Overwhelmed by choices at the moment, perhaps I can be advised.

Is there much difference between the old SC-55 and the new SD-50 other than the output resolution in the following

Fiddle/Violin
Banjo
Mando
Piano
Horns

Fiddle is most important! If I could buy just one synth that could do that well.

What other device would I use to obtain fiddle tones.

The VG-99 using the "Bowed"  Synth in the VG-99 can get ballpark for Fiddle

COSM Modeling has the lowest latency and responds to your playing and dynamics  near same as playing a real Banjo, Mando with a piezo PU.

FTP driving iPad with IK Multimedia SampleTank - if you are more concerned with nailing those sounds accurately and need Piano - but can live with some latency. (VG-99 COSM is much faster - but not going to provide a Piano sound ) )

Here is a GR-55 Demo

Mercy on Me!

Is FTP preferred over GK-3 for reasons other than convenience?

I already have the GK-3 pickup installed. Wouldn't it be easier for me to go into a computer from the VG-99 by USB (something I wanted to avoid).

maybe I should just buy a GR-55/SD-50 to use along with the VG-99.

Can I split my signal to run a GR-55 and a VG-99 at the same time?????

I need a cheap solution as this is getting way too pricey.

EDIT
I haven't been able to get anywhere close to this with the "Bowed" Synth. Perhaps I am doing something wrong.

I like the VG-99. I still need the synth sounds that are obtained from the GR products.

Can I obtain these sounds from an SC-55 ($100 on ebay)? or should I save up for a SD-50?

Why do you want a SD 50?

Seems redundant.

We know the GR-55 Internal sounds and DSP engine are already same as Roland SD 50 Mobile Studio Canvas

Explained here:

So would running a SD-50 with a VG-99 be similar to using a GR-55?

I meant either a SD-50 or GR-55 but then I guess I would need a US-20.

VG99?

You could download the violin patch as posted by rolandvg99:
https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=8886.0

That way you could avoid needing any external synth modules.

I used to be in a prog band with folk influences - several of our songs featured fiddles performed on my guitar synthesiser using wide variety of hardware over the years starting with a GR700 and ending with MainStage II.

Samples are a mixed blessing.  When setup correctly - with small pitch bend amounts of 2 semitones - and played carefully you can get excellent results.  However storm in with pitch bend amount set to 12 or 24 semitones and you will get some very odd sounds.  Some of the older Roland units had pitch-bend amounts set at the patch level - as far as I recall on modern units its a global parameter

I've posted on this in the past.  Check out

I think that in the context of a mix you will probably do better with something COSM or synth based unless you have carefully scored your part.

Just to add another sound source. Remember VG99 MIDI Out can drive an Ipad running an IOS Synth using the Apple CCK  an cheap USB to MIDI Cable.

I would invest in that before an SD50.

Don't get a studio canvas.  It's Roland lite in terms of sample quality in my opinion.  Look for a used Sonic Cell if anything.  Then get the World Music SRX expansion for some AMAZING banjo patches.
