FaceBook page for the Ampero has a brief message regarding a new firmware update that allows re-ordering of effects. Exactly what that means is TBD, I guess, but if they get this right it will be a huge step forward for this unit. Time will tell...keeping an eye on this...

the ampero has two different outputs, but you can´t assign one output with cabsim on and the other without. really a bummer. (a great plus of the mooer ge 200)
i´ve emailed hotone, if this feature may be will included in upcoming firmwares, but didn´t get an answer until now.

Well, i lean towards the Hotone however i realize it's my new toy and it's always fun to play with new toys. The fixed effect chain remains a huge disadvantage but they promised new firmware to deal with that. I love other features like the touchscreen and the quality of the effects and sims. I need a couple of days to tell you for sure which one is my favorite. ;)

And yes this is patch P32-1 right out of the box in it's original state.
Might need a little tweaking but i find it usable as is.

This one was played on the exact same solid body electric guitar as the brown sound clip.
For me it's certainly confincing enough for an occasional acoustic sound in a live set without having to change guitars.

Mine arrived yesterday and I am deeply impressed! Best MFX I've had so far. I plugged it in the return of my amp and found out that the cab sims, which "shoudn't" be used in this setup, sounded great! On the negative side: this thing is small. And you have to watch out not to hit the controls when you use the foot switches. Also the user interface is nice but you really have to use the pc editor, no problem for me though.

A lot of preset sounds are very good out of the box, thats really unusual.
Great tool! Recommended!

You can avoid the prob with tapping two switches together. Setup for FS1 HOLD: Bank- and FS2 HOLD: Bank+ ! So the navigation becomes easy.

Have been dailing/playing the unit for several days now and I am soundwise (High Gain) not convinced. There is some shrlilness I can not dial out. Of course thats my personal experience and opinion. Secondly the responsivess on the pick attack is there but not enough for me. And thirdly the sounds are missing some layering or depth. The unit has many many nice specifications what for me the reason was to order it november last year. Will test some more over the weekend but as it looks now the unit will be returned next week.

Edit: From the start I had to back the input volume to -15 dB to have a less throwing up signal (and yes input switch on gtr). OK my pickups are hot but this is just ridiculous. I mean BK Nailbomb in my Ibanez Prestiges are not that hot.

Furthermore have tested 3 different Ibanez Prestiges, 3 different guitar cables and 3 different headphones and the sound is cold, lifeless and to scratchy.

Reading all the other first responders here my unit must be faulty. But faulty or not it is going back and the honeymoon is over.

My PC is Windows 10 HOME 64 bit

Once Editor and ASIO are installed, even if uninstalling and reinstalling again will cause a driver error and the Editor will not recognize it.

An error message appears at ASIO startup.

As a current solution, I was restoring the computer to the state before installing both. (I do not know if this is the correct solution)

I'm having a blast with the Ampero. my main attraction is the mutli- use design - it hits most of my wish list in a small tote-able Guitar workstation interface.

Some discoveries and verification of USB Class Compliant AUDIO -

I used ATH-M40 Headphones connected to the Ampero's Heaphone Out jack  - the Ampero's Heaphone output has good characteristics and easily drives these 32 ohm headphones much Louder than HX Stomp!


I connected my iPad Pro +Apple USB Camera Adapter via USB to Ampero - and then launched a B3 Organ app on iPad and was greeted with great stereo Organ sound on Ampero's Headphone Output   - confirming Ampero works as a USB Class Compliant DAC


Tested with Auria DAW and that also works with Ampero
Auria reports the Ampero as 2 in / 2 out  24 bit @ 44.1kHz USB Audio interface 


next I connected my iPad Pro +Apple USB Camera Adapter via USB to Ampero and  used MIDI Monitor app and made a screen grab of the MIDI SYSEX that Ampero transmits upon each foot switch press and rotary encoder turned  - I see AMPERO TRANSMITS SYSEX for each of those control over USB.


