"I wrote up what I've been learning over the last few months.  I've spent a lot of time in MidiOX trying to figure out exactly how the FTP works, and what it xmits to your synthesizer.  This doc assumes you want all of the additional functionality provided by Mono Mode.

Big lesson #1 is what I call Pedal Mode...   I was quite happy when I stumbled across that.

Big lesson #2 is what I call Program Change Mode.  Very helpful for playing with hardware synths.

Big lesson #3 is that I figured out why pitch bend ranges always work just fine...

Major caveat - I've made a lot of conclusions & assumptions...  So some of this may be wrong.  I'm always open to corrections, comments.  Feedback is welcome.  If needed, I'll correct & update this.

Hope this helps,

Shawn

FTP Controller  / Receiver "Pairing"
The early FTP docs were vague regarding the actual location of the FTP Controller pairing button.

The first day I never realized the round LED on the FTP Controller (the Red LED on the Right in pic below)  IS the Paring button. With the FTP DC charger removed, I kept trying to press the small round thing in the middle (see pic below) in error!

TriplePlay GUI reports: (July 24, 2013)

Software Version: (OSX) 1.1.3111 , (Win7) 1.1.3111
Receiver Version: 1.76
Controller Version: 2.07

Can be booted bit 64 bit Mode on OSX.

The current FTP Dpad control assignment is here

Controller is now at Version 2.07- hopefully Fishman will soon have docs to explain how hardware mode works soon.

July 18, 2013
QuoteAndover, MA––Fishman is pleased to announce a comprehensive new software update for its revolutionary TriplePlay® wireless guitar controller.

The new TriplePlay v1.1 software contains over 50 new improvements, features and updates as part of Fishman's ongoing commitment to evolve the user experience, value and performance of this groundbreaking technology.

With software update v1.1, TriplePlay is now 64-bit compatible on both Mac® and Windows® platforms and provides improved support with Windows 8.

A new Basic Enhanced Mode allows iPad GarageBand users to easily activate Pitch Bend. Factory patches now can use Komplete sounds directly instead of requiring Elements®.

The new Import/Export feature allows the transfer of patches from one TriplePlay installation computer to another. Improved hardware support allows the entire patch list to be loaded into the controller for use in the Hardware Mode. The
TriplePlay software also now lets users know when new software releases are available.

Other features include improved Encoder/Receiver communications to ensure greater connection stability; new Plug-in support to improve scan time and accuracy; new Windows support to improve overall performance, and new support to enhance TriplePlay's robustness in popular DAWs such as Cubase and Ableton Live 9.

Two new TriplePlay mixer audio options allow the Guitar Channel Level to be adjusted independently of Synth Channels and also allow the final Output Volume to be controlled by assigning CC80 to an external MIDI pedal.

* FTP Hardware Reset and Force a reload of the FTP firmware Guide.
https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=8491.0

For the best installation of the Fishman Tripleplay Pickup - same rules apply as mounting a Roland GK-3 pickup.

* Mount the FTP PU as close to the bridge as possible
* Adjust the FTP PU height so the fretted strings at your highest fret clears the FTP PU by 1 milimeter.
* Set your FTP String sensitivity to the correct range  - see links to all FTP docs below.

QuoteHey guys, just spoke with Fishman customer support.  The FTP executable will not run under XP.  They do not have a patch for XP, and they said they didn't know if in the future it will be made backwards compatible or not. OH well.  TO upgrade OS or not to upgrade?  May just send it back....

https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=33210.0

Several folks interested in the TriplePlay miss this important point regarding the included software bundle.
To use the included NI GuitarRig or IK Multimedia Amplitube app to process your normal guitar tone -you must use a separate third party low latency audio interface with either ASIO Drivers (Windows) or Core Audio Driver support (Mac).
(see here for a list of these)
https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=8291.0

Then its important to possess skills in setting up a real time performance DAW in 2013.

if you still need "Home Recording Setup 101 school" - to learn basic concepts like:
* If using the guitar Amp Sims (GuitarRig, Amplitube) Avoid trying to use your existing built in internal audio jacks on your computer.
* Its best to use the separate audio interface for ALL Audio I/O.

The TriplePlay hardwire consists of three parts: the controller, the pickup, and the receiver.

Uploaded at Snapagogo.com

A. Volume knob. Controls the TriplePlay mixer's Master fader, setting the overall volume for your virtual instruments and guitar sounds.
B. Guitar/Synth Selector switch. In the middle Mix position, you hear both the Guitar channel and any active Synths channels. With Guitar selected, all synth channels are muted, and you hear only the Guitar channel. With Synth selected, the Guitar channel is muted, and you hear only the virtual instruments on the synth channels.
C. D-Pad control. A set of four momentary buttons for navigating TriplePlay's Guitar Setup menu and scrolling between patches.
D. Controller LED button/status light. Both a pushbutton and an indicator light. Verifies battery power and the connection between your controller and receiver. When you power up the controller, the LED flashes once per second. Pressing both this button and the receiver's LED button/status light links the two components, at which point the controller's LED flashes once every five seconds. Pressing the button again temporarily breaks the link, and the LED resumes flashing at its faster rate.
E. Charge indicator LED. Glows green while the controller is being charged. The light goes out when the controller is fully charged.
F. Power switch. Turns the controller on and off. (If you forget to turn off the controller, it automatically powers down after 30 minutes of inactivity. To power it up again, turn the switch off and then on again.)
G. USB power jack. Attach the included USB A to Micro USB B cable to charge the controller via the included adapter or most computer USB ports. (20HRS TYPICAL BATTERY LIFE)
H. Receiver LED button/status light. Both a pushbutton and an indicator light. When the receiver is first connected to one of your computer's USB ports, its LED flashes several times per second, which indicates that it's searching for a controller. Pressing both this button and the controller's LED button/status light links the two components, at which point the LED glows continuously. Pressing this button again temporarily breaks the link, and the LED resumes flashing at its faster rate.

