Apologies if this is an FAQ.  I've been digging around all evening and haven't found an answer.

I would like to use MIDI out from my Jam Origin MIDI Guitar 2 to drive my VG-99.  I've tried just about everything and I cannot get it to work.   Is it possible to use MIDI guitar input to the VG-99 without using a GK cable/protocol?

No, It won't work,
as the VG-99 Harmonic Restructured Modelling (HRM) synth engine is not a midi driven synth like PCM rom based synths,
it uses the analog string signal as the oscillator.
The VG-99 will ignore midi note data.

Thank you for clarifying!  I'll have to stick with my frankenstein axe for the VG-99 then.  I'm not keen on drilling holes for the GK mount in my Parker Fly.

Just an FYI, what you suggested will work with the GR-30, GR-33 & GR-20.
