Hello VGuitar friends,
I've posted live videos of "Los Playboys" before, but this is the first one of a jam we did in my studio in July. The unusual aspect of our band is that we do not rehearse or play standards - everything we do is completely improvised on the spot. It requires players that are good at listening and going with the flow. If you like this, we have a crapload more of it on my soundcloud with the tag "losplayboys" at www.soundcloud.com/roysmith

From a technical perspective, the rig I'm using is a Parker Fly Mojo with a GK-3 pickup.  Although the Parker has great onboard electronics, for this band I do not use any of that - all the guitar sounds I use come from the GR-55.

Because I want to have a large number of tones instantly available as the whim strikes me, I use an Akai MPD 26 MIDI controller to quickly access up to 64 GR-55 patches just by pressing one of the 16 pads on the MIDI controller. I've also mapped several global functions to sliders on the Akai controller - reverb being the one I use most.

From the GR-55, the stereo signal goes into a Strymon Timeline delay, which is an extremely comprehensive delay unit. I use the second Akai MPD to control the presets on the Strymon as well as useful settings like delay time, repeats, "dirt", modulation on the Strymon.

Enjoy!
Roy

Very cool - really like the sounds you're getting out of the GR55. Being in a cover band, I really appreciate the improvs as I think it is a true mark of musicianship. In fact, the improv warmups are what I enjoy most about rehearsals.

For anyone that enjoyed these Los Playboys videos, I just posted a playlist of improv performances from my latest band, called Groovatine.  Lots of good GR-55 patches in use here. Enjoy!