QuoteGreat info, any update on the expected latency?

Its all a direct function of the buffer setting and audio driver for your specific third party sound card (not included with Triple play).

More reference material on typical computer latency is here:

https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=5188.msg54931#msg54931

https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=5188.msg55407#msg55407
Andras Szalay said:
"The latency -- as it can be described best in the usual manner, from the picking until the MIDI signal, considering a "best case" for a given pitch on the guitar -- is about 14 msec at the lowest pitch of the guitar, and goes down to about 6 msec in the high range, so the specification is almost exactly the same as the AXON. No wonder, this is determined by the laws of physics. Of course, for an audible result you have to add whatever latency your computer / soft synth / audio interface generates. The big difference from the AXON is the statistical probability of "best case". While the AXON tracks well with clean playing, the FTP is more tolerant even with sloppy pickings in fast riffs, so the "average case" is much closer to "best case" as in the AXON. The reason for the difference is simple: I started to develop the AXON in 1992, 21 years ago; I used the most advanced technology that was available for commercially acceptable price. That was exploited to maximum to reach the state where the AXON is, more complex processing for dirty signals was out of question. Now I use several order of magnitude higher processing power (for the fraction of the cost), this allows to take care for much more details in the signals."

Quote+ Computer latency , which we know adds another 15 ms =

"You must have a really bad setup if your computer adds 15 msec latency! I have a MacBook Air (not a fast machine!) with Windows 7 and [using the internal Apple Audio feeding the MacBook Air headphone jack] I measured a latency between 3.7 to 5.0 msec from MIDI to the audio signal, using ASIO4ALL at 96 kHz and Luxonix Purity. With MAC OSX you get even less than that, once I measured it but I do not have the exact numbers."

http://luxonix.com/home/en/purity.html

Regarding TriplePlay Latency - for best results query the available buffer settings in your current DAW setup and sound card.

For a reference, these are the available options with a 2011 iMac 27" with Intel I7 and the stock Apple internal Audio.
And yes a buffer setting of 128  = Latency of 2.9milliseconds.
Below see that a buffer setting of 256 = 5.8 milliseconds.

The lowest setting of 16  = 0.4 milliseconds - but will probably deliver occasional pop and noise

I should add that the major aspect of the Fishman Tripleplay is the included VSTi Host app that supports midi mono mode for all the VSti's that get loaded.
The included software suite with FTP is more powerful than it first appears

There are a few Typos on the Fishman TriplePlay spec sheet - I will update

I can confirm these are the software titles included in the FTP Bundle.

IK MultiMedia SampleTank XT2,  AmpliTube Custom Shop, T-Rax Mastering Custom Shop,

NI Komplete Elements 8 and GuitarRig LE
http://www.native-instruments.com/en/products/komplete/bundles/komplete-8-elements/

Notion Music Progression

Presonus Studio One 2.5 Artist (Custom Fishman version that supports running 6 VSTi's for MIDI Mono mode)

and

QuoteI was just curious does the wireless part of the system introduce any additional latency that wasn't in the axon, that may account for the perceived difference?

"Of course, the radio transmission has a latency of its own, but this is only 0.5 msec; this is included in the numbers what I submitted."

and

Quote1. Is there two-way communication between the USB Dongle and the Triple Play?
Yes.

Quote2. The AXON transmitted MIDI data containing information of where the string was picked (how far from the bridge saddle). Does the Triple Play send this information as well?
No.

Quote3. Elantric noted the latency is worse when playing more than one note at the same time. Is this true?
No.

Quote4. Does the unit transmit Continuous Control messages for the current relative decibel level of the string?
No.

Quote5. Can the Triple Play send MIDI notes to a single MIDI channel?
Yes, it can work either in MONO mode or POLY mode.

QuoteIf so, does it support Polyphonic Pitchbend messages?
Yes.

QuotePolyphonic Aftertouch?
No.

QuoteAt the moment the TP software only supports VST2 plugins, not VST3, so that might be why it is not showing up. But I have never heard of anyone supporting VST3 but not VST2 before, so it could be a typo, maybe check with them. If it is true then tell Fishman you would like either AU or VST3.5 support, if enough people ask...

The Tripleplay does work with iPads (will test with Android soon)

The Tripleplay does work with older 5 pin MIDI Synths / Tone modules without a computer provided you use one of the available third party hardware
"USB Host to MIDI" conversion boxes

Like the iConnectMIDI hardware box

http://iconnectivity.com/iConnectMIDI-Overview

And this Kenton UK unit work too.

http://www.kentonuk.com/products/items/utilities/usb-host.shtml
Kenton MIDI USB Host
USB Host to MIDI converter for 'Class Compliant' USB MIDI Devices

Your USB device is plugged into the USB MIDI Host instead of into a computer. It provides MIDI In & Out sockets for USB MIDI keyboards and controllers which have only a USB B type socket. For example, used with a USB-Solo, it allows the USB-Solo to be used in a standard MIDI setup, just like a Pro-Solo. It has a USB Host port (USB A type socket), a MIDI In and a MIDI Out (both 5 pin DIN).
MIDI data received at the MIDI In socket will be sent to the USB device. MIDI data received from the
USB device will be sent to the MIDI Out socket.
The attached USB MIDI device MUST be 'Class Compliant'.
The MIDI USB HOST is powered by a regulated 5V mains adaptor (supplied), and can supply up to
500mA of buss power to the attached USB device.

Attractively finished in brushed aluminium with black screen print
Dimensions: 110mm x 55mm x 32mm

     Power:         90mA, 2.1mm plug (centre positive) –
510mA available for attached USB device
     Dimensions:         110 x 55 x 32 mm
     Weight:         100g (excluding power supply)
MIDI:         1x IN, 1x OUT – both 5 pin DIN
Power Supply:         5V DC (regulated) – use only the supplied adaptor
(never use an unregulated supply as unregulated supplies typically give a
higher output than shown).
We will include the correct power supply according to the delivery address.

