This is the best Boss GP-10 Video yet - watch and see the GP-10 in Action,  - but watch Alex's use of both guitar mounted Controls on the GC-1 Strat, and the GP-10 CTL pedals

Guitar extraordinaire, Alex Hutchings, shows us the features and sounds of the exciting new Boss GP10 Guitar Synth.

Good find.

Confirms to me there's no quantum shift in terms of tones to my ears at least but a good demo. Spectacular playing - obvious sounds - thumbs up for S1 chopping muting but woah! horrific pup buzz at precisely 11'06 when he didn't quite time the switch from Strat mags to GK.

Still impressive at the price point I think.

Excellent video of Gundy Keller. Simpler but improved version of the VG99...hmmm, not convinced about that one yet. But great demo with great playing. Also the acoustic guitars seem improved, also on the new GT models.

1:09 patch change. Sounds like less of a patch change gap than a GR-55 to me.

Maybe it's just me but this reminds me of when Roland went from the GR33/30 to the GR20.  I did several gigs with the GR20 that I got with a guitar purchase and found that it lacked in many ways over my GR30.  They dumbed it down so much that I found it unusable.  There were plenty of sounds that I liked on the GR20 but it wasn't easy to change patches especially if a song involved several different patches.  I have a VG99 and a GR55 so I will have to really test this one out at a music store before I could pull the trigger on getting one.

I've decided I'm getting one, I figure it's a good device for use with my GC-1 guitars, but I could use it with any of my other guitars as well.  It's small and compact and would work great for situations where I don't want to bring my bigger rig.  I can use set list maker to pull up the patches I want despite the 2 up/down swtiches for navigating presets, I won't have a problem.  Looks like fun.

QuoteI can use set list maker to pull up the patches I want despite the 2 up/down swtiches for navigating presets,

Assuming you are using the iPad version of SetlistMaker - How do you plan on accomplishing that?

Remember the "plot so far" is it appears the Boss GP-10 will probably NOT be USB Class Compliant, and  for any GP-10 remote control   beyond the Expression pedal, GTRL Jack, or Gk-3 S1, S2, GK-VOL - GP-10 users will be forced to use a PC/Mac running the proprietary GP-10 USB Driver and a suitable app for any remote patch change.

But I hope I'm wrong!

There should be far more real world initial user reviews for Boss GP-10 on  Youtube by next weekend - most GP-10's in USA at this hour are on a HWY in a UPS/FEDEX truck bouncing towards the early adopters.

Thanks for the demo. Its done with a piezo or gk guitar?

Can you share your opinion about if the GP-10 does not need for the subsonic filter device with piezo guitars?

Title: Re: Boss GP-10 YouTube Videos
Post by: drjoness2001 on July 12, 2014, 09:54:38 PM
I did the video with a GK-3 guitar, right out of the box (it is noted at the very beginning of the demo).

I spent today doing back-to-back tests, and yes sub-sonic filters do improve the sound of the GP-10.

But on my test guitars, a recent model Godin LGX-SA, and a GK-3 guitar, the previously subsonic issues were not as bad as with some other guitars, or with the GR-55 or VG-99.

I think if you are using a hollow-body guitar, you would see more of a difference for sure. But the factory GP-10 GR-300 patch (#03) does not have the same level of compression as the main GR-300 solo GR-55 patch, which really amplified the problems. And in my experience the LGX-SA is not as prone to low frequency noise energy as some other guitars.

Also, since the GP-10 does not track pitch-to-MIDI, you do not have the issue of the processor chasing the ghost thumps and bumps. It depends on what your focus is; if you are really keen on the best possible GR-300 recreation, and a few other things, you would like to have the filter, but if you are going for more of the main stream guitar modeling, you might not see the same benefits.

Thanks for your demo, Wayne.

Two things i noticed:
1) in the last init patches you hold a chord and change patch. There is some delay. Pretty similar to the VG99 I would think.
2) in the Roland sound demo I noticed tempo flashing CTL Leds. But they did not flash continually - like they were skipping some beats. In Wayne's demo there were no flashing leds on any patch. The Roland demo must have had different firmware. They obviously tried to get it working, but must have abandoned the idea in higher firmware. Pity. It always has been a missing feature on Roland devices.

EDIT #2: glad I'm wrong about this one...

Here on my GP-10 many factory presets map "tap tempo" to one of the CTL  foot switches with LED that flashes in sync with the tempo.
Also on GP-10 since there exist a broad array of Control assignments, many of the factory GP-10 patches  already offer multiple sounds, like enable 12strings on acoustic model patches, or one CTL switch works as an A/B select for (A) normal PUs feeding a Marshal amp or (B) OSC synth. Also with GK-3 S1&S2 switches mapped to COSM PU  Up/ Down, you can have 5 sound with just the SRV Texas Blues patch alone.

My point is, if you only spin the Patch dial to audition 99 presets, without touching CTL 1,CTL2,or Expression pedal, or Toe down Expression pedal switch, you will be missing a significant amount of the GP-10's performance features.

