Title: Mustang GT - improve the Fender Mustang GT 200 Amp /CAB modeling sounds
Post by: Elantric on May 31, 2017, 11:27:19 AM
How to tame  / improve the Fender Mustang GT 200 Amp   /CAB modeling sounds

Step 1  - Disable the internal Mustang GT 200 Cab Modeling

Step 2  - Insert the Digitech Cabdry VR in the Mustang GT 200 stereo FX loop and set the CabDryVR controls to taste

QuoteThe hubbub around the GT amps has kind of died down. Anyone know if they have a decent functioning PC editor available for them yet? (GT 100 in particular).

Hasn't died down for me, i just don't want to waste any more time and effort countering all the negative BS. So i won't post but to answer serious questions or post settings or clips if i ever get around to that. As to an editor, the rep i was dealing with for a few weeks told me they are looking at doing that. Not sure if it will be a separate app from the tone app or the tone app made to work on PC. But whatever it will be he suggested it will probably allow preset saving/backups. They also told another member at the fender forum that they are hoping to release the next firmware update by tomorrow of early next week. The new save functions (to be able to save the same way as the old mustang) is supposed to be in it and other things that weren't mentioned but i have my fingers crossed for a few things. I think it'll be big because it took 5 weeks vs 10 days between the last 2 updates. So i have high hopes for a couple things i want to see.

I hope you see enough things change for you to jump on it as you suggested because i'll tell you this....once that speaker breaks in which is ULTRA important for tube amp feel, and once you learn it well to where you can get the best from a model quickly, you're gonna see that what I've said is true....it's a lot better then the old mustang. It's crazy better, but it just isn't apparent till you get past those 2 things and also IMO set the sag to minimum (or dynamics get squashed) and use the 412GB cab. You may like some other cabs but that one really allows you to hear what each model can do w/o it being stifled by any of the other cabs which really add thier own coloring, mostly to huge degrees and don't let the model's inherent character to come thru or covers it up.

An actual Tube Amp is often the wrong tool in most live performance situations today.

Decades ago, I recall playing many showcase gigs in small LA clubs with a "too loud" tube amp!.
For my best singing tone on a vintage tube amp I would have to crank up the amp Volume up loud to experience tube power amp saturation, but it would blow out the small room and get nothing but complaints: "turn it down!"

My point is often when A/B testing today's DSP Amp Modelers with the real deal tube amp, its easy to assess - "This DSP Amp Modeler/ Profiler sounds distant, lacks the immediate punch of a genuine tube amp" -

Yes I know, Ive A/B compared them and I agree!

But I find the DSP Amp Modelers when set correctly with the right choice cab sim that suits and works with the current performance room's resonant frequency can deliver a more enjoyable playing experience and more polished tone, and less ear bleeds and less complaints of "thats too loud" from the crowd.
Yes the DSP Amp Modeler does NOT sound 100% exactly like a genuine Tube amp, and often thats a very Good thing!

Ive been able to play more with my Stereo Mustang GT 200 on latest FW 3.0.31  - and I like what I hear.
Spinning through the 189 Factory presets there's a wide variety of available tones and like most DSP Modeling processors, it's basic underlying "live Amp sound" when set correctly using the right choice of internal Cab Sim model for the room is best described as sounding closer to the sound you hear on a well  produced and processed guitar track on a record. In many situations that can work much better than an actual raw cranked 50 watt Plexi Marshall or Vox AC15 Top Boost or Cranked '64 Fender Deluxe Reverb Amp at small club gigs - those would get you fired in majority of live playing situations today!

If you analyze the actual complete signal chain of your favorite recorded guitar tracks, often its a Tube Amp, into a Guitar speaker cab, with one or several well placed mics, into a high dynamic range tube mic preamp into a Teletronix LA-2A Photocell compressor, into TC 2290 delays lines, and plate reverb on 2 tracks for the final mix.

and that signal chain removes the harsh in your face immediacy you hear standing 5 feet away from a genuine tube amp.

The Mustang GT 200 on Firmware 3.0  gets closer to the recording studio sound out of the box  without all that external gear.

Only caveat of when a Mustang GT amp may not work is you are the 2nd guitarist with another guitar player uses a typical genuine tube amp  - then the Mustang GT may get lost in the mix

Where the Mustang GT 200 shines is when you're the only guitar player or practicing at home to backing tracks or youtube audio streamed in using its built in stereo Bluetooth audio capabilities.
I get that more controlled Studio Lush Guitar sound quite easily, and I can dial it down to lower volumes and still get singing sustain that are tough with other amps.

With any amp, At moderate volume, the acoustic resonance of the actual room I'm currently playing plays the largest role in the final sound.

Each Mustang GT 200 patch, due to the choice of Speaker cab sim model employed on that patch has a specific resonant frequency Peak and some patches that may work fine and sound perfect in one room,  may sound weak and lifeless or too dull when using same patch in a different size room.

So first thing I do is for the current patch, go to the Mustang GT Speaker Cab sim type and spin it until I find an alternate model that has a little better tone cab resonance which suits the room, then hit '"Write". With 200 patch locations and I can store room corrected versions of my favorite 20 patches for the top 10 venues i perform. ( this was an old AXE-FX trick)

With the current Mustang GT  3.0  firmware,  all the Amp Models and Cab Sim Models are far more usable!.
I'm not upset that Mustang GT lacks third party Cab IR Loading and entering that tweakfest rabbit hole - I find usable sound in seconds using the built in Cab Sim options and can edit all effects right on the amp, and the built in tuner works very well

The Mustang GT 200 has many true stereo effects built in, and an analog Stereo FX Loop right before the Stereo Class D power amp, I can insert external stereo effects processor or run a "4 or 5 cable method' using a Line 6 HX effects, or Nux Cerberus  or MS-5  - Mustang GT 200  does provide very good flexibility  - But these are not needed as the firmware 3.0 improved all the internal effects.