* How to Enable MIDI MONO Mode without a PC/Mac (for sending MIDI Note On/off messages on 6 separate MIDI Channels - for  use with an iPad or Hardware Synth)

Anyway, Hardware (MIDI MONO Mode ) Mode is available if you keep the UP button on the FTP Controller "D pad" pressed while turning the device on.

Above Link takes you to Costas Calamvokis' reply on Yahoo MIDI Guitar group where he clears up that the FTP does work with Ipad.

QuoteI wrote this code and it doesn't remove glitches!

I think what the manual is referring to is this: When the TriplePlay controller is switched on it is in poly mode (all the MIDI data on channel 1), so it will work with synths on the iPad and other applications like GarageBand. When the TriplePlay Win/Mac software is running it will switch the controller into mono mode (one channel per string) if the patch requires it. Mono mode has clear advantages for midi guitar as each string can send individual pitch bend.

Here is a pic of Fishman TriplePlay working with iPhone

I had Tripleplay working with 2012 Ipad Mini 32GB (IOS 6.1.3) and Apple Lightning USB Camera Adapter providing the USB Host port  - triggering IK Multimedia Sampletank (works well), very fast triggering too!

There were early reports from iPad3 and 30 pin Apple CCK owners of FTP requiring a Powered USB Hub to work.
https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=5188.msg59419#msg59419

But problem was tracked down to employing a non Apple USB Camera Adapter or Camera Connection Kit.

No separate Powered USB Hub required .

As long as you use a genuine Apple USB Camera Adapter or Camera Connection Kit, the Fishman TriplePlay Receiver can be powered directly by your IPad.

The FTP Controller Volume Control Pot sends MIDI CC#7, and the "Up and Down" buttons on the FTP "D-Pad" send MIDI Patch change commands, Up and Down.
The default FTP mode will send all Note On/Off events on MIDI Channel #1
If I hold down the "Up" button on the FTP D-Pad while powering on the FTP Controller, the FTP will send each string's MIDI Note On/Off event on Six separate MIDI channels:

MIDI Channel #1 = High E
MIDI Channel #2 = B
MIDI Channel #3 = G
MIDI Channel #4 = D
MIDI Channel #5 = A
MIDI Channel #6 = Low E

I can report the Fishman Tripleplay Receiver works excellently with the iConnectMIDI device's "USB Host to 5 pin MIDI" feature.

The Tripleplay defaults to Chromatic Mode, and I fed an older 1994 era Casio CTK-750 keyboard's General MIDI Piano patch as a test.  Very fast reliable triggering, no errors and No detectible latency due to the iConnectMIDI device's ultra fast  "USB Host to 5 pin MIDI" conversion function.

How to reset and initialize the TriplePlay Controller

Try returning the tripleplay controller to defaults.  Unplug the receiver and turn off the controller.  While holding the D-Pad button forward (towards the headstock), turn the device on.  Then, turn it off for two seconds and turn it back on again.

Then, turn it off again.  While holding the D-Pad button backward (towards the strap button at the tail), turn the device on again.  Then, turn it off for two seconds and turn it back on again.

FTP USER DEFINED ALT TUNINGS

Fishman says

QuoteHi Steve,

We don't have global alternative tunings options.

For simple patches, it would be an option to use string splits to create drop D or DADGAD, by creating multiple synths with individual transpositions.  You could arrange user patches into songs, and use the song navigation to navigate between different tunings.

While I realize this is not ideal for your application, it is one workaround to make this functionality possible for performances with TriplePlay.

Possible solutions for lack of Hardware "Alt Tuning" maps per patch in the TriplePlay.

For FTP users with OSX
MIDIPipe
http://www.subtlesoft.square7.net/MidiPipe.html

MidiPipe is freeware and comes with no warranties. MidiPipe can be useful in a music studio or live on stage to route, map, filter, convert, display, input and output MIDI messages in real-time.

For FTP users with OSX/Win7

If you are using a Kontakt instrument and Gtak you can use Gtak to do this: http://evenharmonic.com/products/gtak5?page=0,14&quicktabs_productinfotabs=2

For FTP users with iPad , boot up in MIDI Mono Mode (hold down the "Up" button on Controller during power on), to provide separate MIDI channel per string.

Then it may be possible to use an IOS app called MIDI Bridge to apply a real time note transpose offset to each MIDI channel

MIDI Solutions Event Processor Plus

The MIDI Solutions Event Processor Plus offers all of the functionality of the MIDI Solutions Event Processor, with 32 settings instead of the Event Processor's 10, and 8 variable storage locations instead of the Event Processor's 2. Each of the Event Processor Plus's 32 settings can be programmed with a unique MIDI processing function. By combining these settings the Event Processor Plus becomes an extremely powerful tool capable of processing MIDI events in almost any way imaginable. You can map MIDI events or ranges of MIDI events to other MIDI events, filter MIDI events or ranges of MIDI events, trigger MIDI events, toggle between MIDI events, sequence through MIDI events, scale or crossfade MIDI messages, transpose notes, scale velocities, map to and from System Exclusive, NRPN, Bank Select messages, store incoming values in variables for later use... the Event Processor is like a swiss army knife of MIDI processing products, an indispensable tool in any MIDI musician's arsenal.

The Event Processor Plus works by comparing each incoming MIDI event with each of its 32 settings. When an incoming MIDI event matches a setting, the event is processed according to that setting. By combining different settings for different incoming events, the Event Processor Plus becomes an extremely powerful tool capable of achieving virtually any combination of MIDI-processing functions.

