Title: How well plays Hawaii?
Post by: CodeSmart on November 26, 2018, 01:11:49 PM
Snowing here soon so time to pack the bags for Hawaii.
Maui, Oahu(Honolulu) and Big Island (Dec 18'th 2018 - Jan 8'th 2019)  8)
Anything I should know about gear shops, music or friendly VGF-members?

Try to avoid the Timeshare meeting seminars  - which could suck up 8 hours of vacation time in exchange for discount tickets to attractions

One of the Hilton towers has a nice ukulele store...  Beautiful stuff, nice mix of affordable and high end.

Careful, or you'll own a couple!

Ukuleles seem to be getting more popular. I think for guitar players it be quite easy to pick up a 6-string version.

The high-end hotels are often quite friendly & open for visitors to drop in. You might hear some local music there, including slack key guitar. i love Hawaiian music.

Rent a van . Get a good tent & camping gear .

Forget about the tourist traps and if the weather is good camp on the beaches , you won't regret it .
This is how I first went to Hawaii before moving there in the 80's .

Oahu is a metropolis - spend as little time there
Kauai is outstanding head to the south shore or the north .
Maui is called the prefect island lots of out of the way points of beauty/interest
Molokai is a lot like Kauai - small - but choice
The Big Island has everything the others have except the giant population like Oahu - I'm moving there soon .

Take your acoustic too - it's a stronger bet to gain local insight to the local musicians and the music scene in hotels and night clubs .

Aloha man - have a great time .

My favorite time in Oahu was 4 years ago,  when  we found a local native-born Hawaiian man , he gave us a tour of the North Shore. & many spots off the beaten path - places you'd only gain access to if you have your own car and a local guide.

I just noticed this today. As far as live performance with my guitar synth, I use a GR-55 but mostly as a backing tracks player. When I play in church, I'll also plug my Godin into the GR-55 and use a COSM acoustic setting. I have a playlist Hawaiian covers on SoundCloud:

As I recall the only use of a GR voice was a uke on "Haleiwa Hula".
