Some strumming on this one, still cant quite work out how good it is at that though
I see chords being strum but the sounds are so over the top its impossible to hear if its a chord coming out. there are certainly times when he is picking strings but the sound doesn't seem to change. They keep using the word "polyphonic" but they don't specify 6 note polyphony. Technically if it can distinguish and play only 2 notes at once that could be considered as "polyphonic".
There was one fairly nice organ sound on this demo the rest were just laughable.
I realise it is VERY early days but it would nice to hear some useful sounds instead of sounds straight out of Forbidden Planet.

The Boss SY-300 seemed to initially leap out with much a do and fanfare,
but now there is nothing?
Most videos or reviews are dated 18~25 April
Why are there no more demos being posted, and with the few current posted demos,
why are the sounds demo'ed so c**p, like squelchy farty noises, don't any of these 'named' artists know how to program decent synth tones?
I think I might like to get a Boss SY-300 for myself, so far I'm not sure,
I have a basic understanding of what is in the SY-300 and the sounds it should be capable of producing.
Maybe more videos should be posted with better synth tones, something to raise my G.A.S. levels.
The videos so far of live demo's seem to indicate the artists were handed a new SY-300 2 hours prior to the show (or less) and told to make some nice sounds to showcase the product.
I would like to think this is a product worthy of making a 3rd party editor for, I think I should be excited about it ???
I have emailed my last known direct contact at Roland on this, but as of yet..... no reply :-[
Maybe there is a media gagging order on any more P.R. until the product is officially released and on sale?
I'm surprised there aren't newer/better demos by now. I hope my concerns are not supported by reality since I pre ordered one...
Here's what I Know.
At this hour there are Very limited number Boss SY-300 pre production prototypes in possession by the usual suspects who provide "artist patches" for Boss Tone Studio. There are non disclosure agreements in effect that prevent these artist patches and Video Demos from being distributed anywhere other than from official Roland/Boss sites. These will be available soon, (July 2015) at Boss Tone Central.
Roland /Boss controls the timing for official release, to finalize firmware, and debug BTS.
The official release date for the Boss SY-300 to dealers and Boss Tone Studio for SY-300 is still on schedule for July 2015
Also Roland /Boss is maintaining their policy on not directly supporting tools for "User to User" patch exchange. But hopefully they follow the lead of the GP-10, and post the complete MIDI IMPLEMENTATION Doc -without the need for signing a non disclosure agreement.
Also I don't expect the Boss SY-300 to have a sizable useful "SY-300 User Created" patch database until summer 2016, and these will be available here:
https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?board=191.0 (https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?board=191.0)
So 4 more weeks of patience is required
It's rather like complaining in June 2007 why there are no decent demos /patches for the VG-99, which never reached hands of customers until late 2007.
It's just that period of silence which is a killer,
time seems to slow down when you are waiting for more news.. :P
I thought the Gundy Keller video was good and professional but too short, just a teaser.
The Alex Hutchins live demo ones have not impressed me so far, a bit unprepared,
and stated by himself "never programmed a synth before".
The Japanese presentation/demo, I really don't understand that playing style at all ???
it didn't seem to demonstrate much except the same sound over & over again.
Where are those innovative synth programmers of the 70's and 80's?
I am looking forward to some great SY-300 demos to come...
Tell you what, that Japanese presentation was a hit at TPG. I don't remember there being a thread for the GR-55 that pickup up steam like there's been for the SY-300.
What i have pickup from the demos is that synth leads sound much smoother than what i could get out of the Gr-55. The slides/hammer-ons just sound spot on to me.
I get the impression Boss rushed pre-production models to NAMM 2015 way in advance of the final production models being anywhere near ready for shipping. We got a limited number of videos while the product was still in development, when it finally gets shipped to dealers we'll start seeing more and more videos.

QuoteI get the impression Boss rushed pre-production models to NAMM 2015 way in advance of the final production models being anywhere near ready for shipping.
Its a fact that EVERY new product from Roland /Boss shown at NAMM / MUSIKMESSE Trade shows are rather "rough around the edges"
You should have seen the 1995 Winter NAMM debut of the Roland VG-8 - the User Interface was barely 10% complete.
Not sure why folks are surprised regarding the delay between 1st showing of Boss SY-300 at Musikmesse ( April), then 1st production run availability in July
This is 100% a repeat of the same "3 month lag" schedule as last year's Boss GP-10 release schedule.
I suppose the difference is there is more "pent up demand" for the SY-300 vs GP-10
The 2011 GR-55 was the last Roland / Boss unit I recall that shipped within 4-5 weeks of its initial release at a music Trade Show, and that tight schedule was mostly due to Roland NOT providing a GR-55 GUI Editor. They told me VG-99 was delayed 5 months due to the VG-99 Editor debug routine.
Id rather Roland / Boss take their time and iron out bugs with the
Boss Tone Studio Editor for SY-300 - and not waste our time with a buggy "rush job unit that is typically not functional / reliable enough yet for live use.
July will be here soon enough.
QuoteOr are you saying that it was backstage at NAMM 2015 and we just didn't see it?
At Winter NAMM 2015 , Boss SY-300 was NOT on display, and not even mentioned as "arriving soon" - there was a very tight clamp on info.
Gundy Keller had a very short time March 2015 to create the initial SY-300 demo video we all have seen countless times.

The Gods must be listening to Us ;D
Yeah, OK...
It clearly shows chords, played SOFTLY so you can't really tell what's going on polyphonically.
...with a loud, snapping fast lead figure on top.
Here's Roland/Boss' demo video script:
Loud, bangin' drums or rhythm figure to get everybody jumping!
Punchy bass to drive home the beat!
Screaming, wailing lead with lotsofnotesplayedreallyfast to show you that, well, it will play screaming wailing notes really fast!
Plenty of echo or other FX blended to show that Boss has FX! Echos especially!
Repeat again and again!
Yes, it would be nice to hear someone do nothing but chordal comping, but Roland marketing has probably decided that its largest target of potential buyers, are not interested in hearing a demo of chordal textures. Probably age driven decisions. That's cool, we are not that far away from finding out first hand what it's all about. I think my first composition with it will be called "Get Off My Lawn"!
;)
Look, though we all want to hear how it does on the chord thing, every kid wants to know "Will it DJENT? Will it sound like Skrillex?" That's why we're not getting the sort of thing we're really into here....
I'll write the B side to your tune called "If that thing comes into my yard again I'm gonna' keep it!"
Maybe Elantric's band "The Dentures" will cover it.
Forgive me if this is already here, but I don't think it is. Same basic demo at Musikmesse, but he talks about his process in programming a bit.

Thanks for posting those. I hear some stuff that will definitely be fun to explore.
All three 'sound designers' seem to have this common retro early eighties fusion synth sound. Some of that I love but it also has me thinking the SY300 might be a bit limited. Either that or those 3 guys are more alike than I would have guessed.
Right, now I'm hearing LFO's synced with the track tempo I'm getting interested again. And yes, some of the demos are a little bland but it's a Roland synth demo and that's par for the course.
I'm starting to feel hopeful the SY-300 can actually deliver some genuinely interesting sounds when used properly i.e. with a spirit of sonic experimentation. As much as I admire Alex Hutchings as a technician of guitar playing, he does tend to produce rather bland unlistenable jazz fusion nonsense most of the time. I'd love to hear what someone like Johnny Marr or Adrian Belew would make of the SY-300.
Marr with an SY-300 - that would be interesting to see what his style would bring out
Radiohead would take this into some interesting places.
I like Gundy's vid. Favourite sounds?
TB303 - although he seemed to be controlling the tempo sync with tap tempo. :-\ this machine better have midi sync.
GiantStep - very nice. especially the chord that comes in around 3.32
Mojobone - :)
Ultimate Bs - Killer! I fully expect this machine to do convincing bass sounds.

As far as technically, I was hoping for polyphony, not shredding.
But as far as sonically, I want to hear people taking it in new directions, not old ones. That's not so much a demand of this patch over that one, just playing something that isn't tired.
Orren
Thanks for posting the videos as they surface.
At this point, unless I hear some stuff more like what Gundy Keller was doing and less like the 1980's I'm probably going to surrender to the urge to redirect my SY-300 funds to a copy of Omnisphere 2 and let the Fishman Triple Play be my key to making any guitar a synth guitar....