Had a lot of fun jamming with the Amperos excellent sounding drums - (right there with beat buddy quality)    many patterns are supplied   - great for basic songwriting. just Ampero and an iPad  - this should make a great interface for Jam Origin MIDI GUITAR (IOS)

AMPERO is a keeper for me - and has 90% of my essential features  (

Wish List- - Ability toplace Reverb 1st in signal Chain - as I play in a vintage Surf Instrumental band "The Dentures" ( Ventures tribute band) and need the "Dick Dale signal chain with Reverb 1st  - to get the vintage reverb "drip tone when palm muting
and I wish there was a dry stereo recording Line level input for USB recording from the Ampero's 3.5mm TRS Aux IN   

Yes with FW V1.0  the Ampero FX are slow to react to the onboard Expression Pedal treadle   - response is "laggy" but clean zipper free audio is the result during transitions 
Edit since improved  - no lag with recent firmware

People ask - "How is the Amp Modeling on Ampero" - I place it comparable if not better than Headrush - the Speaker Cab IR sim really shows here - and Ampero is a big step above Boss GT-1,

Id say Ampero is in same league as Atomic AmpliFire 3 IMHO.

It breaths like analog -

some folks complain about the hiss on ultra gain patches - but its no worse than the genuine tube rig its emulating - and there is a controllable "smart noise gate" - but the background noise does not bother me _ I can mute the Ampero with the Expression pedal between songs - but others might complain.


with Firmware V1.0 the Ampero expression pedal lag is significant  - but much better after the B6.4 firmware update

Hotone will be providing updates - often the last Friday of Each Month  - like they have been doing with XTOMP

with Firmware V1.0 the Ampero expression pedal lag is significant  -  - BUT after update to new FW B6.4 ( as of Feb 22, 2019 - Now FW 2.1 March 2019 )  - many things have improved- faster expression pedal response and faster patch to path change time  - (now only 35 milliseconds on FW B6.4)  and with FW 2.1 much faster tuner

Yes  - run an external MFX  in parallel with Ampero

think of the Ampero's 3.5mm TRS AUX INPUT as a Stereo mix bus input, where you feed the stereo outputs from an external effect
 
You could use a SY-300 -

Guitar > SY-300 GUITAR INPUT >SY-300 THRU OUTput > AMPERO GUITAR INPUT 

then route SY-300 3.5mm TRS Headphone out > 3.5mm TRS AUX Input on Ampero

Ampero XLR Out to PA

It's fascinating how quickly things have evolved: the Hotone Ampero is a compact pedal board that offers less than 400 euros of touch screen, the ability to load responses to impulses, numerous emulations of amps and screens, and even a certain possibility of using MIDI. The sophistication of technologies is something that has not only affected consumer products: it is clear that the world of guitars has also been modified by it.

In Guitarists we have been able to test the Hotone Ampero at length, concentrating above all on the sound factor, since, although they may be attractive, technological innovations do not stop being something that should help us reach an end, and that end is sound . Fortunately, Hotone have wanted to offer a competent sound, with nuances and that will awaken the interest of those who seek strategic combinations of quality / price. It would have been easy for them to offer quality "entry level" sounds in an attractive touch-screen envelope and lights, but as we said, it has not been like this: there has been a real will to develop a tool that musicians with some experience can enjoy.

Building
The Hotone Ampero is made of metal and has a pleasantly modern finish. Both the footswitches and the expression pedal seem resistant, and although only the test of time will tell the truth, nothing has made us suspect problems in the unit that has reached us. Even the three central potentiometers have a solidity and confidence in the turn that has made a good impression on us. Also the connection panel presents a feeling of confidence when connecting and disconnecting cables. We do not know exactly the resistance of the touch screens like the one that includes the Ampero, but it is at a level slightly lower than the frame in which it is contained, which can save a blow of objects that do not fall directly on top of it.

Driving
The operation is easy from the start, thanks to the touch screen that offers extremely intuitive information . The manual did not have to be consulted at any time to achieve the majority of operations that we ask of this type of multi-effects. As we commented in the video, our only downside to the screen is how small some buttons can be at times, especially when choosing between long lists of effects. Perhaps a new organization in the menus, with larger selection areas, could be included in an upcoming firmware.

By removing that small detail, the touch screen responds agilely and makes operations quick and easy. Definitely, it is a very natural navigation mode that will not surprise us if it ends up becoming a standard in the near future.

Configuration possibilities
The options to personalize the Hotone Ampero are excellent: there is a certain margin we can decide what each footswatch should do, and even define more than one behavior (that is, something happens when we press it and something else when we keep it tight, or when we press combinations of more than one button). Also at the departures level there are menus to decide which signals will be processed and which ones will be dry, although not independently for jack and XLR outputs , from which we can only decide their level: line or instrument). That would have allowed us to have signals without screen emulation by the jack outputs and with it by the XLR outputs, although it is a lesser evil.