Good point about trying out the various control features etc the variations are interesting as well. But...the uneditied video is almost an hour long!

So I mostly skipped over the options just to get things down to a more reasonable 13 minutes.

My other option was to break the demo down into groups, 1-25, 26-50, etc, or maybe group patches together, and then post 4 or 5 separate videos.

But I figured that most people just want a quick overview of what the product sounds like, and not a detailed exploration of all the possible variations.

I'm working on some other demos now, but I will not have anything posted nearly as quickly as the patch overview, which I did as soon as I took the unit out of the box.

Thanks! Wayne

In my video, I do have flashing LEDs in sync with the patches, check out patch 04, at around 20 seconds, the CTL1 LED is flashing. It is at the bottom of the screen, and may be tricky to see depending on the size of the viewer.

If they do not look like they are exactly in sync, I think the problem may be the combination of the 30 fps video and the various means of compression the video has to get through before it makes it to playback on YouTube.

Thanks for checking out the video! Wayne

From MusicOverGear (Sensible Musician)

Boss GP 10 OSC Programming using Logic and Re Guitar
http://youtu.be/1wOtSF60O7o (http://youtu.be/1wOtSF60O7o)
I just figured out how to use the Re-Guitar feature in the Boss GP-10 inside Apple Logic. About 3 seconds into it dawned on me that this would be an ideal toolset for making synth patches for the new OSC Synth on the GP-10.

In a nutshell, here is the process covered in the video:
Create a new project in Logic with the needed settings
Choose a patch on the Logic Retro Synth to customize and clone
Transcribe that patch to the GP-10, using Logic to loop a short passage and toggle back and forth between the GP-10 and the Retro Synth.

IMHO it is a very handy way for someone like me to get good patches on the GP-10. I'm not to the level yet where I can come up with an amazing patch from scratch, so this starts me off with a great sounding patch in Logic, which I can customize. Then I can build the same patch on the GP-10 by copying each parameter. Finally I can customize it more within the GP-10 to suit the sound I want, combinations with pickups, and the physical controls I need for performance.

I was a little overwhelmed when I first unpacked the GP-10, but with this workflow it has become easy. Now if that editor is ever published, it will get even faster and easier! :)

HTH
Michael

PS Sorry about audio pops and general glitchiness - this is the first screen cap video I tried to make. Next time I will solve technical problems before I make a long vid; but this time it would have taken too much time to redo the whole thing.

GK Settings on the Boss GP-10

This is what I have come up with so far to get good sound and feel from the different models on the Boss GP-10. I did this vid because I had been mislead (by Roland manuals - I think GR is short for, "GRRRR!") to think that I needed high GK pickup sensitivity for synth tracking.

I found some good info on VGuitarForums and applied it to my setup on the Boss GP-10. This vid relates what I've learned so far. Hopefully it will be helpful to others in a similar situation.

HTH,
Michael

We need a 'Thanks' button, Elantric great video there as I too use Logic Pro X. This helps me make my decision to get one of these through the Group Buy

Unfortunately this video goes screwy towards the end, right at the point where he is cutting the double sided tape and fitting the pup ??? :
Boss GP-10 and GK-3 Unboxing and Installation (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KtjqmZ_SKcs#ws)

If anyone has any good video links to fitting the GK3 pup to a stratocaster I would sure appreciate. I did not find a good overview video of assembly on YouTube.

There's no "thanks" or "like" but there is "[applaud]" under the user name and Karma points.

There is a lot of GK-3 info here: https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?board=11.0 (https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?board=11.0)  I have been reading through that whole sub-forum, absorbing info. I personally have always just mounted GK's with pickup height screws (like on a jazz bass) and rubber tubing. Haven't had any issues that way, but also I am discovering all kinds of subtleties since switching to a GP-10 (from MIDI-only GI-20). If I learn anything significant about mounting I'll make a vid and post it in that forum category.

Check this out. Latest Alex Hutchins video in conjunction with Andertons. 30 minutes of GP-10 demo. Just love the B Bender effect. I think my credit card is going to take a hit tomorrow. Wonder if they will do a deal for a GP-10 and a Strymon Big Sky?

Boss GP-10 Guitar Processor Demo with Alex Hutchings & the Capt (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CjKvuHri61k#ws)

The Boss GP-10 is one of the most versatile products we have reviewed in a long time and is packed with features that offer huge playing potential and can unlock creativity.

From 0.00 to 23.50 the GP10 is plugged direct in to an audio interface, so you're only hearing the GP10 amp models.
From 23.50 we switch to using the GP10 in to a Victory V10 guitar amp that we mic up.

For more info on the Boss GP10 - please go here...

Hope you enjoyed the run through - feel free to comment below or contact the store directly if you have any more questions,

Cheers

In this review we show what this thing is made of, and even (in video one: http://youtu.be/XUPwYIy65lY (http://youtu.be/XUPwYIy65lY) how to fit the GK-3 pickup. There are a load of sounds demonstrated as well as many features that this unit has. It's one of the better guitar effects pedals or synths I have used along with the VG-99 and it does sound good.