Following is a list of the Event Processor Plus's functions, but better yet download the Event Processor Plus Programming Tools software and read the Guide to the Event Processor and Event Processor Plus by Bruce Wahler of Ashby Solutions. The Programming Tools software is free for download, quick to install, and contains lots of example files that demonstrate the many applications of the Event Processor Plus. And the Guide to the Event Processor and Event Processor Plus is a comprehensive guide that makes it easy to understand everything these amazing products are capable of!

    Filter MIDI Events

    Map MIDI Events

    Trigger MIDI Events

Cycle Through a Sequence of MIDI Events

    Turn Settings On and Off

    Store Incoming Values in Variables

The Event Processor Plus is programmed by sending it MIDI System Exclusive messages (see FAQs - Programming). This is easily done with the Event Processor Plus Programming Tools software. Once programmed, the Event Processor Plus's settings are retained even after power is removed. The Event Processor Plus can be reprogrammed with new settings as often as needed.

The Event Processor Plus is MIDI-powered, and requires no batteries or power supply to operate with most MIDI products (see FAQs - Power and FAQs - LED for more information). A MIDI indicator LED lights up when the product is powered and flashes when MIDI data passes through it.

Ableton Live 9 and FTP

Quote
The plug-in not working in Ableton is one hell of a bug. I've recently bought Ableton Live 9 so that i could record midi parts using the FTP. Now it looks like im going to have to record parts in Studio One and then export them but that is a very long winded way and will massivly slow down my creativity if i have to keep switching between prgrams.
Has anyone else heard about the FTP plug-in not working in Ableton?

I think its best to wait for updates from early adopters.

There is also an issue for Apple Logic 9 users running 64 bit AU Instruments
QuoteOrren Merton wrote>
Hi all,

Okay, I found the solution. The issue is that {Apple} Logic Pro will not validate the 32-bit TriplePlay AU plug-ins in 64-bit mode _AND_ once you have opened Logic Pro in 64-bit mode, it marks the TriplePlay plug-ins as "not validated" and even when you open Logic Pro in 32-bit mode, it will not see the TriplePlay plug-ins, you have no choice but to manually scan them.

So here are the steps that worked for me:

1) Select Get Info on Logic Pro in the Finder and check "Open in 32-bit mode."
2) Launch Logic Pro
3) Open the AU Manager
4) Select TriplePlay and TriplePlay FX and select "Reset & Rescan Selected" <— they will pass AU Validation and be available.
5) Quit Logic Pro
6) Select Get Info on Logic Pro in the Finder and uncheck "Open in 32-bit mode." Now it will be available using the 32-bit bridge in Logic Pro 64-bit.

This information is not obvious AND MUST BE IN THE FINAL USER MANUAL. Many users use Logic Pro in 64-bit mode, and this will bite them. The manual instructions need to include the information that "Before running Logic Pro, make sure you are in 32-bit mode in order for the plug-ins to be scanned" and then the additional information that "if you have already opened Logic in 64-bit mode and the TriplePlay plug-ins are not available, follow these six steps" and include the steps that I give above. Otherwise, you're going to have a lot of Logic Pro users who try to run the software in Logic Pro, but don't see them even with the 32-bit bridge.

The Tripleplay app should work fine as a VSTi Instrument, for those apps that support VSTi Instruments.

These issues should be sorted eventually, as Apple Logic and Ableton Live are important DAWs and must be supported if Fishman Tripleplay expects to gain momentum and compete in the Guitar to MIDI space in 2013.

As most things we use today , they become brilliantly executed tools - AFTER the software all gets sorted out, which I'm confident it will.

Also there should be a separate method of using Tripleplay - WITHOUT The VSTi Instrument App, rather like any dumb MIDI controller with Ableton.

Regarding the Alt-Tuning question -
Many of the SampleTank presets with the FTP are configured as 6-channel mono synths already, and make it relatively easy to do the alt tuning.  Just click on the Synth button & then adjust the Pitch for each channel as appropriate.

Again, not ideal, but functional for now.

FAST PATCH CHANGES WITH FTP
It may be important to go back and review Burr Johnson's Tripleplay MacBookPro software setup for product demos at 2013 WINTER NAMM

OnStage
http://www.fluqe.com/newnewssoft.htm

Logic Pro

Onstage might be the solution to using FTP with Ableton
http://www.fluqe.com/newnewssoft.htm

What is OnStage?

This nifty little Mac Application take the stress out of your live performance.

With OnStage running seamlessly alongside your chosen DAW, a new level of MIDI controllable file management is added above either Logic Pro or Ableton Live, enabling quick switching between Projects or Live Sets.

How does it do that then?

Onstage enables the user to assign a unique Midi Program Change message to 30 different Logic Pro Projects or Ableton LiveSets. This allows the performer to recall each Project or LiveSet via an 'OnStage' Midi control message.

A Midi which-what?

When OnStage receives a Program Change message, sent by any standard Midi hardware, the current Logic Pro Project or Ableton LiveSet is closed and the file assigned to the received Program Change message is loaded.

Control your Playback

If you're using Playback Tracks within your performance, OnStage allows you to make changes to multiple Logic Pro or Ableton Live files on the fly.

Quickly incorporate automation into your Playback, and without the need to Bounce to a separate Stage Application, changing your Playback Tracks minutes before a performance is a real possibility.

Ableton Live - Wouldn't you just use one Ableton LiveSet?

We love amassing clips in Ableton Live, but sometimes it's more efficient to treat each song as a separate LiveSet. Use OnStage as a Midi controlled file management system that sits above Live to keep track of your latest performance LiveSets.

Transform your Logic Environment

OnStage essentially provides a selection of recallable studio set-ups, transforming your Logic Pro Environment into a powerful Midi patchbay.
Create a unique set of connections from your incoming Midi ports for every song in your set.
Port 1 might be mapped to your EXS24 sampler for the openning number, while it routes to your EVP-88 plug-in via a pitch change transformer for the second.

Instruments and Effects

A collection of recallable Projects allows for a unique set of virtual intstruments and effects for each song in a performer's set-list.