Of course, the main criticism of Hotone Ampero is its current impossibility of altering the order of the chain of effect. However, it is not as bad as it may seem, since most of the conventional sounds we may need can be reasonably obtained with such a chain of effects. That does not mean that we do not join the popular request that the next firmware includes such freedom, it is clear, but we do believe that it can be an overrated disadvantage in this particular case. Unless, of course, we are going to use Hotone Ampero as our number one tool in production or recording contexts in which we need a high level of adjustment.

The absence of an effects loop also makes it impossible to integrate external effects as part of the internal chain, as well as the method of the four cables with our ampli. Sure it will be a small inconvenience for many, but in our opinion, the Hotone has been much more designed to work on its own with its own internal system. Except for the Midi connection, its design gives clues of having been designed more to be an autonomous and portable solution, than to be part of a more complex chain.

Sound
The amplifier models sound good , and deliver a satisfactory response in which we have not had to make big fuss or modify our playing to adapt to the response of the emulator. It is true that not all models are equally balanced at the level of frequencies, since when doing a scroll through the different amplifiers we clearly observe that some sin of a certain thinness, but they are not the majority, nor is it something difficult to fix with a pair of equalizer settings. Something that has surprised us pleasantly is the way that the Hotone Ampero has to respond to the attacks and small variations that we make with the prong , which in other similarly priced multi-effects sometimes tend to get muddy and barely noticeable. In general, we have enjoyed playing with the emulations, which is always a good job when designing them.

Screen emulations are also interesting, and most of them bring us closer to some kind of sound we might need at some point. Not only is a good number of them included (about 70, although part of them are emulations of acoustic guitar responses), but we can expand them including our responses to impulses , which we can load up to 10. In all of them we can activate or deactivate up to 10 microphone types and modify their positioning in three coordinates.

The effects of delay are good and, especially in stereo, create spatial sensations in which it is easy to get lost. The reverbs, also competent, have been included in many factory presets with enough success, which makes the first impressions with these presets are quite rewarding. Something more humble is the section of modulations such as chorus, phasers and flangers, which although they fulfill their function and can moderately adorn some sounds to bring us closer to our sound goals, they are not as inspiring as the delays nor invite so much to be activated frequently. . In this section, the worst effect is pitch shifting and its derivatives (also the shimmer reverb), since the tracking is not very successful, and its sound is full of artifacts that may not attract many. However the wah sounds are quite effective, and the sound aid tools such as noise gate, equalization and compressions work correctly when we dedicate the right time to their exact adjustment.

Additional features
The looper and the drum rhythms are very interesting inclusions to create a complete package that allows us to practice and enjoy more of the instrument: they have good features and both work as expected from them. There are different drum rhythms among which we can choose, and although we are in looper mode, we can travel to the battery menu to change the rhythm that we like more or change preset to go creating layers of loops with different sounds. However, the batteries are not quantized to the loop, and we have not found it especially easy to catch the trick to the footswitches to launch our loops on time with the battery to prevent them from moving out of synch with it. Recording is not activated when stepping or releasing, but when a combination of both is made in a certain time. Maybe a small firmware modification can make the recording activate as soon as the footswitch is pressed, and that it does not need to be released later, it can help the musician not require so much precision to record their loops.

Second, but not least, we must also highlight the presence of the Midi In connection. Although it may be a feature not used by the majority, we must not lose sight of the fact that it will allow us to control Hotone Ampero programs from another device (for example, the Midi Cybery controller from Hotone), so we can integrate it into a pedalboard with a master controller and coordinate your responses to the rest of our pedals. However, Midi Out has not been included, so Hotone Ampero itself will not serve as a driver for other devices. But that small counter is not the focus of this inclusion, rather it is the one that has opted to incorporate at least one communication port like that.

As for the USB connection, it allows us a comfortable operation of the unit through the editor (of appearance and use much more pleasant than, for example, that of Mooer) and also for the firmware update and the recording. The Hotone Ampero offers 2 input channels and two output channels, so we do not have the versatility.

The Hotone Ampero offers, for less than 400 euros , a pedalboard with good sounds of ampli and speaker, touch screen, enough effects to complete the sound carpet competently, and a huge flexibility of adjustment thanks to the possibility of customizing your footswitches and output system. Undoubtedly, Hotone has tried to take a little further the limit of what it is possible to obtain paying less than 500 euros, since the sounds are really competent to be in the price range in which we are. In fact, there are some emulations that sound surprisingly realistic, even close to some of the larger products.

