Title: YOUR NEW EMPIRE - GK guitar vid with interesting patches - Three Trapped Tigers
Post by: rocks_are_stupid on September 06, 2017, 09:02:05 AM
Some of you may know about my YouTube channel

Your New Empire
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9Oum8pNS6u073A53Ebjj1A/videos
which exclusively features my various GK modded guitars, here is my latest cover video of a rather obscure current band from the UK - Three Trapped Tigers

Three Trapped Tigers - Cramm (Guitar Cover)
https://youtu.be/bsND89nDE_c

I chose this song as it is technically difficult and also is effect heavy. I'm using 100% modelled guitar patches so there is no analogue signal in this cover, this will hopefully put an end to the dialogue outside the Vguitar community that GK pickups have latency delays or mis-triggering of notes because as you can see in this video, there is no such issue.

I am using a customised Telecaster with both a kill-switch and GK pickup installed, this connects to a GP-10 pedal.

I blame Roland / Boss US Marketing and ineffectiveness at taming false rumors/ bad information

Great stuff. Would you consider sharing the patches for this? Thanks

No problem, I used about 3 or 4 different patches, I'll post them all but which one were you most after?

the one with the synth bass on the bottom string sounds great but any other ones as well if you like. Id just like to get an idea how they were done. Thanks

Really nice song. Interested to know what are the Gk settings you are using in the GP-10 and which version of the Gk  pickup you have installed on the guitar.

Thankyou.
I'm using the Roland GK-3 pickup, a bit harder to tell from looking at the guitar since it's an internal kit.
Next time i'm reunited with GP-10 (currently at studio) I'll upload the patches here  8)

Great thankyou. I looked up that band whos tune you covered. I like your version better. How the hell do you even cover something like that??? Yikes. Great job on the tune.

It was a strange impulse of mine to cover a song like that, it took a long long time making an accurate backing track for myself whilst also learning the tune on guitar. Maybe I'll stick to easier songs from now on  ;D

I've watched this several times.  Brilliant programming job, luthier job and tune-cover job!

Oh god I'm the worst (also I don't know why I'm not getting email reminders when people comment on this thread)

regarding the patches, I've just commented on this in another thread
"(P.S in some of my other threads, people have requested patches which I haven't yet delivered due to me being way from my studio when I remember! I'll set several reminders now so there's no excuse next time i'm there)"

Wow!!! Though it is a cover, it is a very interesting work, I love your version more interesting over the original. So excellent all from music, to performer. It looks like the example when one may uncover all the best and very serious potential from these cosm things. Thank you so much! Hooking to your YT channel!

Here you go, I've forgotten largely how each of these differ but I warn you, I'm not the best patch designer and some may be very loud in comparison to the ones before

Really great work!  Thank you again for sharing!!!

This was my introduction to your work.  Impressed at the playing and the programming and I'm encouraged that you seem to understand the possibilities of this technology very well and are putting it to great use.   Your work is a great example for others!  Seriously.

Now here's my (not really serious) "problem" with your project:  You call yourself a "Synth Guitarist".  Yet what you are doing (at least in THIS example) isn't "synth" really at all.  It's really 6 channels of effects processing...it's modeling and effects processing.  Why the heck would I be bothered by this hair-splitting definition? Because I fear that "Synth Guitar" scares a lot of players away from technology which COULD be helping people expand their music making beyond the tired old guitar sounds of the past.  They could be doing what you are doing; which is really pretty damn cool.

So I'm abosolutely NOT actually giving you a serious hard time for calling yourself a Synth Guitarist...but really bringing up an issue for which you presented a great example:  Hex processing and Modeling can be used in an vast range of ways.  Yet many guitarists shy away from even investigating it.  I hear a lot of guitarists say "I have no need to even try that technology because I don't want to trigger synths".  Well, here's a great example where you are making use of this tech, not triggering synths, and absolutely creating something wonderful.  I hope that those guitarits will actually take a moment to see what you are doing and will realize that you aren't playing "MIDI guitar" here... but really you have an advanced pickup that is feeding into 6 signal processors.... not so dissimilar from what "regular' guitarists are doing...just with 5 more channels of processing freedom and some modeling magic.

So THAT'S my beef with referring to you as a "Synth Guitarist".

Now you'll probably point me to 500 postings in which you are absolutely ripping it up playing pitch to MIDI actual "Synth" guitar... and I'll have to sulk off into a corner again ;-)

I too am blown away by the skill and technique shown in that video cover.

To Vance's point about the use of the title synth guitarist. I think that is very accurate definition and I don't have problem with that title usage.

Many non hex guitarists who use distortion pedals into other FX such as univibe, delays, wah filters Etc, may not understand that they too are actually synth guitarists, and are using modular equipment to achieve that synthesis.

True guitar synthesis is not about triggering samples or VCO's, or virtual oscillators via midi.

In my opinion it's about the guitar string as the oscillator and that wave form  being transformed into a different sound that can be more complex than the original signal.

Hex just gives us the opportunity to increase that complexity and expand the creative potential.

Imagine what Jimi Hendrix would have done with the hex gear we have today.

And of course we can trigger other synthesizers.

Thankyou for posting the patches! Looking forward to trying them out and learning from them.