Your DAW can essentially become a suite of effects patches and routings that are instantly recallable via a single Midi Program Change message.

http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/midiguitar/message/34155

>>Is there any plan to have a receiver that has just a MIDI out? The USB
connection to a computer is great but I really don't want to use a computer
live - I've got rack synths already.

Believe us, we thought about all these ideas of piezo pickup, nylon string
guitar, floor unit with MIDI out, bass guitar compatible unit, etc., and
these will come. Also, the Triple Play supports a Hold/Arpeggio/Looper +
Chain pedal set, Burr used these in the demo. This will be optional, not
part of the basic package. Only if these options would come all at the same
time, it would take a hell lot of time until release, and we did not want to
let you wait much longer. So, the product that was shown on the leaflet at
the NAMM is a first release, different packages and auxiliary extensions
will follow soon.
Do not forget that also the first release of the AXON did not work with
bass, with piezo, did not have Arpeggiator, etc...

>> I've got rack synths already.

Specifically, a floor unit with MIDI out was my priority, but I had to admit
that if we would start to sell a unit with a MIDI OUT only, I cannot name a
single rack synth today that would be a good match for the Triple Play,
except as second hand :(

Anyway, if you have still more ideas that we probably did not think about,
we have open ears for that ;)

>>One thing I'd like to be able to do [very important to me] is to use the
unit somehow to get an output of a 6 string bass from a six string
guitar. IOW, tune the strings down 17-17-17-17-16-16 [Or is the last
one 17; I forgot] semitones. What I want is a BEADGC output, one octave
down from a regular guitar. Can you do that with the first unit [or
the software it connects to]?

Just like on the AXON, you cannot transpose strings individually, but you
can define segments and transpose each separately. For your example, you can
define a string split with four strings transposed by 17, and the other two
by 16. This works.

>> There is a Fishman TriplePlay OSX Control GUI app, and I assume a windows
version will exist too?

We had three demo stations at the NAMM, two on MACs, the third one at the
back of the booth was a Windows PC.

>> Can a user buy a base kit, and then purchase additional USB dongles to
connect to multiple MIDI hardware devices? If so, how much for an extra USB
dongle?

If this is what you mean, one transmitter can send data to one receiver
only, this is strictly limited, since communication is bidirectional and
every message is acknowledged back from the receiver to avoid the
possibility of data loss. But of course, you can chain an arbitrary set of
MIDI and USB devices to respond to the transmitter, but these must be
connected with each other through MIDI ort USB cables, depending on the
setup. So, only one receiver for one transmitter.

>> I understand the intial version will not have wireless transmission of
the normal Guitar signal. Since the audio from the guitar is not
transmitted, what are the functions of the Mix and Guitar positions of this
switch?

If you go to the PC with the guitar signal and insert our plugin in the
signal chain you can turn the guitar signal on or off. This is for the
starter kit. On stage, if you go to the guitar amp directly, for the floor
unit -- what exists as a prototype, that John McLaughlin is using - you can
couple the guitar signal through the stomp box, and it is switched on or off
by a relais.

>> If your band has two guitarists, each with a Triple Play equipped guitar,
can you set each to transmit on a different frequency? Or must you transmit
on different MIDI channels?

The system uses one of 80 radio channels, so the number of device pairs is
almost unlimited. You just press a pushbutton on both the transmitter and
the receiver that you want to work together, and they tune to each other
automatically.

>> I never saw Burr playing more than two instruments or a different
instrument on each string. Assuming you had a fast enough computer to handle
the six softsynth plug-in instances, can the Triple Play transmit a
different MIDI channel on each string?

This is what it basically does, and that was the case in all demos. It sends
the lower fret split on channels 1...6 and the upper split on channels
11...16; the hold, arpeggio and looper is on channel 7, so normally it uses
altogether 13 channels. But just like the AXON it can be configured to POLY
MODE, sending all strings on channel 1, if a compromise cannot be avoided.
But in this case there are no splits.

>> Is Pitch bend range adjustable?

Yes, 0...24 semitones.

>> What are the dimensions of the control box on the guitar?

It is about the same surface on the guitar as the GK-2, but much more flat,
so it fits easily into a hard case without carving it out...

>> what are the minimum and "ideal" system requirements for the computer in
question? Is it best to use a Mac? or will a fast Windows PC work too?

System requirements depend on the soft synth that you use, it determines 99%
of the needed computing power. PC and MAC are equally good to use.

Solution for the following Error during FTP Software Installation
Quote"Warning 1910:  Could not remove shortcut Reaktor5.lnk.  Verify that the shortcut file exists and that you can access it."

Huh???   I have no idea if it exists, nor do I know how to access it.

Read the FTP Release notes which covers this
http://www.fishman.com/tripleplay/help
http://www.fishman.com/software/tripleplay/download/tripleplay_releasenotes_2412.pdf
Quote  After installing the Native Instruments Elements" you must update the Reaktor synth to the latest version.Komplete Elements ships with Reaktor 5.6. To work properly with TriplePlay factory patches it must be upgraded to Reaktor 5.8.
Workaround:
1.Upon installing NI Komplete Elements, user will be prompted to update Reaktor to the latest version (5. 8 )
2.Accept the update when prompted

Alternatively - launch the N.I. Service Center App, and click the Updates" link on upper right.

* How to Enable MIDI MONO Mode without a PC/Mac (for sending MIDI Note On/off messages on 6 separate MIDI Channels - for  use with an iPad or Hardware Synth)

QuoteHardware (MIDI MONO Mode ) Mode is available if you keep the UP button on the FTP Controller "D pad" pressed while turning the device on.

and read Utensil's posts here for more details on enabling/disabling pitch bend in hardware mode.

QuoteJust to clarify my version info from the Triple play software:

Software version: 1.0.2402
Receiver version: 1.72
Controller version: 1.90

Any no doubts about it, I've tried on two macs and ipad.

