Kind of carried over from my post on the GT-8 forum. I figured they are pretty close so it didn't matter but in all fairness for the people searching for info on the GT-6 I will finish in its own thread here.

The original question was about using manual mode, 4 cable method, eq and effects loop.

Ok gentlemen, I figured it out. I didn't care for it but the 4 cable method and manual mode was much better but still lacked, The amp still colored it then the gt6 colored it again, yuk. I ran down to Guitar Center and bought a 1/4 stereo(both outputs on the pedal) cable to go into an old stereo amp and speaker from the GT-6. I ran it as a PA, much much better. It actually sounded pretty good, then I got into the EQ section and played around there and it started to really shine.

I didn't see it in the manual, but it should be put in writing to not use this with a guitar amp as it will sound like crap!!!

I know a guy that used nothing but a VG88 on stage and their band pack the very large Vegas lounge to standing room only every night they played. No joke! Every one of their band members that played a guitar, including the keyboard player, (and he only did a couple of fills) had one programmed by this guy. They did classic rock covers, and I swear to you it was very difficult to tell them from the real thing. Now I realize why I never saw an amp on stage, they suck through a guitar amp.

Maybe I should keep my mouth shut so I can grab maybe a gt-10 or something even better for a song. I mean if they knew why it sounded so bad maybe they would keep them, hahaha.

Now that I have it sounding better its time to play around with all of the patches Gumtown has with the floor board software.

I don't really understand some of what the manual says so if anyone is still around using this old stuff and could help an old man out I would be appreciative. For example, and I know I just said I tweaked in a statement above, the EQ. I just started playing around not really understanding what I just did. Its not like its a slider, has a few more options. Where can I find in depth info on what it means? Lots of other things as well but for now I would just like to start with the basics.

Thanks everyone.

The "Output Select" options determine whether the GT-6 should be connected to a full range system, guitar amp input, or guitar amp return.

"Line/Phones" output select is for running into a full range system (P.A.), the GT-6 cabinet simulation is enabled in this mode.

"Combo Return" or "Stack Return" are for using only the guitar amp -power amp section only, bypassing the preamp,
where the GT-6 output is plugged directly into the guitar amp 'return' or line in. 4CM can also be used in this mode,
but only the guitar amp's 'preamp' or the GT-6 'preamp' can be enabled, but not both (sounds crap). Cabinet simulation is disabled.

"Combo" "Stack" "Small amp" are used with the GT-6 plugged into the amp's input, GT-6 preamps should be avoided and used for effects only.

Thanks Gumtown. I might give the stack and combo return methods another try. Thanks for that explanation BTW, very helpful. So far, I'm digging just using the PA. I've found some very usable tones, even ones I hated before hand. I definitely need to play around some more.

admsustainiac, thank you for posting that info. I'm starting to read through it. So far, its just what the doctor ordered.

I see lots of reading in my future.

Thanks again guys.

sixstringsid

LOL, my head hurts. Wow the info just in GT-8 Brilliance is staggering and I'm not even half way through it..... God bless you guys. I will have many more questions. I've got a small list going, mostly acronyms.

I can see an upgrade in my future. GT-8, 10, or not?

gumtown

The GT-100 is quite good, the GT-6 and GT-8 knobs tend to wear, and may cause random parameter shift issues.
The GT-10 has far more features than the GT-8, but many did not like the baked in tone it produced.

Each newer unit has a better and refined COSM tone (Amps sound better).

For what I do I will probably never need much more than the GT6. Is there somewhere I can find the differences between the 6 and 8? Some of the things I'm reading in the Brilliance article seem to reference stuff that I may not have in my 6.

As far as the shifting error goes, I do have one that I have seen 3 or 4 times in the 4 years I've had it. The volume will drop out to just about nothing slowly. A quick little blip on the volume pedal returns it back to normal volume. I may not see it again for months on end. Like I said, for what I do, I'm not going to stress it. If the 8 is a far better unit and I can get a good deal, I will go for it. For now I'd just like to use it and have it sounding good.

