Title: A PACK OF 4 - IT'S WISHBONE ASH
Post by: billbax on April 10, 2011, 01:31:40 PM
Hi Everyone,

I don't just make Breakout Boxes in different colours, but also play the guitar...whaddaya think?

ENIGMA

ENIGMA. AUDIO ONLY (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IfAe1CNkixY#ws)

A Bill Bax version of a Wishbone Ash tune from the 2001 Bona-Fide album.  I actually worked on the album with Andy Powell and the boys.  The whole thing didn't quite turn out as planned, but ended up with a few audio off-cuts from the album.

My vision of Wishbone Ash is an uncompromising one, so with Andy's guitar and vocals, I had a chance to show a few things from my perspective.

Probably will get into a bit of hot water with AP for posting this, but heck, someone's got to hear me struggling on the guitar.  All guitars are Roland VG-88.

PRELUDE

PRELUDE. AUDIO ONLY (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWo_itqdrQg#ws)

Yet another Wishbone track recorded on my 'souped-up' Roland VS-1880 and mixed on Cubase SX3.

What's interesting about this track, is the new recording resolution afforded by swapping out the 1880's op-amps. The guaranteed THD on this track is 0.00568!

All guitars are Roland VG-88. Chord riffs are fender single coil patches. The solo is a  PAF with a MS1959 amp and cab.  In an A/B comparison with the original track, it makes you realise how far recording equipment has come, since those old days of analog recording. There's no fancy over-dub in this instrumental, just a plain and simple two guitars, bass and drums.

On a small but interesting note, Wishbone Ash used to play the opening minute or so, on their live shows, when taking to the stage.  I actually went to one of the shows and heard it.  My Wishbone Ash quartet sounds alright!

FAR AWAY

FAR AWAY. AUDIO ONLY (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5L4Taxpbb54#ws)

An original Bill Bax tune, but could easily have been a Wishbone Ash track.

Right now the time is 1978, a dark November night at the Hammersmith Odeon. and the classic Wishbone Ash band are in concert. Martin Turner is doin' his 'twangy' bass thing.  Andy Powell is studying his harmony and chord parts. Laurie Wisefield is letting-rip on a Les Paul, and Steve Upton the drum master's playing is full of venom...aah, It's all fantasy, life just isn't like this.

All VG-88 guitars, bass, and R8MKII played by H.R.H.

As I recall, the inspiration for this track came from several sources.  The intro, is a bit similar to the film 'She', the old Hammer House film from the 60's...very sad, romantic and miserable.  The rest is from the trials and misery of love.  Somebody kick the chair for Bill.

I suppose the star of the show is my backlit Roland R8 MKII drum machine. It's a 4/4 shuffle with time-stretch.  All guitar are VG-88.  Bass is a Fender Squier Precision.

Thanks for listening.

Welcome billbax!  Wishbone Ash-The Pilgrim in 7/4 time!  Chewing gum at the same time kinda thing to jamb with it.  Got the song riff but couldn't jamb along with it back then. Haven't tried since.

nice playing on yours:)

Bill, welcome to the group!  I was telling people here about you.  I was emailing with you a few years ago and you had sent me a copy of "Enigma" asking my opinion about the mix.  Your stuff is totally pro.  Good to have you here.  :)

Hi Audiotrax.

Yes, ofcourse I remember our lengthy email conversations.  I appreciated you comments and criticisms back then.  I think I subscribed to your youtube channel this week. http://www.youtube.com/user/audiotrax2000 (http://www.youtube.com/user/audiotrax2000). Nicely in-tune acoustic guitar on you opening movie and a good tone.

Thanks again for commenting on my stuff.

All the best,

Bill

Thanks Elantric and well spotted!  I saw it last night and even managed to watch it all the way through.  Andy Powell carries the Wishbone Ash flag very well, considering the bands former glory.

My only criticism of the band in all it's incarnations, I wish they sounded darker, medieval and less bluesy.  People globally tuned into the band because of the oldie English rock/folk feel, not some music culture mash-up.

Good to see the band in a healthy state.

Thanks,

Bill