* If I power up without anything pressed (and no fishman software running i.e basic hardware mode). All string data is sent on one channel.

* If I power up with the up button pressed Each string is on it's own channel but it remains in chromatic mode (i.e not pitchwheel data is sent). If I bend a string it generates a note on, off message triggering the next note up.

When in this mode where each string is sending data on a separate channel,

* if I press the left D pad button, from that point on the pitch wheel data is sent and It registers bends and stops retriggering bent notes.

* Pressing the left D pad button again toggles it back to trigger chromatic mod

This looks like a citation from me, but I never said that. Hardware Mode does not mean MIDI MONO Mode at all, it means that everything is programmable. MIDI MONO/POLY Mode is a Global Parameter (among several others) and Quantize=AUTO/OFF/ON/TRIGGER is one of many parameters of a Patch. There are 240 Patches and 100 Songs in the device, each with individual set of parameters.
It is more or less accidental that the default of the Global Parameter MONO/POLY is MONO, while Patch 0 is programmed to TRIGGER Mode. You can change this to AUTO with the following sequence:
ENTER; EXIT; EXIT; EXIT; DOWN; DOWN; DOWN; ENTER; EXIT.
Once you do that your Patch 0 will change to AUTO. If you want to set it back to TRIGGER, then do a MEMORY INIT as described before.

Andras Szalay

We all look forward to the future firmware update that will deliver many of the new features (and documentation) that the FTP Team is working on
https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=5188.msg60779#msg60779
QuoteHardware Mode will be supported officially very soon, so I do not want to make confusion with explanations about it before you can read it in the official documentation.

TriplePlay FAQ

http://www.fishman.com/tripleplay/faqs#tip_28

Is TriplePlay compatible with acoustic guitars?
TriplePlay is not suggested for acoustic guitar. One reason for this is that the pickup requires the strings to be ferrous (made of magnetically sensitive material) and traditional bronze-wound guitar strings are not apart from their cores. However, while TriplePlay is not officially supported for acoustic guitars, some users have reported usable results pairing the pickup with acoustic guitars outfitted with magnetically-active acoustic guitar strings, such as GHS White Bronze or DR Zebras.

How easy is it to remove the TriplePlay hardware and install on another guitar? Is the installation permanent?
The TriplePlay controller and pickup mount with brackets adhered to the face of your guitar, your pickguard or the endpin using a gentle adhesive, requiring no permanent modification to the instrument The controller is held to the bracket with magnets, while the pickup is held to its bracket by a slide-in mechanical connection. You can slide the pickup off its mount and remove the controller from its magnetic holder in a matter of seconds.

Can I buy multiple brackets in order to swap TriplePlay around to my other guitars?
We will have brackets for sale in the future at www.fishmanparts.com. Right now, all resources are going towards complete packages due to demand and manufacturing limitations.

Will there be a TriplePlay version for bass?
We hope to eventually develop TriplePlay for a wide range of instruments, but we don't have any immediate plans for TriplePlay for bass or any instrument other than guitar at this time.

What is the optimal distance from the top of the TriplePlay pickup to the bottoms of the strings?
The distance between the pole pieces on the TriplePlay pickup and the bottoms of the strings should be 1 mm. We have included a tool in the TriplePlay's box to aid in this setting. Check out the installation guide for the hardware here: http://www.fishman.com/software/tripleplay/download/tripleplay_hwguide.pdf

Will Fishman offer a TriplePlay kit for owners to install directly inside their guitars?
Currently, there are no plans for such a product. There are simply too many types of guitars for us to come up with a permanent internal installation that would fit across such a wide spectrum of instruments. We are developing internal TriplePlay systems that will be instituted by several partners on a factory model with built-in TriplePlay, but this is the only option on the horizon. However, we did have a customer email us a picture of a guitar that they built around the retail TriplePlay unit which was quite amazing. So, a clever person with some technical aptitude could certainly try and make our external product into an internal one.

I am a left-handed player. Will TriplePlay work on left-handed guitars?
Our product does not technically support left-handed users in this initial version, although it can still generally be installed, depending upon the physical layout of the guitar. Some of the design features (how the cable runs from the pickup, etc.) are less convenient in this orientation, and the encoder's functionality will be reversed. But other than that, the product will work as expected.

Does the Triple Play pickup need to be installed directly next to the bridge, or could it be placed elsewhere, such as between my guitar's pickups?
The TriplePlay pickup will not respond properly if placed anywhere other than adjacent to the bridge. The closer it is to the bridge, the better its performance will be.

What is meant by "Performance may vary – North American model only"? Can I use a North American version of TriplePlay in Europe?
The broadcast bands for wireless use on the North American model are different than those of the EU model. This may mean that these bandwidths are occupied in countries other than North America. Your results may be fine using the US pickup in your region, or you may encounter problems - we have no way of knowing for sure. European models have broadcast bands specified for use in the EU and are the only version of the product suggested for use in that region.

What kind of platform limitations are there when using TriplePlay as a MIDI controller?
Our software is compatible with Mac OS X 10.6.8 and higher, or Windows 7 and higher. Our software has sounds and other features that maximize TriplePlay's functionality on your computer. That being said, TriplePlay hardware is also a basic MIDI controller that is compatible with virtually any hardware. You could plug into a computer running Windows XP, or an iPad (using the video to iPad USB connector) and it will show up as a simple MIDI input device with any software that accepts MIDI.

Is TriplePlay 13-pin compatible?
The TriplePlay system relies on the processing speed of your computer, so it will not be 13-pin compatible going forward. Our system frees you from the need for slow and clunky 13-pin outboard processors and dated sounds, allowing users to experience guitar MIDI with much more powerful DAWs, modern synths, samplers and sequencers.