However, there are also some elements that must be taken into account: due to the absence of an effects loop, it is a fairly closed system, which seems to work better when we use it on its own . For that reason precisely, we also point out that it is suitable for those who use the classic sounds of the history of the guitar, but not so much for those who like to experiment and squeeze the possibilities of the effects, since the order of the chain of effects it is closed (for now) and some areas of exotic effects are not very successful. As for competitors, for about 115 euros more we find the HX Stomp Line 6, which has no touch screen, or XLR outputs, or allows so many simultaneous effects, but has Midi In / Out, stereo effects loop, USB 8 In / out and, although on the issue of amp emulations its superiority could be the subject of debate for some, in effect yes we have no doubt that it would surpass the Hotone Ampero.

Therefore, we recommend Hotone Ampero to those who seek to get "important sounds" and easily and without consulting manuals . It serves for home, live and domestic recordings thanks to its huge palette of amps to choose from, so if you only use effects primarily as an ornament, you will find most of the sounds you need. The simplicity of operation is extreme thanks to the touch screen , so we also indicate it as highly recommended for those who do not want to waste time with infinite adjustments and want to get to the sounds quickly. In addition, we like its price content and the large number of extras offered, such as the Midi, the Looper or its capacity as a USB interface.

The ability to use your own impulse responses is key for a lot of studio musicians. This allows you to download the official Celestion Speaker IR's for example and load them into the unit.  This brings the authentic speaker sound to your recordings.

The Touch Screen
The touch screen works well and this is the first unit of its kind I have seen one on. It is good to see a company innovating in space that is usually hindered by people building a lot of the same things.

The touch screen makes getting through certain menus easier but I also feel like it makes it more complicated for some tasks.  If you have big fingers like me, you might find the touch screen a bit tough to navigate when you're trying to be very precise.  The good news is if you choose to you can use the large scroll wheel instead of the touch screen.  This option is fantastic and between the wheel and the touch screen, you should be good to go.



Build Quality
I mention in my video review (above) that I really think the build quality is one of the stand-out features.  The pedal isn't made of plastic, it's made of metal.  The expression pedal feels very secure and it also has skateboard grip tape on the top for added traction.  The buttons and dials all feel like they put a lot of effort in. None of the main connectors are plastic (except the midi) so the Ampero should stand the test of time quite well.

Hotone Ampero or Mooer GE-200?
The only real main difference between these two on the surface level is the Ampero has a touch screen and the GE-200 does not.  I was assured by Hotone that this is not a copy of the Mooer GE-200 and after using it I can tell you the software is very different.

Both units are great at what they do. I would put it to you like this – if the touch screen is important, then go for the Ampero. If the touch screen isn't important then go for the GE-200 or whatever you get the better deal on.  I don't really feel like one is better than the other for any other reason than the touch screen.  The software might be different, but the end result is great tones.

Good for the Live Musician?
This is where I can't convince you this is the best tool for a gig.  You could absolutely use it live direct to the PA system or straight into an amplifier.  The problem I have with all of these types of units is they are very hard to make changes to the patches on the fly. This means if you need a bit more top end or overdrive doing so means going through menus.  I feel like the menu system is a tad complicated on this unit too.  The touch functionality does help but I really would find this tough at a live show to customize my sound as I go.

For the home studio musician who wants to record the Hotone Ampero is kind of like a mini-Kemper in many ways.  Running it direct to the audio interface will give you some really great results.  You can set up a stereo delay and have it pan between the speakers for example.  There's a million different amps and effects to choose from so there should be something in there for everyone.  For me, there's maybe a little too much going on but I can see this being aimed at someone who wants to record albums.  The Hotone Ampero will work great for Electric Guitar, Acoustic Guitar, and also Bass.

In recent years, digital pedals have become increasingly widespread in very small sizes that promise great sounds, little bulk and, often, additional functions such as integrated loop stations and drum machines.

The Ampero is no exception, a new product from Hotone that looks great right from the packaging in which it is contained and that does not betray expectations.



Packaging and content:  the elegant packaging, a little Apple Style, is made up of a dark box containing the pedal board. Opening it you find a sheet that covers the pedal itself and that is a quick manual of basic instructions. Complete the kit with the 12v power supply.

Materials and touch and feel:  high quality construction, brushed aluminum is elegant, good plastic and metal knobs for switches and jack inputs. There is a USB socket that allows us to use the pedal board as a normal sound card.

