Title: GT-8- New to the forum! Some specific questions.
Post by: sjturbo on January 12, 2018, 12:46:32 PM
Hello I'm new to the forum. Been looking for a forum that is Roland/ Boss GT specific. Great to finally find one. One of my favorite guitarist's ( George Marinelli, guitarist for The Range and Bonnie Raitt used/uses a GT8! My other favorite guitarist's tone, Larry Carlton is from a dumble. I have heard that most of the available patches are more in line with higher gain but hoping that someone may have some ideas. Can I get the same sounds from the newer GT100 as the GT8? And very importantly can the GT8 or GT100 achieve the same sounds as in the clip I have included. I believe there are three distinct d sounds in the clip so please if you have time listen to them all. The one I search for is at about 3:11. Hope to get some ideas as to whether the GT8 or GT100 can cop these models. BTW I use a EPI LPDC/P90's, LP/Humbuckers, Echotone Semi hollow/ 59'/Seth Lover. Main amp is Music Man RD50/EV speaker.

********** USEFUL INFORMATION *************

********* FIRST USE CONNECTION HINTS **************

a.) Connect the GT-8 via a Midi Device adapter and two midi cables,
ensure Midi device Midi-Out goes to GT-8 Midi-In, and the Device Midi-In goes to GT-8 Midi-Out.

b.) In most cases the program should select Midi device and connect automaticaly if already setup, if not, then follow the next two steps.
Start the FxFloorBoard program, for the Menu select Preferences/Midi and select the GT-8 midi device for midi input and output.

c.) Select the editor program "Connect" button, it should stay "on" if all connections are correct.

d.) Open the Patch-Tree side panel by clicking your mouse pointer on the 'yellow arrow',
the Patch-Tree has items which will expand when you click on the
  • symbols.
When the tree items expand, you will see the patch names appear as the editor requests this information from the GT-8.

e.) A single mouse pointer click on the Patch-Tree name will change the GT-8 patch to that selected patch only
    - sound played through the GT-8 will have the sound of that patch.

f.) A double click on the patch name will load the patch information from the GT-8 into the editor,
all the patch settings will update the editor GUI when loaded in.

g.) Turning any knob will change the sound of the effect being adjusted,
when the desired sound is achieved, you can either save the patch to the GT-8 or save the patch to file on disk.

h.) To save the patch to the GT-8, select a location with a 'single-click' on the Patch-Tree,
the chosen patch number will be displayed in the editor patch number window, then press the "write/sync" button.

****************** If there is a problem 'connecting' ensure the GT-8 UNIT ID is set to "1" (factory default)
    * and the midi channel is set to "1".*************************************************************************

    FxFloorBoard PROJECT:
    NOTE:
<<if something is in-correct, then the issue has not been brought to my attention.>>

files can be saved/loaded as syx or mid (SMF) or gte (Librarian) formats.
the GT-8FxFloorBoard will also open GT-10 *.gxg & *.mid files, and translate GT-Pro patch files (*.syx single patch type).

layout increased, which may be a problem for low screen resolutions. (i use 1280 X 800 minimum)

This project is a continuing session of evolution.........

patch tree to the left side should give patch change on single click and (when 'connected' button active),
double click should request patch transfer.
opening each bank node should request patch names (while 'connected').

patch rename by doubleclicking name display panel.

Welcome to the forum. There is definitely a plethora of info and resources here for the GT's. Boss GT central used to be the ultimate GT forum but it now is RIP. a lot of those members migrated here or were already bouncing around here also. The sounds your looking for could definitely be accomplished with the GT's. They seem pretty strait forward with some mild effects. I have not used a GT8, but I did use the GT10 for a few years. I think the GT100 is better in almost every aspect. I wouldn't say leaps and bounds but the 2 major  differences for me was the newer user interface is much easier to understand and work with, and I think the GT100 presets had a warmer sound to it right out of the box. Not to say you couldn't get it out of previous versions but it took more work. NOW, all that being said, the tones your looking for in the video should be achievable from your musicman amp and a delay pedal, and maybe a warmer OD pedal. If you go the GT route, you will have a boatload of effects and control options to use with your amp but use the GT "manual mode" with your amp. The one thing with the GT's is they are better to use with an amp that has an effects loop OR, use a powered monitor,(2) if you want stereo. It will sound much better. MFX pedals with amp modeling don't tend to play well with a "regular" guitar amp because of the amps voicing. If your looking mainly for the sounds in the video, the GT's would likely be overkill and more expensive than say maybe a simpler ME25 or a Boss GT1. Of course there are numerous other smaller effects pedals out there also. Let the research and GAS begin ;)

Pardon my ignorance, even though I have had a GT-6 for about 4 years, I never really did much with it. Now I want to use it and even know how to program it. With the statement above, are you saying that if you are going to use a guitar amp then put it in manual mode and run it through the effects loop and then it would sound better? I understand about the two not really playing well together, trust me, I do understand that. Probably why I never really did much with it, unless it was for use with headphones.

I know I should ask this in the GT-6 forum but I can't imagine the answer would be any different there. Where can I find more info about the settings other than the manual? It really lacks IMO. Some thing are straight forward and some are just flat out confusing, like the eq section and sub eq.

I've been playing around with the Floorboard software and thank you Gumtown, awesome stuff.
