It took a lot of searching for it , but the most complete VG-99 MIDI Implementation document  (77 pages) I found is here, however its in Japanese! ):
http://tinyurl.com/62y5ey

Its posted only on the Roland Japanese site.(and RolandUS still insists this document does not exist)
http://www.roland.co.jp/support/article/?q=manuals&p=VG%2D99
A copy is attached below::
(VG-99_IMPL_j1.pdf)

*** There is a preliminary English translation Text file also attached below.( VG-99_MIDI_IMPLEMENTATION_1.00.txt)
http://lib.roland.co.jp/support/en/manuals/res/63185573/VG-99_MIDI_Imple_e01.pdf

Its better than nothing, and remember after the first 7 pages, it describes  hex NRPN MIDI commands with English parameters - so its still a very usable document for making VG-99 remote control mapping templates in third party software  /controllers.

Suggest download both documents:

Refer to the nice formatted Japanese VG-99 MIDI Implementation document for data array structure, and refer to the text only English document for meaning.

Thanks for posting this, though I don't know if I understand it.  I would just like to know what CC to use to turn on & off effects in the chain & amp solo.  Will see if I can find them in here.

I've tried on and off to learn Japanese - my friend Matt is a lot better at the kanji than I am although when I hear it spoken I'm reasonable to a point.

If they can't provide us with a US English rendition we'll have to use this one - it's great that I can pull this up and look at it.

Why wasn't this part of the user manual?  Seems like a no brainer to me.  I suppose they think we'll brick the unit if we send the wrong command.

The other thing that's interesting is it seems Roland is super inconsistent with what products have a publicly viewable midi spec and some do not.  I looked at Roland's US website and some get it, some don't.  Why?

QuoteI would just like to know what CC to use to turn on & off effects in the chain & amp solo.

Thats simple - create a user Control Assignment - the steps are detailed in the  VG-99 Owners manual.

QuoteWhy wasn't this part of the user manual?

Its 77 pages long and they figure not everyone needs it, so why kill more trees?

But those folks who want to exploit all the control possibilities of the VG-99, here is the info you need.

Many remote control surfaces and IOS MIDI control apps can send NRPN MIDI data strings, and the road map of what messages control what are all described and defined here.

5 years after the VG-99 product release, seems whacky this doc is posted only on the Roland Japanese site.

When Seeking any arcane document for a Roland product, begin at the source - the Roland Japan web site.

Next search on the Roland Global portal

More trivia ,
Roland product Owner's Manuals are translated from Japanese into English by a multilingual Dutch staff at  Roland Netherlands
This might explain why english Roland Manuals are so tough to comprehend.

Since the GR-55 is half VG-99, one has to wonder if any of this midi implementation is translatable to the GR-55.

Is this file available anywhere else?  The link 404s and going over the docs for the VG-99 on their site I don't see it (looked in both support docs and owner's manuals).
Still stuck in the 1980s.  My mame cabinet, mini home studio, and 8 bit game room:
