How can I connect this up to my Band Helper app on my Android to control my GP-10 and change patches by sending 0 0 1 or 0 0 2 or something equivalent.

I have a GR-55 and control it via a USB to Midi connected it to my Android Tablet without issues. And I love it.  I change songs using a Bluetooth page up down foot switch connected to my Tablet via Band Helper

Each patch has a Midi message for example 0 0 1f could be Grunge and 0 0  2e is Country When I select a song it changes the patch for me.

I searched and couldn't find a topic specifically related to the USB Midi on the GP-10

Will have to come back to you on that one, I am not sure if the GP-10 accepts patch change.
It does not have any channel receive settings there.....

Not sure if it's a patch change per se. But here is an image of the screen Where I setup my patch info.

I also have a Midix-20 from Primova which I hope will make this easier.

My GP-10 responds properly to PC messages.  I'm using one of Codesmart's MIDX-10 units to bridge from 5-pin MIDI.

rmarton123

Thank you. Can you share your connection info? I have Android, MidiX-20 and GP10 and USB to Midi cable

gumtown

Have you tried GPO-10 USB direct to android, via OTG cable?

It's possible latest Androids support Boss products
Spider reported this and of course Condor makes use of Android to control Katana with Android newer than 6.01

CodeSmart

Sure the GP-10 responds to PC.
No problems.

C0h 00h --> Select Patch 0
C0h 01h -->Select Patch 1
...etc...
C0h 63h --> Select Patch 99

With MIDX connect GP-10 to LWR USB.
USB to MIDI into Android somehow and MIDI end into MIDX 5-pin connectors.
MIDX should be in "RED" mode.
But I got more gear than I need...and I like it!

Please check the image.

So if I understand you correctly I can setup a Midi Patch and in the Hex Code section I enter

c0h c01h for patch 2 or
c0h c0fh from patch 16

Or do I leave the h off like so

c0 c01 for patch 2 or
c0 c0f for patch 16

AFAIK - BandHelper uses same MIDI command transmit structure as SetListMaker

Both apps are created by Arlo Leach, and use a common MIDI transmit data structure for both apps

If you are sending BANK CHANGE + CONTROL CHANGE + PATCH CHANGE, the middle parameter should be hex 20 or decimal 32 for Boss control change.
sent as bank 0, cc# 32, patch 0~99  (hex 0xB00000, 0xB02000, 0xC000)

Thank you.

Can you please format that as I would enter it into the image in the attachment?

Is this what I enter into the box?

0xB00000, 0xB02000, 0xC000
0xB00000, 0xB02000, 0xC001
0xB00000, 0xB02000, 0xC002
etc

Please use the syntax as you would enter it into the box in the image I attached.

gumtown

I am not familiar with the Band Helper app, nor the format it requires for input.

Data output sent to the GP-10 or GR-55 for patch 1, 2, 3 would be
B00000 B02000 C000
B00000 B02000 C001
B00000 B02000 C002
so I am guessing that Band Helper adds the prefix numbers for MSB, LSB, Program.

If working with the first 128 patches only (99 on GP-10),
then only
C000
C001
C002
are required.

According to the Setlist Maker topic, the data input format is..

MSB-LSB-Program = GR-55 User Patch#
--------------------------------------
00   00   00           01-1
00   00   01           01-2
00   00   02           01-3
Free "GR-55 FloorBoard" editor software from https://sourceforge.net/projects/grfloorboard/

rmarton123

Perfect. I tried the MSB, LSB and Program entry in Bandhelper and it didn't change the patches

So I'll try the Raw Midi as you suggested. I'll need to do that once I return home. Working now.

Thank you for the details. It was clear but not not specific to the syntax requirements. But what you provided me with now will save a lot of troubleshooting and trial and error.

Thank you Gumtown Very Much!!!! ;D

I have a Boss GP-10 and am connected directly to the pedal via otg cable. When I send midi to the GP-10 there is no patch change on the device.

I have installed Midi Commander and can record patch change messages and I can manually assign patch changes and it works.

So what I think is that BandHelper may not have the capacity to connect to the USB Midi on my GP-10.

Because Midi Commander can listen and speak to the GP-10 I don't think that the issue is with the GP-10.

Please advise me if I'm doing something wrong.

I setup the midi channel to 1 which worked fine with my GR-55.

I set the 3 octets like 0 0 5 for patch 6 and I even tried
b00000 b02000 c005 which is also patch 6 but Bandhelper didn't change the patch to the GP-10

If you are using Android - its possible your Android device is not compatible with GP-10 USB

It must be running Android 6.01 or newer for use with USB and OTG adapter

And even then it still may not work as only some Android devices are compatible with Roland/Boss gear

According to ArloMedia  , the data input format is..

MSB-LSB-Program =  User Patch#
--------------------------------------
00   00   00               1
00   00   01               2
00   00   02               3

MSB-LSB-Program =  User Patch#

Howdy!

Does anyone know if the Keith McMillen Instruments MIDI Expander will allow program change messages on a GP-10 from 5-pin MIDI?

I just bought a used GP-10 on eBay, and didn't even notice the striking absence of MIDI I/O (been using a Gr-55 with SetListMaker on iPad for the last few years.

KMI midi expander unit is only compatible with KMI products

it is not a universal USB host to 5 pin MIDI I/O adapter box

Read the USB Host to MIDI adapter thread for options that work with Boss GP-10

Thank you. I've sent an email to Primova Sound, asking about pricing for the MIDX-20.

The KMI MIDI Expander is designed to work with the KMI SoftStep MIDI foot controller, providing 5-pin MIDI out.  You would still need a Primova MIDX-20 to interface it with the GP-10.  I have this setup and it works perfectly; the downside is that you need 3 units and 2 wall warts to make it work.

Wouldn't it be awesome to have a USB-powered MIDI foot controller that talked directly to GP-10?

i understand you can omit the KMI MIDi Expander and simply connect the KMI Softstep via USB to the MIDX-20 directly ( along with the GP-10

thats why there are two USB Host ports on MIDX-20

Thanks, guys.

I'm not really interested in foot controllers. My setup is a bit simpler than that. I am very, very vision impaired. Even when seated with the GR-55 right at my feet, I don't see well enough to read the GR-55's display. When standing, all bets are off - way off. So, for the past year or so, I've been using SetListMaker on my iPad, which sits on a music stand at eye level. I select a song from the set list, and a MIDI Program Change message is sent to the GR-55, and I don't have to worry about reading the 55's display. Now, I am retiring the GR-55 in favor of the GP-10. I have one which I bought used on eBay on the way to me now. But I just realized yesterday that the GP-10 does not have MIDI I/O, so I am scrambling to figure out how to deal with that, and it looks like the MIDX-20 will bridge the gap between the MIDI I/O coming out of my iPad and the USB port on the GP-10. Does anyone have experience in dealing with Primova? I sent them an email about a day and a half ago, asking for pricing but no response yet - is this normal for them? Also, is there a reseller in the USA where I can buy the MIDX-20?

Thank!,
Lou