So much awesome info. I can't really fault the manual. If you think its bad you should read my very old Zoom 1010 manual, lol, its worse than horrible.

gumtown

An easy way to compare the GT model differences is to install the GT-6FxFloorBoard and GT-8FxFloorBoard editor software, and visually compare the feature differences.

Hey guys, I think I'm loosing my mind. Been reading the brilliance PDF and it says to adjust the input level to about the letter U on the meter. How in the world do I do that? I've search high and low. Read the friendly manual, searched google, and found some info in another thread, but have yet to figure it out. I have two guitars that do push into clipping(at least reading the meter), the worse of the two, my Jackson USA Soloist with a JB will push up to the last two indicators on the meter.

https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=22262.msg161406#msg161406

I've got the Floorboard software running but I can't find it in there either.

Can one of you nice gentlemen show me where to adjust this?

Thanks guy.

gumtown

The GT-6 does not have an input level control.
It is in the GT-8FxFloorBoard system > input/output settings.
With the GT-8 editor to view the system/custom settings,
in the Preferences/Midi menu, set debug mode to 'enabled', press O.K.
Then enable the "connect" button, the system properties will now be displayed without the GT-8 connected.

The GT-8 and upward have an input level setting, the GT-10 upward have 3 guitar input levels to set for different guitar types.
The requirement for debug mode on the GT-8 editor is because from the GT-8 upwards, the unit is capable of duplex real-time system exclusive data transfer,
so no need for the "Bulk Mode" process, data is automatically updated.

Well I guess that explains why I can't find it. So, do I not worry about it?

This is a cut and paste from the article using "Method 2: Straight into a guitar amps FX Return jack"

2. Don't plug the preamps of the GT-8 in the FX return of your amp without adding an EQ (the onboard EQ of theGT, of course) between these two devices. Enable the "hi cut filter" of the EQ, setting it on 6 kHz for example.Boost the "high" range of +/- 10 db to compensate the loss created by the hi cut filter. You have now a nice roundroll off in the high frequencies, which looks like the natural response of a tube preamp. Then, set your level withthe little black knob near the guitar input of your GT. Maybe you'll have to set it full up (and maybe not). Play yourpatches and listen.

I can find the High cut filters in the effects but not in the preamps section. I'm assuming that it does not exist in the gt6, is that correct?

Sorry for all the retarded questions. Seems that these two systems are more different than I thought.

gumtown

The High cut is in the GT-8 Equaliser section only.
The GT-6 does not have this.

Try this in the GT-6 Equaliser, it should be the nearest equivalent.

**********Equalizer***********
[On/Off] = On
[Low EQ] = 6 dB
[Low mid Frequency] = 100Hz
[Low mid Q] = 1
[low Middle EQ] = -12 dB
[High Middle Frequency] = 8.0kHz
[High Middle Q] = 1
[High Mid EQ] = -20 dB
[High EQ] = 10 dB
[Effect Level] = 0 dB

Using the High Mid band.
Note I also added a bit of roll-off for the very low eq using the low mid band.

Wow, that woke up two tube amps, one in the return jack and the other straight in(no loop). I'll have to try it on a few others.

Thank you very much. I hope you guys don't mind me pestering you. I really want to know how to use this board.

sixstringsid

Dumb question, could I use a FS-6 with the GT-6 and if so, what's it worth? didn't see an answer on a google search.

Thanks

Yes you can use an FS-6 or FS-7, or any other (DIY?) two button momentary foot switch.

I guess I should have been more clear. I was referring to a used unit. I found one for $45. Found a used gt-10 for $150 too. The 10 gonna have to wait, bills come before fun  :'(

Thanks

Hey gumtown,

I have the UM-One, driver installed and I can't seem to get the GT-6 to communicate.  My battery appeared Low and I wanted to backup my patches before I change the battery.  Will the patches be lost if I change the battery quickly?

I've put it in bulk mode and tried downloading the patches but it keeps coming up with

gumtown

As you speak today, I am working on the GT-6FxFloorBoard editor, 2 things,
1) the issue with communication
2) making the GUI screen size user scalable
