I don't really understand why boss used input as one or more of the osc.
The through/return works the same,  so why not having all three osc for waveforms?

I play Country music too, I'm just not sure which country it's from...

You can apply amp and filter to the OSCs and they can be controlled by the env, LFOs, waves, and MIDI. I like that. You get filter/wah and tremolo fx without using any of the fx blocks. It's a shame the sequencer only works with pitch, if it was selectable pitch/amp/filter it would be nicer.

Clearly Boss envisioned the Return input for a parallel fx loop. In my case, I use it for the regular guitar when using sound twisting fx like the Mel9 and I split the signal into two paths.

Why didn't they include the Oscs for the Return? Heck, if we are going to ask that, I'd rather ask why they didn't spend more time/money on cleaner polyphony. That is the biggest point that tightens MY shorts!

I never understood the concept of FX return in mono.
To me that's more or less useless.