Well I find it very thankful that someone takes the time to show us how sound all factory patches.
Its probably the most informative video to date and shows a fairly broad and interesting sound palette. There seems that we have a new instrument.
The only regret is that he did not take the direct sound by line to better hear the sound quality of every sound and avoiding the sound of the guitar.
Then the problem will be for each of us, as musicians, to take it to new territories.
With the potential that it has I am sure we'll hear some interesting things with this device.
QuoteAt this point, unless I hear some stuff more like what Gundy Keller was doing and less like the 1980's I'm probably going to surrender to the urge to redirect my SY-300 funds to a copy of Omnisphere 2 and let the Fishman Triple Play be my key to making any guitar a synth guitar
I'm afraid I have come to the same conclusion, as much as I really wanted to work with it in interesting non traditional approaches. In fact, because of an unforeseen shortage of funds, I went ahead and upgraded to Omnisphere 2.0, which is vastly superior, in every way except the ability to use a 1/4" input. However, the new upgrade allows you to import any audio source into Omnisphere, and that is too much to pass up. So, hopefully I'll be able to give the SY a whirl when better times come round.
Omnisphere is truly king in synthesis, and my FTP gives me everything I need to used it!
Just remember that Roland typically has some of the worst presets on the planet. Consider what you might be able to get out of it given its total feature-set, instead.
We won't really know what this thing is capable of until one of the talented programmers on this forum buys one and starts pushing boundaries.
In the meantime... it is pretty weird that so few of the demonstrators want to try interesting chord voicings etc. Polyphony over a single 1/4" cable is the single most novel selling point the SY-300 brings to the table, and it's largely being ignored. It's like no one quite gets the point. (I'll file this with my other unsolved mysteries, along with Line 6 demonstrating their newest modeler with one and only one amp model.)

It seems like they have been more focused on showing the super low latency, as opposed to the polyphony.

True - hence all the shredding.
Which - don't get me wrong - is also great! The speed, and the idea of pitch bend
truly working on a guitar synth, is very exciting.

Impressive!
Well the moment of truth has arrived. I got an emaii to tell me the SY-300's are on the way to them and asking me to verify I still wanted to order it.
So, after watching the demo videos again, I said yes. I need to feel that direct connection and truthfully quite a few of the presets in the 'Artist' packages are something I can either enjoy or build from so I'm all in.

I'm in the group of people listing my current home for sale this week, and when it sells, buying a new home within a few mile radius. I'm guessing that's a pretty small group. ;) But it also means I'll be living vicariously through your experiences until I can unpack my studio in a new place, and then start adding to it again!

Thousand dollar car ain't worth a dime
You lose your thousand dollar every time
Oh why did I ever buy, a thousand dollar car
Thousand dollar car is gonna let you down
More than it's ever gonna get you around
Replace your gaskets and paint over your rust
You'll still end up with something that you'll never trust
Thousand dollar car's life was through
'Bought 50,000 miles 'fore it got to you
Oh why did I ever buy, a thousand dollar car
A thousand dollar car ain't even gonna roll
'Til you throw at least another thousand in the hole
Sink your money in it, and there you are
The owner of a two thousand dollar thousand dollar car
If you've only got a thousand dollars
You ought to just buy a good guitar
Learn how to play it it'll take you farther
Than any old thousand dollar car
If a thousand dollar car was truly worth a damn
Then why would anybody ever spend ten grand
Oh why did I ever buy, a thousand dollar car

La grandissima novità nel mondo dei guitar synth - BOSS SY-300
Come mai SY300 è così innovativo? Perchè è il primo ed unico guitar synth a funzionare con il normale jack per chitarra!
Sentiamo come suona, con il mitico Tony Marrale!!!
Italians are weirder than I previously thought, or Roland Italy has some tight budget constraints.
Starting to get excited.
Major GAS attack!!! I just said screw it, and paid for it!! My vocal harmonizer setup is ready for the grand experiment!!! :o
...and now it's possible to go wireless with a guitar synth!!!!!
And I woulda grabbed one too. But my wife surprised me for my birthday and I guess I'm getting a new computer. Oy! It just came out, I have time!
Wireless with a mic too!

Yes, but it still looks like he's only plucking 3 notes at a time.
I've emailed Roland to get a confirmation.
Their specs in the Owner's Manual only list 3 oscillators, nothing about the number of voices.
Typically a synth's spec lists the polyphony in maximum simultaneous voices, and then lists the number of oscillators allowed per voice.
I started out hopeful, but I am becoming more convinced by everything I see and hear that there are a total of 3 oscillators that allows a maximum polyphony of 3 voices, with one oscillator per voice.
This would have been a little easier to accept if they had implemented two complete ADSR's for the filter and amplifier, but they did not. :-(
3 oscillators per string.

I agree with what is being said here, but since we know there is no guitar modeling etc on the SY-300 and all the you tube video sounds like they are from the 80's, perhaps someone could post an example of exactly what they would hope the SY-300 can do.
There is guitar modeling! You have to take a patch with guitar like a patch called wall of sound. Then use the editor and go in there and you will see the sounds! There is also boss pedals in There etc... I made a patch that I swear sounds almost like I sampled Van Halen1 or Satch boogie! If you like that sound! I am thinking the whole unit is COSM. The guitar is the best Cosm to me so far it sounds realistic. I was never a big cosm fan because it always sounded harsh and I tried eq but it just was harsh. Not This unit, sounds nice and analog like.
I think you may be correct... the source for the input determines the main characteristics of the COSM interpretations. Proprietary indeed!

