Hey guys, check out the interview we did with Mr. Yoshi Ikegami last week and their product manager Jeff Slingluff. My show is called EVH Gear Discussion and we had Boss on to discuss the WAZA and Katana amps and specifically the brown sound tone capsule which is aimed at nailing that classic VH tone.

I agree with this statement
QuoteThey didn't give opinions. I, however, do have some:
Vox-
Bad clean tone, hurt my ears. Crunch and high gain were passable.
Marshall-
Horid all around.. Even worse clean, congested crunch sound, high gain strait from the toilet. Easily the worst of the bunch.
Fender-
Nice cleans, as expected. Good crunch tones, and surprisingly good high gain. Impressed.
Katana-
Great tube-amp like clean and crunch tones. Liked the high gain better with humbuckers. Very nice.
Blackstar-
Both sounded very similar to me. Good at everything, gain sounds better than the cleans. Like them.
Spider V-
Pretty good clean tones, crunch was decent. High gain is not my favorite. Has that same line 6 character I've disliked for years. Good effort, but not quite there.
My ranking, from best to worst:
1. Katana
2. Fender
3. Blackstar
4. Spider V
5. Vox
6. Marshall Code

Just saw these - thanks for posting! Very valuable quick survey of the Katana effects palette. I have only one small criticism. Limiting the amp demo to the four factory presets leaves out a slew of great tones. Those four may be great for some folks, but none are my style. Might be a good idea to post an amp demo Part II with acoustic, clean and crunch.

For those of you not members of the Facebook Group, below are 2 pics of a prototype Boss Katana 2x12 cab for the Katana series.
Weight: around 50 pounds (22,7 kg)
Dimensions: H L W 20 in x 26 in x 12 in (500 mm x 670 mm x 300 mm)
Speakers: are same as the one in the Katana 100 2x12, MSRP is planned to be around 400 $us.
Removable back plate (8 screws), transforms into an open back cab.
Release date: Boss is hoping for Fall 2017
It sounds great! Doesn't make my Katana Head sound too "trebley" and adds some darknest.
Loving it so far, just not enough spare time lately...
I really like the look of the Katana 2x12 cab when it's set up at the vertical (makes an awesome Mini Stack). I even asked Boss if they could add some rubber feet and moving the logo in the middle with a pivot so you could flip the logo depending on the position you set your cab. They told me it was a great idea and would look into it.
Video overview to come very soon and play through to follow... Stay tuned!
A follow up to my post above. Here is a quick video overview of the 2x12 cabinet and very quick jingle done with the cab, all done on the crunch channel. I'll have more to come as soon as I get the time. Cheers!

My first gig with the Katana (unfortunately the video camera was confused by the lighting but you get the idea). Couple of songs Can't Explain The Who and All Right Now Free. The amp really cuts through well and I only got it on about half volume on 50w mode before it was too loud !

When I started recording one of my new video, I had no idea I would turn it into a quiz. ;D
I think Boss did a decent job with the new cab sim in the v2 firmware.
While working on the montage of my other video, at one point, I got confused with my audio tracks and it made me wonder which were the one done direct or recorded with mics... ??? ::)
I ended to be able to sort them out but that was a good reason to see how the members here would pick them apart.
The other video should be available in a few days, I'm still going through the montage at the moment. I will give the answer at the same time.

Thanks! The guitar is an old model built by Rocketfire guitars., strung with 10-42 Check them out, their pickups and build are awesome.
I've used the {Katana} crunch channel with gain around 10 O'Clock and volume around noon. Spring reverb
and (@ 1:33 min) Blues Drive boost a bit above half way.
On the EQ side, i left the highs at about 8 O'Clock (very low) and presence at zero.
I used the 100W config with low volume (around 2),
Recorded with one (Beyerdynamic opus 39 ) dynamic mic in the center of the speaker and one (Sennheiser e609) Ribbon mic in the back of the amp. into Scarlet 2nd gen too. This config was intended to remove a bit of the fizzy highs you'll probably find when mic-ing this amp. Cheers!
With the 1x12 I have not experienced muddiness, but for recording you can feel some fizzy highs that are a bit annoying and had to be corrected with EQ. Nevertheless, the Katana is a great amp for its intended purpose (practical, relatively cheap and with some good tones) Thanks again for listening..

Ignoring for a moment the fact that the Peavey was louder on every A/B test, this is a great demonstration of the Katana's superior dynamic range and modeling quality. We're all entitled to our own opinions, but to my ears the Vypryr exhibits the same horrid can-o-bees overtones that led me to throw my VIP2 back in the box two days after it arrived. The Katana sounds properly organic and fails to scream "solid-state!" with every note.

Maybe it's just me, but both sounded a bit ragged with an "artificial" edge. Also, FWIW, the GE200 was EQ'd a bit darker.
