I have a Apple 12.9" iPad Pro (Mid 2017) connected via a lightning adapter to a Roland UM-One and the midi connectors to a Line 6 Helix. It works fine if I connect the lighting adaptor directly to the iPad Pro but if I put a 6' lightning extension it wont see the UM-One, but if I connect my iPhone 7S it works fine.  On another pedalboard that I have with a GR-55 and it does the same thing, I need that extension so it can reach to the iPad on the mic stand. Is there a workaround or setting that I'm missing?

ps: i have the power connected also to lightning adapter

Majority of Apple Lighting extension cables will never work for that situation  - and particularly if you upgrade to IOS 12  - as APPLE now checks and will refuse to connect to most third party  Lightning Extension cables without official "Apple "mFI" approved"  label - so cables that worked in 2017 are non functional today with after IOS 11.4 ( now IOS 12  (soon to be IOS 13 later this year)

Yes there is an "Apple Authentication IC" inside the small Lighting plug on all mFI approved cables

I typically read RECENT reviews from actual Lighting Extension cable from users who use IOS 12 for this specific application - also seek an Apple approved "mFI"  Lightning Extension cable( good luck)

I bought this to use to extend a lighting port on a Focusrite iTrack to connect to a newly upgraded 12.9" iPad Pro (which won't fit into the space provided) .. works beautifully (and has enhanced the recording experience overall!) I can't speak to using it on other devices.

Got the CableJive cable and also does't work, it charges the iPad but the RolandUM One its not recognized. So I did what I didn't wanted to do, One 6' lighting cable for power and a USB extender cable connected to the Roland UM One and both connected to the lighting adapter and then to the iPad and it works. So now I got two cables going to the mic stand but the important thing is that it works.

If you are on IOS 12, you may not find any lightning  extension cable which works

Apple intentionally crippled many formerly working cables and devices which used to work fine prior to IOS 11.4

Explains why Im content to stay on IOS 10 - Music tools I still need and use still work on older IOS versions

But it means recent apps that mandate  IOS 12 ( Like Jam Origin MIDI Guitar) Ill never use the current version

Basically if you dont see the device you intend to use sold at Apple Store , then expect big compatibility problems

Of course within 6 to 12 months all new  ipads and iphones will drop Lightning and have USB- C  leaving piles of orphaned third party hardware- same as occurred when they dropped the 30 pin connector in 2012

QuoteApple is said to be doubling the length of Live Photos to 6 seconds, and testing versions of 2019 iPhones that use USB-C instead of Lightning.