I was just cruising through about half of the factory presets as I ran out of time. I did turn on my Fender M-80 solid state's distortion every so often just to see what it would do. I tweaked nothing on the unit at all. The tracking is insanely good. There is no way to experience any latency whatsoever. It is new technology that has bypassed that annoying limitation. I didn't play anything super fast because I was interested in actually listening to sustained notation. Mitch Gallagher at Sweetwater can play rings around me and he couldn't lose the tracking with 64th notes. Boss has done it folks and the best part is you don't need a special hexaphonic pick up or cable. Just a 1/4" jack like any guitar. .

Now, thats what Im talkin about!!! This is only getting better and better! Whats not to love about this synth??? Mine shipped today, I cant wait lol...
I keep hearing everyone say the sounds are to 80s... If you think about it, the 80s were a booming time for synthesis based music...Since grunge and alternative dominated the scene , synths have gone the wayside... Products like this are going to bring it back in a big way and in a new way... Again, I cant wait till mines delivered!!
There will be many who buy the Boss SY-300 , then after one day of playing the factory presets will dismiss it as being "too buzzy sounding" - and return it or re-sell it on Ebay at a loss.
I predict by Late 2015, a few SY-300 users will create sets of incredible SY-300 patches that sound like nothing heard so far, and much better than the factory presets.
I totally agree with your prediction... The factory presets were rushed in my opinion... Who programed them?
A moog without good programing sounds like crap if it even makes a sound at all , but in the hands of people like Terry Watkinson , Keith Emerson, Richard Wright, or Doug Johnson they becomes monstrously epic , timeless and magical...
Not to mention, the most iconic synth leads of all time were done on equipment with no presets and weren't even polyphonic...
.
QuoteThe factory presets were rushed in my opinion...
Factory presets on most gear are created to show off the units capabilities, and are always rushed with limited time, to meet a production deadline ship date - its impossible to beg for one more week for programming, which impacts set in stone production schedules.
Often during the process of programming presets, small code bugs are found, and then its a waiting game, only to have one short weekend to deliver the final production presets - These are never the sound designers best efforts, (few will admit they were involved;) and often never reveal all the device has to offer - (witness the VG-99 and GR-55 factory presets!)
Its a terrible job!

I listened to this whole thing and didn't hear a single usable preset. I'm sure there are good sounds in the box waiting to be liberated but the presets suck canal water. I bought the GR55 primarily for decent piano, organ, and string sounds. The presets in that box need tweaking for sure but at least offer a glimpse of what you may ultimately get. Anyone hear a decent piano from the SY300 yet? I'd be interested to see what can be done for those of us who aren't doing a 50's scifi film remake. The tracking is beyond impressive but that means nothing if you can't get the sounds you want out of it.

This is coming from someone who plays live with the synth; so if you are someone who plans on using it for recording, take my 2 cents with a grain of salt.
You can get great organ sounds and some solid string sounds out of it. Piano; well no :P I am loving the hell out of my SY. If you need hyper-realism in your tones; it won't fly. If you have a little leeway in what you find acceptable; it is really great. If anything; I started out 100% biased AGAINST the SY. It just took some time and listening to different clips to see what it could do without the anchor that is the GK pickup system. Ugh.

