheaper" Acer vs. Asus, Lenovo or Dell laptops, and the Acer had more bad reviews than any of the other. In order, it seems that Asus is at the top, then Dell...

What a smoking player.  Talk about effortless!  This guy could make anything sound good.

Yeah, man. I love that little chord wiggle at 4:15.

That guy is cool  ;D
Yope! I know now why I bought a Godin with Fishman TriplePlay!
And no regret since I got it... March 2017.

And it made me fall in love with guitar playing again, like I did in the 70s with classical guitar, and now with guitar synth... cool!

PS: Thanks Elantric for posting that video!

Yeah he's cool, however a properly setup GR-55 is not far off regarding tracking (except on the low notes), and the things you can get right of the GR-55 without walls of studio equipment is awesome. I have them both (FTP & GR-55). Still, IHO the GR-55 is a better one-box synth filler on stage paired with old school analog guitar sound.
But I got more gear than I need...and I like it!

After protracted struggles with my GR-55 (and an GR-33 from eBay) I've been forced to conclude that I'm just not a clean enough player to use any of these gadgets.  Those with incredibly clean styles and even pick attack (like the guy in the synth shootout) give me something to aspire to, but it's going to be a long hill to climb.  Always good to have something to shoot for, but in my case must be tempered with a healthy dose of realism :-).
