Title: VG-99 - USB Audio Mode (Standard or Advanced)
Post by: sixeight on August 02, 2011, 08:15:24 AM
You you switch the VG99 to standard driver mode, you can play audio from an ipad on the VG99. unfortunately no MIDI, only audio. But it could be handy for playback of mp3s or backing tracks from the ipad. You can connect the ipad via the camera connection kit and the USB cable.

Here is the best application. Play virtual guitar amps on the ipad without an Irig. Unfortunately the Guitar Rig amps do not work through USB hardware...

Someone here claims that if you disable the VG-99 "Advanced Mode" USB Audio, then VG-99 can connect  to iPad using an Apple USB Camera Adapter. This needs more exploration. (//http://)

It works. But I am not sure what the sample rate and bit resolution are. I get a lot of digital noise in JamUp. Also the guitar sounds very compressed. Maybe my level out of the vg99 is too low, though it seems fine in Bias. I am not sure if I can check my input level in JamUp.

With the standard driver there is no Midi and that's a real shame. I will check out wireless Midi options, but both my Macbook and my ipad 2 do no support the new midi-over-bluetooth app.

VG-99 does work as USB Class compliant Audio when you do not use the "Advanced" USB mode  - bit depth is limited to 16 bits - hence the noise in amp sims (Jamup / BIAS FX) , but adequate for Mobius Looper or IOS recording

QuoteAnd this is odd because I could have sworn that prior to Sierra I had a 24-bit option for the VG-99 but last time I checked it was locked at 16 on my iMac.  I'm checking into this once I get home (facepalm).

As I recall,  you posted success of VG-99 with MacOS Sierra - but did not update to VG-99 USB Driver, which is a very unique situation (all others I know cant do that)

Successful VG-99 USB audio on MacOS Sierra with older VG-99 Core audio driver for older version of OSX might be explained if your VG-99's USB  settings.

VG-99 "USB Standard Mode"  = USB Class Compliant mode - and will work with Mac, IOS, Android, Linux -  as a USB Class Compliant Audio interface, but its restricted to 16 bits.

If you want 24 bit audio over USB, must change your VG-99 USB Settings to "Advanced Mode" , and use the proper Roland VG-99 USB Audio driver for your operating system

GT-10 - How to use GT-10 as Class Compliant USB Audio interface for iPad

Same technique works with Roland VG-99, VB-99 - set USB Mode to "Standard Mode:

But the Audio over USB is 16 bit ( similar to Zoom G3)

A step-by-step guide on how to use a Boss GT-10 as an input device for you iPad, using the USB. Instead of using the dated pre-amps on the GT-10 you can use an app like BIAS or JamUp to get good preamps tones, and you can add effects from the GT-10. You can also use the GT-10 to record using an iPad DAW such as Garageband.

QuoteThat being said the fact that the VG-99 is 16-bit USB audio out and the GP-10 24-bit is a revelation too.

Actually the VG-99 Is 24 bit when USB audio is set to Advanced Mode ( this is what you use for ASIO (windows), Core Audio(Mac)

It's only 16 bit in Standard Mode (iPad)

which might be explained due to your VG-99's USB  settings.

Last time I checked I could have sworn I was running the 99 driver since I did update it at some point - I'll definitely doublecheck this tonight and install if it isn't there.

Update:  everything I have from Boss/Roland VG-99, RC-300 and GP-10 are all 24-bit now that I check MacOS Audio MIDI Setup.  I must have been looking at my other bootable partition that I don't really use for audio purposes much.

One way to test what mode your VG-99 is in, if you can connect to the Roland VG-99 Editor with just a USB cable and edit VG-99 settings, - you are running in USB Advanced 24 bit Audio Mode, as that mode supports MIDI over USB.

If you can not connect with Roland VG-99 Editor with just a USB cable - you might be running VG-99 USB in Standard 16 bit Audio Mode, and that does NOT support MIDI over USB  - required for connecting  / editing VG-99 with the  Roland VG-99 Editor, or be running a "stale" VG-99 USB Audio Driver for your operating system.