Pedal board management :  the management is very simple, it can be controlled entirely from the touch screen, with almost no need to intervene on the physical controls. A series of blocks allow the activation of the individual effects, the amp, the cash simulation and so on.

We can assign the command we prefer to each knob or switch, which gives an excellent user experience and can be modeled around the needs of each of us.

Excellent idea of ​​the 3 switches + CTRL that allow to have three patches under the feet plus the modification to the patch with the CTRL key, practically all that is needed for our main sounds.

The outputs are many, even stereo XLRs, and, as mentioned, the USB allows us to connect it to our computer to manage the sounds with the editor, load the IRs and use it as a sound card.



The sound:  the presets did not give me great emotions, as I almost always do with digital systems, so I took an empty patch, I activated an AC30 with its relative 2 × 12 case and a reverb thread.
Total for creating the patch: 45 seconds.
The sound is convincing, the amps available are over 50 and finding the right one for your clean, crunch and lead won't be complicated.
Effects of good quality and in disproportionate quantities: we talk about a hundred choices, which can be activated on 3 separate blocks; if you want to experiment you should be at ease.
Note of merit for delay and reverberations that are of excellent quality, as well as the distortion pedals.

Conclusions: a complete, versatile pedal board that also works as a sound card. The software can only improve in the coming months, so I suggest you keep an eye on it!

Just got this recently and I really dig it. For me, the high gain amps are make or break for any unit. The first thing I did was make a high gain Djent patch and it RAWKS. Detailed, not muddy, BIG. Feel and response is like an actual amp which is great. The ability to use my own IR files is also darn handy. I have   not had to use my own though as the ones on board sound great. The best feature has got to be the color touch screen. I love that it also has a software editor (HEAD RUSH should take note) but I find the touch interface is so quick/intuitive, that I don't need the software editor. This pedal is putting the pricey mult fx pedals on notice IMHO. For half the price of HX starter unit that has the built in expression pedal, you get better tones, full color touch screen, and a smaller form factor. Sold!

As a hobby musician, I extensively retraced the history of the "Modeller" (including Korg, Vox, Zoom, Digitech, Line6, Boss, etc.).
Besides my AX8 (Fractal Audio - unfortunately not available at Thomann) which I use as the main device I am looking for an additional, slightly more manageable multi-modeller. For me, the authenticity of the amp simulation is in the foreground, because I plug in directly on the stage in the mixer.
The Hotone MP-100 Ampero corresponds externally to my ideas. Size and appearance are absolutely correct and the technical parameters and comments in the net could expect a lot (Helix LT - killer!).
So ordered, immediately delivered by Thomann (a thousand thanks at this point, you've never let me down ...), unpacked and started.
The presets with my Strat durchgezappt times - as almost always: nothing Dolles here, striking perhaps the relatively high noise (in spite of noise reduction) for sounds with higher gain! I do not know (comparatively of my boss GT-1). So get to the tweaking.
A JCM 800 set and spiced up with various settings and FX modules. Result: usable.
I was hoping for something more. Especially the simulations of the amps leave much to be desired and remain, especially in terms of dynamics clearly behind the only half as expensive GT-1 back. With the latter, I can retrieve from heavily defined to fully ripped volume poti on the guitars from defined clean to zero without "slush". With the Ampero I can not get this scope, no matter how I set the Ampgain.
The FX equipment is really lush at the Hotone, but also here Boss (with the modest offer of effects) sonically nose in my view clearly ahead.
Connections and usability of the Ampero are successful. Large soft-touch display with actually self-explanatory controls and labeling of the controller spare the manual, which is also necessary if the school English should be a little rusty. At least I could not find a German manual on the net.
I would have liked a bit more variability in the assignment of the footswitch. The ability to use only one for switching effects with 4 buttons is just as poor as the missing possibility to be able to change parameters of the FX group in addition to the ON / OFF with the CTRL button. Additional control boxes I want to expressly minimize me to minimize the equipment yes. Also, I have spotted no way to change the sequence in the effect chain, which sometimes makes sense. Again, the GT-1 has the much better concept.
Drum section and Looper are nice gifts, but not essential for me.
Conclusion: There is here in the middle price segment a visually appealing, handy part with some good sounds and many effects.
From my personal point of view, however, this is clearly topped in terms of sound and variability of the Boss GT-1, so I have made use of the (enjoyable) MoneyBack guarantee.