If for whatever reason I need to sell my TriplePlay bundle, but I've already scratched off and used the registration card, can the next buyer register the product and be able to use TriplePlay normally?
If you do sell the unit, the buyer can purchase a code card from Fishman by emailing us, which will allow a used unit to be reauthorized. This will cost $30 plus shipping (the code card is shipped - not emailed).

Can all of the bundled software provided with TriplePlay be loaded onto more than one computer; e.g., a desktop DAW for recording and a laptop for performance?
There is no limit to the number of installations of our TriplePlay software that you can perform. Our partner plug-in packages (provided with your software) can be installed on more than one computer, but installations may not be unlimited. You should defer to the information provided with their products for their specific rules of fair use and multiple installations.

If I have full versions of some of the included partner software (such as Native Instruments and IK's SampleTank), do I still need to install the versions that come with TriplePlay?
Our factory patches are only available with full installations of our versions of Native Instruments and SampleTank. If you already have sounds you prefer, you may not be interested in our patches. However, there is no issue installing our versions of the partner software along with the packages you may already have. So if you have the time and the disk space, there is no harm in installing both, and you might get some new patches you really enjoy.

I am receiving an error message that IK's SampleTank can't find installed sounds. What should I do?
1) Reinstall the IK Multimedia sounds. 2) Click 'yes' if you are asked to reinstall with suggested settings. 3) Open IK's SampleTank standalone application. 4) Locate the sounds folder (as detailed in the IK installation portion of our software guide) from within the standalone and then close it. 5) Reinstall TriplePlay.

When attempting to open patches linked to Reaktor, no sounds are loaded, and "not found" shows as the synth sound in the performance window. What should I do?
For Native Instruments, launch the Service Center app, make sure you are registered, and click on the Updates tab. The updates are downloaded by Service Center but are not automatically installed. They are saved to your desktop, and need to be double-clicked to install. Once all the updates are installed, reinstall TriplePlay.

Does TriplePlay function as notation software?
TriplePlay by itself is not notation software, but it integrates with Notion's Progression software for notation, which is shipped with TriplePlay as a fully functional version.

Is TriplePlay 64-bit compatible?
TriplePlay only supports 32-bit plug-ins. If you have a 64-bit version of the plug-in, you will need a 32 to 64-bit bridge, or those plug-ins will not be available. J-Bridge is an ideal piece of software for this.

My TriplePlay controller will not sync with the receiver. How do I get them to pair?

You need to push the button on the receiver, and the small button on the controller. The LED light on the controller is also a button (some people miss this). You need to press this button until the light flashes more quickly (it may require a firm push, especially on the initial attempt after installation) and also press the button on the receiver. When paired, the receiver light stays solidly on, and the controller light flashes more slowly. If this does not work, quit the TriplePlay standalone app, unplug the receiver and turn off the controller. Relaunch the TriplePlay app, plug the receiver back in, turn on the controller, and repeat the pairing process.

How do I set TriplePlay to transmit on a separate MIDI channel for each string?
One way would be to use the TriplePlay plug-in from within your VST instrument, and then load your sounds into the TriplePlay host. The other way would be in the Basic MIDI mode, after booting the device into hardware-only functionality. Download the newest version of the user guide from fishman.com/tripleplay/help and look over the 'boot into hardware mode' part of the hardware portion of the guide.

Can I physically put my guitar into alternate tunings and still use TriplePlay?
Yes, but TriplePlay might not work properly as-designed in regard to splits, as the dots on the fretboard within the app will not align with the frets being played.

Can I keep my guitar's strings in standard tuning, but create TriplePlay patches in alternate tunings?
Yes. You can use string splits to create alternate tunings by creating multiple synths, each with its own transposition up or down, as the case may be. These could then be saved as user patches.

Does Fishman offer or suggest a MIDI foot controller to use with TriplePlay?

You can use any MIDI foot controller from another manufacturer in conjunction with your computer to control TriplePlay.

Is TriplePlay compatible with Windows Vista/XP or Mac OS 10.4x or lower?
No - but TriplePlay will run fine as a simple MIDI device in either of these operating systems. Plug the receiver into any device that can accept MIDI input, and TriplePlay will usually appear as a MIDI device. You just won't be able to run our front end software or provided plug-ins. TriplePlay, for those users, would function as a simple 1-channel MIDI device. For more information, see page 3 of the TriplePlay User Guide: http://www.fishman.com/software/tripleplay/download/tripleplay_user_guide.pdf

Why is the TriplePlay website saying that my code is invalid when I try to register?
You may have accidentally transposed numbers for letters or letters for numbers. This is the most common reason for code failures. The code card should follow the layout: XX#X-X#XX-XX#X - where X is an Alpha character and # is a numeric character. It is common to transpose "1" (one) and the letter "I", or "0" (zero) and the letter "O". The second most common issue is that the code has been previously used. This can only happen if the scratch off code had been removed from the card before you received it. If you scratched off the code yourself, then this would not be possible.

Why do I occasionally hear semitone pitch issues when I pick the strings hard?
If you pick hard, are using light gauge strings, have fret issues with your guitar and/or your string height (action) is very low, the vibrating string may contact an adjacent fret to the one you fretted, simply because the string is so close to this fret. This happens only during the very first cycle of the string's vibration, since the amplitude of the pulse gets much smaller by the second cycle. Knowing this, try one or more of the following steps: 1.With a sound like piano (which would normally have no pitchbend), it is not necessary to play in Trigger mode: try setting your Pitchbend settings within TriplePlay Parameters to "Stepped". 2. Experiment with heavier gauge strings. 3. Try raising the action of your strings or adjusting your neck angle: http://www.fishman.com/software/tripleplay/help/tripleplay_tut10.pdf 4. Pick with a lighter attack or try a thinner pick. 5. Even if you play with a pick, try switching the Touch Sensitivity within TriplePlay Parameters to Fingerstyle mode - this setting skips recognition in the first cycle.

When I record a track in Garageband using TriplePlay patches, the playback is distorted. Can this be fixed?

