Hi There, new to this unit and Boss Tone Studio so sorry if this is easy.

I'd like to control the guitar direct level with an expression pedal no matter which patch is selected, so I did the following:
  • Connected a Boss EV30 to the EXP/CTL 4,5 jack
  • Went to the EXP section in Tone Studio
  • Set CTL mode to System and assigned it to ON
  • Chose PATCH COM and a traget of DIRECT LEVEL
  • Clicked WRITE to save it to the unit
I couldn't insert a dropbox image so here's a link:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/c62gy7y521h747n/global-direct-level-expression-pedal.png?dl=0

But I can't get it working so am obviously missing something basic sorry.

Any pointers in the right direction would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Ben

Control Assignments have existed since the 1995 Boss GT-5, and how to create one is the same procedure as used in GT-5, GT-3, GT-6, GT-8, GT-10, GT-100, GT-Pro,  VG-88, VG-99, GR-55 , GP-10

OK, so now I'm totally confused, you've given me literally 100s (if not 1000) pages to review for devices I don't have - is it not very simple to do?

Or is it not explained in the SY-300 manuals?

I might be wrong here but , I don't think patch com is the right target.
I think you should try output mixer and return level

If that's the case the thru/return mixer has to be set to direct 100 and return zero

A q
Do you want to control the volume of the clean guitar and output that mixed with synth through main out ?

Thanks heaps for the replies, much appreciated.

My only experience with a guitar synth is with the GR-300 which I still have.

While it's glorious, it's a one or two trick pony and I got the best use out of it by blending it with the guitar signal so it doesn't sound like a synth, it sounds like an awesome guitar if that makes sense.

So that's how I'm using the SY-300, like a guitar pedal at the start of my pedal board. It's running into effect pedals and to the amp like any other pedal - I don't like the sound of guitar synths by themselves!

So, upon using with the SY-300, the first thing I missed was the blend knob on the GR-300 guitar and thought the best way to achieve this would be with an expression pedal to blend the synth signal with the guitar.

I tried OUTPUT MIXER–>RETURN LEVEL but that didn't do anything - I'm also not using the send/return so assume that's why.

I started with PATCH COM–>DIRECT LEVEL because that's what is assigned to the QUICK PAGE Knob 3.

I'm wondering if it's the pedal because I can see the EXP setup has been saved to the unit under CTL/EXP but when I move the pedal, the parameters don't change - it's a brand new EV30.

Anyway, I'm obviously missing something basic so will keep working on it.

Cheers

Output mixer return level won't do anything if the thru/return mixer isn't set to direct full and return zero

Output mixer balance should work if you want to blend
But the same as above applies to thru/return mixer

Yes, BALANCE sounds perfect.

But after assigning it, it doesn't do anything so I'm wondering if the EV30 is compatible with the SY-300 - the manual states 'Use only the specified expression pedal (Roland EV-5)'

Does anyone know if the BOSS EV30 is compatible?

Sorry don't know about the EV30.

About the return , Boss for some reason has named it return when it's actually a dual input in mono. One from main in ( direct level ) and one from fx loop return ( return ) both can be used simultaneously ( in theory by two instruments ) and the thru/return mixer sets the balance etc.

Set the ev30 to patch level and try if it works , then you'd know if it's compatible

I literally have no idea what that means so have been trying to look it up and work it out!

the input (direct ) the thru ( normally fx send ) and return (normally fx return )
are somewhat confusing since they can be used in quite a few ways.

(and IMO named funny , you can use input to OSC  / and as direct and thru , the return as a separate input to internal FX or not etc)

Thanks guys, I know it's frustrating but I'm totally lost sorry, even after the diagrams.

To clarify, I'm trying to make it so that when the Expression pedal is fully forward, I hear full synth and when fully back, I hear full guitar.

@Brak(E)man 'Set the ev30 to patch level'
I don't understand what that means sorry, it seems like the first thing to try before going any further - right?

the return level in output mixer controls what comes out of thru/return mixer
make sure the direct level is up or you wont hear any guitar since you don't have anything plugged into return

and if you're having BTS open you should see if the EV30 is affecting the parameter chosen

Try this:

I think source needs to be set as momentary but if it doesn't work; try toggle as well. As far as VGF goes; it's a great forum but sometimes overwhelming when coming in as new person as all this is fairly technical in nature and, as such; possibly headache inducing  >:( ;D

To see if the EV30 works at all with SY300 , then set it to a parameter that would work regardless of any other issues.
Synth level in output mixer would be one place to check it.

This is correct but the thru/return mixer have to be set right or the guitar won't be heard , the synth might swell up and down though  :)

This is a very important point. I have an EV5 and it obviously works as it should. Not sure if the EV30 is compatible or not.

Thanks heaps guys, got it working.

1.
First time using an expression pedal, so no you can't use a guitar patch cable! Swapped for a TRS cable and now the EV30 works with the SY-300.

2.
JiveTurkey's setup works perfectly for my needs - thank you.

Thanks for all the help, very much appreciated.