Limited time to work with it as yet. A head cold and work schedule left me with little to try but spin through the preset patches. GP-10 seems less buzz-happy, even with the instrument model noise gate and post-effect noise gates off. Noise gate adjustment a must. That's with the presets, we'll see when I start creating my own patches. Tried it on external battery source, didn't reduce the buzz noise drastically.

Interesting using the stomp switches to navigate. With the 'banks of three' patch scheme that it uses, feels like the banks are the patches, where the individual patches are three variations you would use in a given tune.

When changing banks, the unit stays at the same patch number. When changing to a new bank, I'd prefer it default to the first patch in that bank (for instance) - to be predictable at a gig. Different folks might think differently of course.

No chance yet to start trying external MIDI control, editing, or building my own patches.

Hoping to get by without the noise gate for lower-gain patches. Noise gates never feel great to me.

So far so good! I'm especially interested in the acoustic (incl. nylon string) modeling. Good enough to leave the GP-10 at home?

For those curious, they did tell me that they are not looking to implement a stomp mode on the Ampero. They recommended an external MIDI controller like the Cyberry - which I image would be a cool combo but not what I'm looking for.

However they did say: "We will definitely have larger version with more (foot switches). So please stay tuned."
That makes sense and I may be taking another look down the road. But for now I plan to use a Mooer Red Truck and put my Hotone Amp Binary in the loop as needed

Easy for idiots.
I love plugging into an effect and not thinking about updates, setting levels, or initial parameters. I was able to jump right in. The editor is very nice too. Updating the firmware was confusing, but it's a one-time hiccup.

Model citizen.
I mainly got it as a stopgap until the the FM3 comes out. The goal was to get a small amp emulator / direct recording i/o that can handle stereo signals at the end of my pedalboard. The lack of stereo ins was a bit of a tradeoff but it does output stereo if you use the built-in effects. I went in expecting Zoom-level amp sounds but was pleasantly surprised when I got near-Helix amp emulation. My issue with the Helix Stomp was hitting the processing ceiling really early—to be fair to Helix, their effects are higher quality and likely are using much more processing.

Effects junkies & ambient-heads will be whelmed.
The reverbs aren't the best (the spring sucks). You can't use more than 1 effect type (ie. only 1 delay and 1 reverb). I would have preferred to have used 2 reverbs, or 2 delays. But if you use your favorite pedals in front of the Ampero, then just use the amp and a little of the Ampero reverb at the end, it's an OK compromise.

May cause swelling.
The expression pedal is confounding in many ways—it's confusing how the modes work and the indicator light that tells you what mode you are in is blocked by the pedal. But worst is the default volume pedal behavior is to act like an output volume: ie. it changes the volume of all of your effects and guitar. I wanted it to work like a volume pedal in front of an amp which I was able to do by putting the EQ block first in the chain, and then assigning the Exp. 1 pedal to the volume of the EQ. This makes it act like a real volume pedal before your amp and effects so you can get rising gain, and reverb and delay trails that don't get turned down. If there is a better way to do this LMK.

Huge draw.
The PSU can output 18v / 1.5A but the pedal needs a max of 18v / 500mA. I've found the T-Rex Fuel Tank Goliath can power the Ampero fine on the 18v / 250mA output—so far. This is awesome as it fits on my pedalboard and I don't need another power cable. Wishful thinking. It only works sometimes.

Adjust to taste.
My wishlist is short—without making it a whole other category of product: allow FX blocks to be any kind of effect & add stereo input (ideally a stereo loop which could be inserted before or after the amp).

My feedback after using it for some weeks at home and in rehersal studio.
Tested before Zoom series G3, MS, HD500,
(Also variax 500, Gr55, Gp10 and Eventide H9)
Not Kemper, Helix, and Axe FX

-Very good electric amp simulations. "Not looking for better now". So good the feeling, to play with them.

-Really usable acoustic simulation, the first time I feel I could use a simulation "live".

-Usable expression pedal, tested for volume or Wha.
For live use, as it is a bit small , i would advise to add a more standard expression pedal (this I have not tested yet).

-Form factor and usability really exciting.
With Patch, embedded controls, and externel control options,  I have enough.

-Fx section is OK for basic needs.
But-how to say it, would like them more detailed or organic (depending on the FX),
and with some "woh! reverb" like a Particle Verb. I will add a H9 Eventide for that.

