Vertech VW-1 Battery replacement

Remember the Vertech VW-1

My Vertech VW-1 has a dead battery, not just flat but dead, and not charging.
I have failed in my best efforts to open the device and replace the battery. It seems to be unable to be opened without destroying the winder.
Does anyone know how to replace the battery?

Our do we just throw it away and buy a better product?
