Hello from Germany!
I own a lovely JTV 69 for several years but didn't use it for while.
My problem now: the tone pot only works with piezo / in electronic mode, not working at all when everything is offline and battery outside :(
I think this could only be a mechanic (broken / loose wire?) issue because everything is switched off and the (both) pots should work like on a normal guitar.
I took a quick look inside and saw, that the pot contains 2 pots - OK, one for the electronics and one for the mag pu. Will check the resistant value later
WAny idea about the reason and what / where should I try to search for?

The recommendation of Line 6 is: send it to s service center...
But... I read on various web sites that they ran out of parts and/or repairing there would cost at range of a new guitar.

Thank you so much! I found a lot of DIY upgrade projects here so I hope for tips :)

I think you will find it is working fine, as you say it is working fine on the Piezo, the other half will go into the electronics and be for the Modelled guitar tones via the VDI output.

Return the battery to the guitar (and charge it up), and then try with all the electronics working.

Hi and thx for your answer, but I really can't understand:
if I take battery out of the guitar it should operate like a normal guitar with the magnetic pup AND the using both pots to turn up/down the volume, same with the tone pot... that'S exactly what I remember my guitar did earlier

When I mentioned "piezo" I meant the modellation unit - this works fine, I can see the effect of turning the tone pot in the workbench software.
My idea was:
If the pots are to work without a battery, there must be direct wiring from the pup to the pots - perhaps via the circuit board, but in any case without active components. And this is exactly the path I would like to find and test.

It would be paradoxical if I could use the Variax only as a modeling but not as a normal strat  ::)

This advise assumes you are confident in your abilities to work on the guitar.
The tone pot is - as you noted - a ganged double pot. It uses one layer for the modeling board and the other - like a standard tone pot - for the mags. It should work on the mags with or without a battery.
I did some extensive mods on mine and checked the photos I took. (They aren't great...) Based on the photos and my (failing) memory, I believe there are 2 push on 2 conductor connectors that go to the back of the pot; one for each set of electronics. If there's only 1, that's your problem. The other probably fell off and is floating in the wiring loam somewhere. Plug it back in and you should be good to go.
If they are both there, then I'd pull each and use some contact cleaner on the pins before reseating the connectors. If that does it, great.
If not, then trace those wires back into the loam and find out where they attach to the main board. Make sure the connector is well seated.
Pots rarely fail, but it does happen. If you have a VOM, you can test it to see if it's working. If not, the pot can probably be sourced from Line6. No need to send the guitar in for service, you can most likely swap the pot out yourself.
If you've done all of that and it still doesn't work, now you're down to circuit level repair and, unless your electronics knowledge is way better than mine, you should probably send it to an authorized Line6 repair center.