-So cool to take it in travel, simply with the Bose Soundlink Revolve Plus :-)

-Wish list : Midi sync for the looper, and enhanced FX section.

The Hotone Ampero comes in a black textured metal case with the very compact dimensions of 323 x 137 x 46 mm, so it is thus narrower than a 17 "laptop and should fit into any gig or messenger bag.

At the front, all connections are assembled. On the left side is a jack for connecting an optional additional expression pedal or footswitch, next to it is the input, which can be toggled between electric guitar, acoustic guitar or line-in with a toggle switch.

The stereo outputs are available in the form of two balanced XLR and two unbalanced jack sockets, whereby the mono output is possible using the left output. An aux input as well as a connection for headphones, each in mini-mini format, are also to be found here. And if ever ground loops occur, a groundlift switch will help. A USB socket offers the possibility to connect the Ampero with the computer, which we will discuss later, and also the connection via MIDI is possible thanks to the corresponding socket. Incidentally, the Ampero has an on / off switch, and on the far right is the supplied power supply connector, which feeds it with 18V and 500 mA - battery operation is not provided. I turn on the Ampero and after a boot time of just under six seconds he is ready for action. First, I connect it to the computer, download the editing software and update to the latest firmware (V3.1, as of August 2019). All of this is easy, with Mac and PC software available in both English and Chinese.

Effects and amp models

The equipment of sounds and amps is more than abundant - you can choose from over 100 effect models. Among them are nine pedals of the category "dynamics" (compressors and boosters), various filters, wah and ring modulators, 22 distortion models, 22 modulation effects, 7 equalizers, 3 different noise gates, 20 delays and 19 reverbs.

The selection of amps is also very generous with 63 models, and of course all the classics gather here, starting with Fender, via Vox, Marshall, Friedman, Mesa Boogie or Bogner. Among the Amptypen are also five bass models and even two acoustic preamps based on AER models, as the Ampero is also designed for the use of bass and acoustic guitars.

Cabinets

Another big block is the Cabinet or Pulse Response Module. The Ampero comes with 70 factory impulse responses, of which 60 are the classic guitar boxes, including all sorts of models from the 1x6 "box folding to various 4x12" and even bass cabinets.
Also, ten acoustic impulse responses for the use of various Western or nylon guitars, even mandolins and acoustic basses can be found here. However, the folds are not fixed in their sound, the speaker microphone and even the microphone position can virtually be moved to the dome. For this purpose, the user has 10 classic speaker microphones at hand. A test with various positions shows audible differences, but they are much more subtle than would be the case in a real situation. If you want to convince your Steelstring with a convolution, the pit microphone can be easily deactivated.

In addition to the 70 slots, the Ampero also has 10 free memory slots, which may be equipped with their own or third-party folding. The format proposed here is a wav. File with 44.1 kHz and 24 bits, but the modeller also converts 48 kHz. The "Import IR File" icon makes loading completely problem-free.

Basically, the Ampero can be operated manually or via editor. There are 99 fixed factory presets and a further 99 rewritable user presets, arranged in banks of three presets each.

In principle, up to nine effect modules (FX 1-3, Amp, Cab, Noise Gate, EQ, Delay and Reverb) can be used simultaneously in a preset and placed in any order. The center display shows a large and clear bank, preset number and preset name on the input display. Above the main block, a line displays the state of the expression pedal, the screen lock, and the global tempo. Above this is an icon for "CTRL / Exp" under which the functions of the expression pedal and the control key can be determined. The setting of the drum computer, global settings and editing are also made from here. Below the preset view you can see three "Quickaccess" parameters,

Manual programming is done via the touchscreen in combination with the Menu / Value wheel on the right. The parameters are set via the three smaller potentiometers below the display. All this is very intuitive: You select a preset, press the edit icon in the touchscreen and get into the module view with 10 large icons that appear either colored or black / white depending on the activation state. Here you select the module that you want to edit by pots or touching the screen and confirm the selection by pressing Edit again. General effect types are handled by the value knob and in the row below there are three parameters above each of the three knobs. If an effect has more than just three parameters, an arrow on the display scrolls you to the next one. Editing the signal chain is also possible manually and is done by double-pressing a module, which can now be set to any position via Value-Poti. By pressing the Save button, the preset is saved to any memory location and its name can also be determined individually.

