Title: GP-10 - Randy Bachman tones?
Post by: jtode on January 16, 2023, 11:12:14 AM
Hey all,

I'm joining a band and we're from Manitoba, which makes Guess Who and BTO songs an absolute necessity. I've had my GP-10 for ages but I'm literally just making my first serious attempt at programming it for stage use, up to now it's been a toy I plug in for guests and we laugh at the over-the-top factory patches for a few minutes. I learned the first couple chords of separate ways, that kinda thing.

Anyways, Randy Bachman has been a restless sound engineer basically right from the start - the first thing he became widely known for was the lead guitar tone on American Woman (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9uf6EY2BZBw), which he invented by running the output of one tube amp into the input of another. His tech wizard Gar (and mine, for a while - Winnipeg is a small place, and he made it rock right through the aughts) designed the now-legendary Garnet Herzog effect box to get the same effect without murdering his amps. So that's one song I'd like to get every sound dialed in for - The original recording includes a little acoustic bluesy thing before the main riff kicks in, and in the main tune both the rhythm and lead guitars have extremely characteristic sounds, but that heavily-sustained lead tone is crucial. So basically is there an easy way to dial in the sound of one tweed-era amp plugged straight into another?

Likewise, once he moved to BTO he acquired a penchant for really shiny and clean sounds, like the verses of You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4cia_v4vxfE), which alternate with a typical Big Dumb Rock overdrive on the chorus.

I'm gonna be experimenting myself, but if anyone's got anything remotely close to this stuff dialed in, or can suggest a factory patch as a good jumping off point, that would be awesome.

I did an American Woman lead patch for the VG-99 and I used existing patches for the rhythm and bass.  If you import those into Gumtown's Floorboard you could port them to the GP-10.  I bet it would sound very close to the record too.
