I just saw Elantric's post about Software-Defined Radio, in this case a little radio dongle with a USB plug.

If you started watching, and got bored, I just want you to know that these can be a good way to capture music from the radio, not just HAM and fire depts.

I have a couple favorite radio shows that I don't want to miss, and I use a Griffin RadioSHARK to pipe radio into my old Mac. On the Mac, I run Audio Hijack Pro* or Audio Hijack** anyway, for other work, but it can also drive my Griffin RadioSHARK and let me set up timers for recording.

So every Thursday night, my old Mac records Dave Chamberlain's show Sagebrush Boogie, for example. I have a folder full of his shows, ready for listening any time. I live in ATL, so I also record shows from one of the nation's best college radio stations, too.

The point is, it's not just for folks who like obscure radio hobbies. It's a great way to record some radio show or broadcast that you can't listen to now, but you wish you could hear it again later when you've got time.

*Audio Hijack Pro works on mac OSes before High Sierra. It's very flexible, powerful, and it lets you modify the audio with your collection of VST and AU plugins. I like to filter, limit and EQ my radio recordings as they come in.

**Audio Hijack is the newer app. It works on newer OSes, but it's less flexible, fewer effects options, no access to your own collection of VST/AU plugins, and a truly ridiculous interface. But it does work, reliably!
