Hey guys, I'm looking to get a new 13-pin cable for my rig. Ten footer is fine, but I'd like:

- Better 'quality' than the Roland (it's just fine, but it just seems cheap).
- Right-angle out (I know, probably not available). When I play on the couch, the cable gets bent sharply on the couch, etc.

Any ideas now that Planet Waves no longer seems to be making these?

Thanks!

[bump!]

I'm looking for recommendations where to get a good price on ordinary 13-pin cables (not right-angled plugs). I'm down to my last good cable.

Check ebay.  For example, here's an ad for a Planet Waves cable: http://cgi.ebay.com/ROLAND-PLANET-WAVES-13-Pin-Guitar-Synth-Midi-Cable-BNIB_W0QQitemZ290353279790QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item439a67732e

Be vary of what you buy from eBay. The item listed above for example by a seller called ipodmp34capa is not a real Planet Waves cable. I know because I bought 2 and they turned out to be the lowest quality cables with 13pin plugs that did not have the locking button feature. They would not even fit in the GK3 unless forced. I returned them and got my money out but it took lot of writing. In short don't buy from ipodmp34capa and also read the item description very carefully. Good luck!!!

maxdaddy

this is a shame, because the guy is still selling these things and representing them in all of the following ways... "genuine Roland", "Planet Waves", "Planet Waves/D'Addario", or "Roland Planet Waves".

I REALLY need to get a spare cable, but nobody in Tampa keeps them in-stock. Has anybody found a reasonably-priced supplier of a quality cable?

thanks

QuoteI'm not using a Roland GKC 13 pin cable, but instead a cheap one off of ebay.  Is that the problem?

Sad to inform - that cheap ebay Gk 13 pin cable might have damaged your GR-20

It shorts the +7VDC rail (pin #12 ) to ground, and "poof" goes the Roland GR-20

Be advised 90% of the ebay sellers for 13 pin Roland cables are actually reselling old Kenwood Ham Radio / car stereo CD changer cables and these can damage your Roland / Boss gear big time!

Thanks Elantric, but I guess I don't consider $60 to be a reasonable price.   :-\   ... and the eBay-er is the guy that MCK warned us about in October, so I'm scared of that product.

I did find it listed at Sweetwater and at Gordon Lasalle for $40 with free shipping. I'll probably order one from them on Monday.

MCK

Yup. Very same guy. I eventually managed to get my money back but it was a journey... Do note the following in his item description :

"THE TITLE IS TO GET YOU TO LOOK AT THE ITEM. THERE MAY BE MODEL
NUMBERS IN THE TITLE THAT THE ITEM WORKS WITH, OR LIKE."

So essentially he will say I told you so if you complain that what you get is not Planet Waves original cable...

maxdaddy

I ordered one from Sweetwater for $40 and it is a real Roland product. A few days after I got the package, I won an eBay auction for another Roland cable that I had bid $1.26 on! So, looks like I'll have TWO spares soon. Hopefully the eBay cable is in decent working condition.

I'm glad we were able to learn from your experience with that seller who is selling the knockoff cables.

dave

MCK

Great going! I should order one from Sweetwater soon just to be on the safe side.

Buco

I managed to make one with connectors I got from ebay and cat5 cable. I couldn't think of or source out any cable with that many wires inside so I used a pair of cat5 cables.
It was a bit of a PITA but in the end it worked and it was much cheaper.
I guess not many out there will take time to DIY this but it is an option.

maxdaddy

brilliant!  Did you wrap the two cables inside a sheath or just zip-tie them together?

Paresh

i need a cable too. i am getting very loud "static" - is that what happens when they break down? I just want to be sure it is the cable and not some other componant. Is there a way to test it? Thanks.

I had some heat shrink around so I cut it in smaller pieces and shrunk it every few feet or so.
It works, I'm happy. If I could find a suitable cable I'd make a few more.  Maybe a VGA cable would work but by the time I pay for it and connectors I'll be in the new Roland cable ball park.
thanks

Try to see if someone on the forum is local to you and borrow their cable. Or take your guitar and cable to a shop that sells Roland stuff and test it there. That'll be much easier then trying to troubleshoot 13 wire cable.

Paresh

Thanks...I remembered I had an old cable to test that works except for 1 string. It was broken right out of the box. These things are fragile. I don't see any of the pins bent so I have no idea if it can be repaired.
paresh

Buco

If the jack can be taken apart you could fix it. If it's molded then probably not but then you have a cable and you can order jack from ebay for about $8 shipped and make a new one.

Just an update:

This Ebay seller has 17 foot ( 3meter) Roland GK13 pin cables, with interlock.

http://myworld.ebay.com/ipodmp34capa/

I ordered two, and they are factory Roland cables.

However not sure about his "right angle cables"

Just a word of caution, as they may be the Kenwood Car Stereo type.

Did you get the cables? Are they the interlock types you hoped to get? This is the bait & switch seller that I had a run in back in 2009. He shows Roland images and then send you cheap OEM cables with no interlock. Hope your mileage ends up being better than mine!

Elantric

Perhaps I got lucky, because I got what I ordered  and I received two cables that look exactly like the Roland 13 pin cables, with interlocks too.

Just found this on FleaBay. I have no experience with this seller, but the feedback is decent.  I may have to try a couple of these cables as my GR-55 arrives tomorrow.

I just received a 5 foot (for my US-20 to GR-55 connection) and a 20 foot (for my US-20 to VG-99 connection) from this seller ipodmp34capa on eBay.

Both cables work.

The 5 foot has locking connectors and the cable is the same thickness as Roland.  Its solid as a rock when connected.  Works great!

On the other hand, the 20 foot has a "Roland style" connector and makes noise because its not a perfectly tight fit in the socket.  i.e. any wiggling of the connector and you hear crackling and static.  The 20 foot cable is also half the thickness of a Roland cable.  I would advise against purchasing this 20 foot personally.

So baiscally I recommend this item "REAL ROLAND PLANET WAVES 13-Pin Synth Midi Cable 5 FT"

I don't recommend this one "20FT 13PIN MIDI CABLE ROLAND GR33 GR20 GR30 GR VG 20 33"
- Unfortunately he advertises that it's also a "20 ft planet waves cable" and you even see that in the picture, but he also states in the auction.  "Words in Red = THIS IS WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO GET IN THE MAIL".  If you search for the "words in red" then basically you will find that the item you will receive in the mail is a 13-PIN 20FOOT 605.2CM CABLE" nothing more nothing less.  This cable was clearly assembled by hand and poorly built.  The connector sleeves have been modified with a knife or some cutters to fit properly.   I had my expectations on a Real Planet waves Roland 13 pin cable......

Hope this info helps
