GM-800 - Tips and Tricks to obtain best tracking

Hi all,

I'm really loving this new Boss GM-800, but I'm getting a lot of hanging notes. It seems like the standard MIDI ON with no matching MIDI OFF situation, but sometimes it's more than just one one note. I'll get a sequence of moving notes that (maybe?) I played just moments earlier.

I'm hoping that this is just an incorrect setup and not something that we're supposed to live with! I've updated to the v1.03 firmware.

Any ideas?

that happens to me  - must adjust the functional GM-800 Low Velocity CUT
to minimize hanging notes


Many here instantly disregard the Low Velocity Cut control as armchair quarterbacks , but zero hands on GM-800 experience because of poor results on prior Roland/ Boss GK Processors

Go to 7:45 minutes for more on LOW VELOCITY CUT , DYNAMICS, PLAY FEEL   controls in the SCENE EDIT, MASTER SECTION , which are unique per each " SCENE " and users preference ON GM-800 to tame false triggers for both internal sounds and MIDI Transmission to other MIDI Synths

I was looking for this and mistakenly thought it was in the Guitar to MIDI section in the editor

It is in fact in the Master section, and is scene specific.

I'm finding that the Low Velocity Cut adjustments didn't fix my problems. They just made me more frustrated. However, I did find something that worked. Go to the string sensitivity screen on the device: MENU > GK SETTINGS > 2nd page. You can adjust the sensitivity of each string. I'm assuming the values differ based on the pickups' distance to the string, the strength of your picking, the phase of the moon, etc. My pickup is in the 1-3mm distance range and I'm getting values ranging from 21 on high E to 60 on low E. Make sure that you save your work!


I dug into the strings and adjusted the setting until I got the graphic bar to the ~75% range and it seems to be holding. While I was in there, I made three GK5 setups, with different average values. If this works, I can use the lower settings for more delicate picking.

This seems to be working so far. I guess I'll keep it a while longer....

If using a GK-3 into a GKC-AD convertor, the GM-800 has a GAIN adjust for the GKC-AD, lowering that may improve tracking.

The String Sensitivity  defaults to "65" for all strings - I prefer 35, for my technique, and then DYNAMICS, PLAY FEEL, LOW VELOCITY CUT
control minimizes notes that continue to sustain inadvertently.

Reducing the string sensitivities made the most difference to the tracking for me. I went from having stuck notes to getting things pretty clean. I haven't really played with the low velocity cuts as of yet but I will do as I try to perfect things. I have noticed that different guitars yield very different responses (not all good) So I'll definitely have to work up a very tweaked set up for each guitar.