TriplePlay uses 6 MIDI channels, but GarageBand does not support multiple MIDI channel recording or playback. You can download a free multi-channel audio mixer application called "AU Lab" that will allow you to work around this. http://www.apple.com/itunes/mastered-for-itunes/

I need to permanently remove the TriplePlay pickup and controller mount from my guitar. What can I use to remove the adhesive that will not hurt my finish?
Any remaining adhesive on the face of your guitar can be removed with a damp cotton cloth. Do not use paper towels, as paper fibers can put fine scratches in your finish. Finish by polishing the area with a traditional guitar polish and polishing cloth.

What is TriplePlay's wireless range?
TriplePlay will comfortably transmit distances of 40-100 feet, depending on obstacles and RF interference on the 2.4GHz band (e.g. microwaves, wi-fi).

Can a score that I've notated in Progression be played back through an instrument within TriplePlay?
It is not currently possible to play back a score you have notated in Progression through TriplePlay or other virtual instruments.

What to do if your 'Hardware Mode' stops working the way you want it to:
  • Create and save a simple user patch with a 'Hardware Synth' preset, and with MONO mode selected.  You can also set your dynamics, sensitivities, pitch bend settings, etc., as desired.
  • Save it in your FIRST user preset slot.  It's VERY important that it's your FIRST user preset.
  • Select that first preset and press the "load controller" button.
With current firmware, the FIRST user preset can be loaded onto the TriplePlay controller and becomes your default behavior in "hardware mode".    (Powering up the controller with the "up" dpad key pressed & with no FTP app/vst instance running on the device connected to the receiver.)

This is current as of 5/2013, and I'm pretty sure that with the upcoming enhancements to the app & firmware, this will all behave a bit different (the main reason this isn't doc'd yet).

But, for now, if your HW mode ceases to behave the way you want it, you have probably accidentally overwritten it, & you can restore the behavior following the steps above.
Address the process rather than the outcome.  Then, the outcome becomes more likely.   - Fripp

I installed the new FTP update  this morning 7:00am on my iMac - in this order:

(If you have problems - just retry in a few hours - remember today is opening day of Summer NAMM show, and most MI companies are busy with new product updates on there public servers)

(Be sure you have a good internet connection)

1) Connect the FTP USB Receiver to the PC/Mac

2) Turn on the FTP Controller on the guitar

3) Launch the FTP Control App - it will flash a message "Update is available - want to download and install it?" - click "Yes"

4) On my Mac, the new Version 1.1 FTP Installer downloaded in 3 minutes  and OSX put it in my "Downloads" Folder.(I assume on a PC your default Web Browser may be used - not sure have not installed FTP on a Windows PC yet.)

5) After the download was finished I Verified the location on my hard drive where this new update is located  - then closed the FTP Control App.

6) Now I locate the FTP Update file on my hard drive, and double click to install it.

7) The procedure will prompt you saying it will update your FTP Control Panel and FTP Presets  - click "Yes, Yes, Yes"

8 ) After the new FTP Control Panel update is installed - launch the FTP Control Panel app as you normally do.

9) Everything at first looks the same - but you must now click "Options" , then "Check for Updates"

10) Now the new firmware for the FTP Hardware gets downloaded and installed - after 2 minutes it should be complete.

Mine works  - and still awaiting Fishman to publish updated docs  - existing ones are still dated May 2013.

Here is how to enable the new 64 bit mode on the OSX version of the FTP Control Panel
32-Bit is enabled by default.  To disable 32-Bit, bring up the "Get Info" window for TriplePlay, then uncheck 32-Bit.

Fishman updates the TriplePlay Wireless MIDI software to version 1.1, with over 50 improvements and new features.
Fishman TriplePlay

This wireless MIDI guitar pickup and controller system continues to make waves and has recently won the "Best In Show" recognition at the concluded 2013 Summer NAMM.

Being the most recent MIDI pickup system, TriplePlay presents the latest MIDI guitar controller technology. This easy to mount gear expands the creative possibilities of the guitar and turns it into a full-featured MIDI controller.

The core of the Fishman TriplePlay system is its hexaphonic MIDI pickup and control box that you can easily mount to your guitar. It also has a wireless USB dongle that connects to your computer, functioning as a receiver. Its discrete and non-intrusive form factor makes mounting easy, and when connected it gives you a virtually unlimited palette of sounds, of which you conveniently control wirelessly.
Fishman TriplePlay

Once connected to your computer you can then use your guitar as a standard MIDI controller with your DAW and other software, or you can use the bundled Fishman TriplePlay App. To make setting up quick and easy, the Fishman TriplePlay hardware ships with a comprehensive suite of full version software from PreSonus (StudioOne Artist), Native Instruments (Kontakt Elements and GuitarRig LE), IK Multimedia (SampleTank and AmpliTube Custom Shop) and Notion Music (PROGRESSION 2).

Now Fishman has updated the TriplePlay app to version v1.1, with new features and improved compatibility. Most notable of the changes is the apps 64-bit compatibility with both Windows and Mac platforms, and it now supports Windows 8. Other features include:

New Basic Enhanced Mode lets you activate Pitch Bend in the iPad GarageBand App.
Factory patches no longer requires Elements when using Komplete sounds.
New Import/Export feature for transferring patches from one TriplePlay installation computer to another.
Improved hardware support allows the entire patch list to be loaded into the controller for use in the Hardware Mode.
Software update notification will let you know when new new software releases are available.
Connection stability is improved with enhanced Encoder/Receiver communications.
New Plug-in support to improve scan time and accuracy.
Improved overall performance when used with Windows.
Improved TriplePlay's compatibility with popular DAWs such as Cubase and Ableton Live 9.
Two new TriplePlay mixer audio options allow the Guitar Channel Level to be adjusted independently of Synth Channels.
You can now control the final output volume via an external MIDI pedal
    Various other enhancements and improvements
