Recently I heard from Sevilla Soft about their MIDI USB-USB connector; you might have seen my little post about it on here. Anyway, they kindly sent one over for me to try. I find gadgets like this endlessly fascinating – you can never have too many connectors in your gig bag/toolbox.

Unless you're a Spanish speaker, you might find it hard to glean adequate info about what exactly this is, so here we go. The purpose of the MIDI USB-USB is to connect two USB MIDI host devices – that's two USB devices that use USB 'A' connections – to send MIDI. Let's say you want to send MIDI between two computers, tablets, or the like, and you don't want or need the complexities of using full-on interfaces.

This is a very compact device, as you can see from the photos here. It's basically the size of a typical USB memory stick. Other than the MIDI USB-USB itself, the box includes 1x 35cm and 1×1.8m USB extension cables, so it's ready to go. READ ON FOR THE FULL REVIEW...

This is a class-compliant device, so no drivers are required. It's also fully cross platform so you can use it with OS X, Windows, Linux, iOS, and Android.

When you launch Live and look at the MIDI USB-USB in Preferences, you'll see that it appears as FOUR sets of inputs and outputs! This gives you plenty of routing options, and also means that you can access it from different applications simultaneously. Very nice, very neat.

I used to sync Live on two different Macs, to sync Live and Logic on two Macs, and it worked fine, no issue at all. I also used it with the Apple Camera Connection Kit to send sync from Live to the Korg Gadget app on an iPad Pro, and again it worked perfectly, the connection seemed stable and fast.

What I really got a kick out of was that you don't even have to use the cables – see the photo below. The ultimate minimal hardware sync setup!

The MIDI USB-USB is a very compact alternative to fudging together a setup with more 'traditional' hardware. Maybe it'll be something you use every day, or maybe it'll just get you out of a hole some time, but this is something everybody should have.

The MIDI USB-USB costs just €39 and is available here.

Producent: Sevilla Soft
Cena: 39 EUR (ok. 170 zł)

Useful box: MIDI USB-USB
The small Spanish company Sevilla Soft offers a device for connecting two MIDI hosts to USB. Without the need to install any drivers, we can connect two computers, two tablets, and a tablet to your computer. It is easy, straightforward and most importantly sure enough. 2016-04-12 11.24.24

Someone may say that apps on iOS, or even those few on Android, can be integrated using a wireless network. That is true, but at the risk of transmission delay or even break, you can not afford. Especially when you are on stage.

As you know, we'll connect the synthesizer or USB keyboard to the computer without problems. Worse, when you need to connect your tablet to a computer or tablet that is not such a MIDI device. This may be supported by familiar hardware solutions such as iConnect MIDI2 + and 4+, which do not belong to the cheapest. They are also quite large.

The MIDI USB-USB looks like a large, high-capacity flash drive enclosed in a 3D printer. However, The device complies with the MIDI Class Compliant specification, which means it works on the "insert and operate" principle on every operating system: Windows, OS X, Linux, iOS, Android. USB-USB can simultaneously connect two devices that are MIDI hosts. The scenarios for using this equipment are many. The most obvious is the tablet-computer or computer-to-computer communication, for example, to synchronize their clocks.
While working, we have 4 bidirectional MIDI ports, giving you 64 data exchange channels available for your application. The main advantage is the ease of operation. Simply connect your tablet to your computer, select "Sevilla Soft" as your MIDI device and you can use your tablet, for example, as a touch pad mixer or virtual encoder set in any program. Thanks to the cable connection, we are confident that no transmission delays will occur, such as when working with wireless TouchOSC solutions.

An adapter like MIDI USB-USB should be in the bag or drawer because sooner or later it will definitely be useful. In addition to the "dongla" we receive two 1.8 m and 35 cm USB extension cords. The manufacturer also offers a MIDI USB / MIDI 5 DIN host for a price of about 280 zł, which can handle up to 8 connected devices. It is also possible to combine and filter connected devices.

Manufacturer: Sevilla Soft
Price: 39 EUR (about 170 PLN)

UHMR is an interface that allows us to interconnect MIDI USB class compliant and MIDI DIN devices without the need to use a computer as a bridge between them. It consists of a USB type B connection for powering or programming the device, eight LED indicators for USB connections, two LEDs for MIDI input and output, two pushbuttons for various functions, a switch for programming, a USB HOST input and a MIDI DIN input and output.

The USB HOST input supports a USB HUB (or two cascade) where you can connect up to eight USB class compliant devices (controllers, keyboards, sound modules, MIDI interfaces, etc ...) and communicate them with each other or with the input and output. In case of need, if we do not have a computer at any given time, the system can be configured with the two pushbuttons and LED indicators following the instructions in the manual. Although it is much easy and more intuitive to program it with the application UHMRconfig for Windows and Mac Os X that you can download from the web www.sevillasoft.com. Our interface has a switch that in normal operating state is in the RUN position, if we move it to the PROG position the USB connector type B becomes a USB HID device where it will communicate with the UHMRconfig application. UHMRconfig presents an array with the devices that we have been connecting to the UHMR, each input can be routed to each of the outputs including the input and output MIDI DIN. UHMRconfig will also allow us to update the firmware of the device.