Unlike the GT-001, this Roland unit is made like a brick toilet :) and should last for years to come.

There will be a review in depth on my website www.tonymckenzie.com (http://www.tonymckenzie.com) as well as other videos on my youtube channel www.youtube.com/tonymckenziecom (http://www.youtube.com/tonymckenziecom) so check it all out (there's about 123 videos on there now)...

A demo of the new GP-10 guitar processor from Boss.

This video aims to give an insight into the powerful capabilities of the GP-10. I'm using the Boss Editor as this gives the best visual representation, however, most editing can be done on the unit itself.

The recording was done over the GP-10's USB output into Logic 9.

I'm using a GK3 equipped Epiphone Les Paul Standard. In the first part of the video I do a comparison of the actual magnetic pickups of the guitar and the modelled pickups via the GK3 by selecting Elec gtr and LP. This is done both clean and through an emulated amp. The pickups fitted to the Epi are Iron Gear Dirty Torque and Blues Engine. Differences could be down to the type of pickup Boss has modelled.

I take a quick look at the effects section and at the instruments modelled, i.e banjo, sitar, acoustic, synths etc..

I also look at the altered tuning capabilities then finish up by demoing some of the patches available via download and some of the standard presets.

NB: everything is being done in real time.

Having problems with tracking on the OSC synth so have left this for another demo maybe.

This is only scratching the surface of what this can do. You can use a normal guitar input and use it as an upfront fx and amp modeller. Put it in the effects loop as a multi-effects. Plug it straight into a power amp and have all options available providing you have a GK3 equipped guitar. You can also just use it for down tuning by selecting the modelled pickup of your type of guitar and bypassing everything else. You can then instantly tune your guitar to anything you like at the push of a switch.

Nearly all parameters are assignable to the expression controller or one of the CTL switches on the unit. Has additional CTL socket for say a Boss FS-6 footswitch for more control.

It also has an eight track USB interface. This will will record a stereo pair and each of the six strings onto its own separate track in your DAW. This enables re-amping as well as re-guitaring! Also has pitch to MIDI over USB so you can play soft synths etc. on your Mac or PC.

A few limitations are: no standard MIDI connection. Non standard USB compliant interface. No option for 4CM.

Hours of fun to be had!

Thanks for watching.

The new GP-10 Boss puts an entire world of tones and all manner of tunings within your control from one compact processor that's affordable, plus incredibly simple to use.

With one of the Roland GK-compatible pickups mounted on your guitar, the GP-10 lets you mould and sculpt your sound to numerous classic electric and acoustic guitar types and analogue-modelled synths, including the legendary Roland GR-300. Not stopping there, you can even transform a guitar into a bass! Plus you have access to other altered tunings, including popular open tunings, 12-string tones, and "down" tunings that are essential for today's ultra-heavy rock styles, all at the press of a button, instantly!

Don't have a GK Pickups? Then the versatile GP-10 also functions as a full-featured multi-effects processor for normal pickups too! Giving you the world of COSM amps and effects. In addition, USB connectivity lets you capture your GP-10 tones straight into your computer and you can even use it (along with the GK Pickup of course) as a MIDI convertor to play all those otherwise dormant soft synths you've got sitting in your computer!

Ask Skunk what his favorite guitar is and he will enthusiastically exclaim, "My own! A Roland synth guitar made of Plexiglas, with hand-wound Skunk-O-Sonic pickups." It is the only such guitar in the world.

Many moons ago, exploring the world of guitar synthesizers, Skunk asked Roland to make him a six-string out of plexiglass, which he believed would minimize problems he'd been having—particularly when recording—with more resonant wood-fashioned instruments. The first such guitar was stolen out of a rental truck in 2006. Skunk asked its luthier, Makoto Sugimoto, to make him another, identical right down to The Ventures guitar pick embedded in the neck-piece (a tribute to Skunk's favorite band). Serendipitously, considering the title of this book, the serial number on the back of the headstock contains the number 108.
"Jeff is the nicest guy in the world. I was very pleased that I got to photograph his guitar at my studio in Malibu. He was most accommodating about it.

"I went to Jeff's place to get his guitar, and he met me at bottom of his driveway. I'm thinking, 'OK, he's Mr. CIA/Mr. Security – he doesn't want me to go into his house.' I thought that he had these big monitors and he was watching the world. He gave me his guitar case, which was super-heavy. I got home and weighed it, and it was 18 pounds, which is a lot."
"It's a Roland guitar, made out of Plexiglas, so you can see the inner workings of the instrument, which is pretty cool. The other thing about it is, when you flip it around and look at the plate, embedded in it is a pick by The Ventures. Jeff has played with them. He loves The Ventures so much that he had their pic embedded in the guitar."

It's not difficult to come up with your own sounds from scratch on this. If I had more time to play with it when the demo unit was brought to me, I would have done MUCH more with it! A GREAT mix of guitar processor and guitar synth to really take your playing to "otherworldly" places.