IF you are not into synthy voices, you probably don't need this box, though... listen to the Artist patches and their videos at Boss Tone Central and you'll hear much more usable patches. I'm an old school Arp 2500 / Moog modular guy who then moved up to the first MIDI synth, a Chroma Polaris and then on from there into FM, wavetables and then sampling. The SY-300 is a subtractive synth with a few waveform options, arpeggiator, envelopes, killer effects, filtering and routing. If you don't like the presets, I doubt you'd be happy with this box. I wasn't wild about the presets as heard initially on YouTube, but what I did immediately pick up from first listen, knowing that it is programmable, is that I could make my own killer sounds. But one person's killer sounds is another's yucky sounds. One day... and I'm sure it will happen... they will make a guitar synth that outputs modelled acoustic representations using the guitar's output as a direct trigger for the pitch and envelope and timbre without having to extract pitch and envelope data and utilize the MIDI middleman. I'd like that too, because I don't care for MIDI live and I hate cleaning up MIDI sequences. That said, a MIDI sequence is wonderful because you can edit and replace voices and all sorts of stuff. So I don't want it to go away... ;D
Now... I would like to run Pianoteq (my piano of choice)
through the SY-300.... That could be cool... along with the billion other experimental things that are possible for the adventurous. Having said all this... I know shortly I'll be hearing a multi-tracked symphonic piece of sorts will all instrumentation created with the SY-300. I'd love the time to tackle that myself.
I guess I am just mistaken about what this box is. I was under the impression that the SY is the next step in evolution from the GR series. Apparently it is more of a parallel product with a different target market. OK, I can get my head around that. I am very new to this world and soaking up the collected wisdom on this forum as fast as my poor brain can absorb it. I am woefully short on time to learn my new GR55 but I like what I hear so far. I am not ready to take it to a gig yet but another month or so and I should be there.
I did see the potential for some decent organ sounds in the SY and of course, the pads and very cool. I wish they could take the ability to track like it does with magnetic pups and apply it to the PCM sounds but that appears to be another hoop to jump though with regards to pitch to midi vs cosm.
Oh well, some day the holy grail of sound will come along and do it all. I doubt I will be able to afford it, though.

Q: What is the difference between the GR-55 and SY-300?
A: For Roland GR-55 Synth, there are sounds of the PCM sound source, you can emulate the sounds of various real instruments.
For SY-300 is not a PCM sound system, you will not be able to issue these sounds.
In addition, We also do not conduct any such conversion to pitch detection and MIDI signal.
The oscillator is caused to oscillate, it makes a sound in a manner that will create a sound from scratch.
Also there is no COSM Guitar Modeling or Alt Tuning possible in the SY-300
yep. Apparently I am guilty of not doing my homework. Sorry for the waste of bandwidth. It is indeed a different animal with different stripes. I am relieved, to be honest. If I bought a GR55 and it was immediately superseded by a bigger-better-faster device I would be quite miffed. Given what I know now (thanks to you) the SY-300 is not the device I want, the GR55 is. Any rumors on a successor to the GR55? It has to be due by now.

Hello all! I am new to the forums and made a demo video in the form of an 80's medley.
Below is my demo video of the Boss SY-300 and Roland TD-11 KV-S. Most of the tones are presets with a handful of tones I created and one tone I downloaded from Boss. No eqing was done to the tracks. I recorded the demo after a few days of experimenting with the unit so I know that I can get much more in depth in the future. I hope you enjoy my contribution.

Good stuff Justin. Nice to hear some more of what the SY300 can do. I do want one myself but I think I need to hear more user feedback. And with NAMM not too far away maybe Boss/Roland have some awesome new gear in the barrel. I may wait to see what that brings.

Nice work! Post up your patches in the Exchange! I dig the Axel F riffing ;D
Sound good, thanks for the well played demo
Thanks mchad, JiveTurkey, whippinpost91850, and krysh!
mchad, Hopefully this forum can help you get the user feedback you desire. I have a very positive opinion of the pedal and have found it works great as a standalone unit direct into a pa. For Jazz and ambient gigs, all I use is a SY-300 and a Digitech Jamman Stereo. No amp or other pedals are used save for an external tap tempo button for the SY-300. I posted a review in the stickied user reviews thread under General Discussion.
As for the patch exchange, my patches are not yet at the level of quality that I would want to share them. The goal with the demo wasn't to show polished tones so much as demonstrate just how good the tones are with a few days of messing with the pedal. I am quite happy that people seemed to like the tones and hadn't considered for 1 second that people might want them. Thanks for making me feel good about my tones! When they meet my expectations of quality, I will share them.
I just found this on the interweb,
this guy knows his way around the SY-300.
This is how an equipment demo video should be done.!!!

Austin Sandick,
He's the guy (Roland Rep) I met in Boston who offered any help if the demo model VG-99 I purchased from Guitar Centre had any problems (he was in the store when i purchased it and gave me a business card and an offer to help out if there were any post purchase issues). Suffice to say it died as soon as I got back home and he was not interested in assisting with the offered support. Not even a reply. I think his name is missing an 'S' between the 'n' and the 'd'.

BOSS SY-300 trying to emulate a TB-303
This is not a song, just a quickie, semi-prepared demo of how a SY-300 could resemble a TB-303.
Rough sound, watch that volume knob for spikes.
bass into SY-300, setup with CTL1 as OSC1/2/3-hold and lots of knob twiddling.

How do you hold a note
Herwig Scheck
David Thompson I'm not at my Sy300 at the moment but you can assign different functions to the different switches. In this case "osc1 hold" (and 2 and 3). Great function to "freeze" notes or chords as well!
