GT-10 - How to use GT-10 as Class Compliant USB Audio interface for iPad

Same technique works with Roland VG-99, VB-99

But the Audio over USB is 16 bit ( similar to Zoom G3)

A step-by-step guide on how to use a Boss GT-10 as an input device for you iPad, using the USB. Instead of using the dated pre-amps on the GT-10 you can use an app like BIAS or JamUp to get good preamps tones, and you can add effects from the GT-10. You can also use the GT-10 to record using an iPad DAW such as Garageband.

Now... why haven't Roland/Boss installed the standard(class compliant)/Advanced(driver required) USB midi options on all USB midi gear?

Agreed - it seems they went backwards, or key people retired and the new recruits lacked the knowledge - or some bean counter vetoed developing 24 bit Class Compliant Audio mode on current products (GP-10, GR-55, SY-300, GT-1, etc) - huge missed opportunity IMHO.

The downside of the old GT-10 / VG-99 "Standard" USB Class Compliant Audio mode is its only 16 bit.

And some clueless folks still claim "24 bit USB Class compliant mode is not possible" ( TC Electronics) (tell that to Focusrite, RME, Apogee, Digitech, etc)

- yet Roland co-wrote the USB 2.0 Class Compliant Audio spec, but only a few select products feature 24 bit USB Class Compliant Audio (Roland Duo Capture EX)

heres a copy of the USB 2.0 devclass audio specification (May 2006)

QuoteMany of the changes introduced in Version 2.0 of the USB Specification for Audio Devices take advantage of the new features provided in the USB 2.0 Specification. With the additional bandwidth made available, high speed USB operation allows the transport of multiple channels of high bit rate audio.

Although I appear to be able to fudge a 24-bit solution for USB Roland devices on my iMac.  I'm not sure why.

Audio MIDI setup sees the RC-300, GP-10 and VG-99 as 24-bit 44.1 khz interfaces.  It's probably truly 16-bit somewhere but the files that get printed are 24-bit 44.1 khz.

Same from Garageband and Logic.

But yes, these devices would sound so much better if it was true 24-bit high bitrate especially on the 99.

Of course they do - set their USB Audio  to "Advanced Mode" and they are 24 bit Core Audio interfaces on Macs, or

24 bit ASIO Audio interfaces on Windows

But if you set USB Audio mode to "Advanced Mode", it will not work with iPad

Must set USB Audio  to "Standard Mode" - and then it works with iPad - but only at 16 bits