Switching the presets is, of course, also via the footswitch 1-3 except for the value potentiometer, with simultaneous pressing of switches 1 and 2 to select the banks downwards and from 2 and 3 upwards. The CTRL footswitch allows you to add or remove a module of your choice like an external pedal. Here, for example, you could add a booster for a lead sound without having to give away an entire preset for it. Holding down the CTRL key in a tempo tap switch will take a long press. The built-in Expression Pedal is by default configured as a volume slider, but can also take on other functions. And even the assignment of the footswitch can be chosen completely freely. If you want to convert the pedal to a WahWah, you just need to add one of the five Wah models to an effect module, eg FX1, and in the Expression configuration the FX 1 block is defined as target, with Wah range as the value to edit. Now, the pedal works as a volume slider in its normal state and as a wah after pressing the toe position. The Wah sounds sound very convincing and despite the compact pedal size, the foot has plenty of control and grip.

Really luxurious, however, is the editing with the software. Here is an extremely clear and intuitive user interface that looks visually appealing. All settings can be set up very comfortably, presets can be selected directly and all global settings can be made. The connection as an audio interface to the computer is easy here.

A great feature is the description text for the respective effect modules, paired with a graphic of the pedal or the model template. Here the user learns about a precise description of which original model is hidden behind the respective amps, effect pedals, cabinets and so on.

The Ampero can also be used as an audio interface. When my DAW (Studio One) on Windows and the latest version, he was not immediately recognized as an interface, but created Asio4All remedy and I could easily via USB directly into the DAW record. On how the integration with other DAWs and the Mac behaves, I can not say anything, but according to experience reports, the Mac connection easily. In Ampero, the left and right channels can now be set separately as dry and wet signals, so that you can let in addition to the effect signal still a DI track.

Also a drum computer for practicing is on board. Here the user has the choice of 89 grooves and 10 metronome settings. These can be adjusted in volume and speed.

Looper

The looper is activated by pressing footswitch 3 and CTRL. The four footswitches now take over the functions 1/2 Speed, Reverse, Record / Play and Stop / Delete. In total, 100 seconds are available in mono and 50 seconds in stereo mode. The drum machine also runs on the looper, but is not included.

The tuner is activated by pressing the foot switch 3 for a longer time. An easy-to-read display that allows for accurate voices is revealed. The calibration is done on the left potentiometer between 435 and 445 Hz, whereas the right one chooses between mute, bypass or thru mode.

Now I'm editing some of my own creations, which is pretty easy and intuitive, thanks to the ease of use and a great editor. At the beginning I limit myself to various amp types without effects. The sounds sound much more plastic to my ears than the factory presets and have a relatively good directness and transparency. Especially the crunch sounds, which are always a difficult topic for digital pictures, are well hit. In comparison, I would settle the sound quality of the Ampero about the Mooer modelers, in some places they are also stronger and in my opinion are sometimes even just a touch below Helix and consorts. Of course, one should not neglect the drastic price difference to the mentioned models.

The effect variety of the Hotone Ampero is immense and for a pedal of this price range in surprisingly good quality.

Next, I'll look at the effects, which are consistently good quality.

The Arion Chorus emulation used here sounds warm, the compressor can work very harmoniously and musically and the tracking of the octaver, as here in the polyphonic model, works very clean and fast.

Loading your own IRs is not a problem, and while the on-board folds sound good for the most part, some models still show increases. You hear the above Marshall 800 model with a third party fold, in this case a 68er Marshall box.

Next I want to test the use of the acoustic guitar and grab a Breedlove Oregon with piezo pickups. The input is switched to Acoustic, as Amp the AER simulation is selected and a dreadnought convolution is placed on the signal. The typical piezo chirp can be easily eliminated and the western guitar sounds a touch "real". Of course, you also have the option to edit the signal with the EQ even further.

In addition to playing directly into a desk or the DAW, the Ampero can also be hooked into the return of an amp or directly into a power amp. In this case you can deactivate the speaker simulation either globally or via preset.

The Hotone Ampero offers a lot for its money and that too with extremely compact dimensions. Its sound is convincing, even if its directness and grip are not quite up to the top staggers of the amp models, but they are also many times more expensive. The variety of effects is immense and for a pedal of this price range in surprisingly good quality. However, the biggest pluses of the Ampero are certainly the handy dimensions, the ability to load impulse responses and the excellent editing options via touchscreen and software. With this equipment and for just under 400 euros, it is a perfectly round thing, whether as an all-in-one solution or as a backup rig for the gig bag.
