When using DSP Guitar & Amp Modeling systems, realize I take for granted and assume everyone already knows what all those vintage instruments and amps sound like. Ive been playing guitar since age 11 (1966)  - grew up in San Francisco/ San Jose music scene, then moved to Chicago, and learned blues  / southern rock modified a few Fenders and Gibson guitars, modified my Plush tube amp for a master volume, then moved to Los Angeles in 76 and toured south western US in a rock band with my LP , Strat and Vox AC 30 Top Boost) , then ended up as a repairman at Valley Arts Guitar ( Studio City) where i was immersed in servicing and modifying many of the famous instruments and amps used on famous records, Movie soundtracks and TV shows, ( from Abba to Zappa)  - still have all the knowledge and skill.    But got laid off my design engineering PCB Layout gig at QSC in April 2020, and doing odd jobs to pay the bills.

Packed up some tools and made house call to local guitarist who owns vintage guitars in need of service.

Owner was reluctant to part with these, preferred me make a house call and implement all repairs in his garage.

Guitar#1 - 1952 Tele SN 5263

replace bad tone pot

The neck is not as thick as rumored, felt like a 63 profile.

Owner kept original parts

He just wanted it restored to functionality as he plays this guitar daily
Installed a solid shaft CTS 250k tone pot.
Original Centralab pot was marked 250k, but reads 292k ohm.

Guitar#2 -1958 ES-335 (SN A29925) must have been built late 1958 to 1959 specs with bound neck

https://loviesguitars.com/gibson-serial-number-identification-dating/

http://www.es-335.org/2016/09/30/fon-or-serial-number/

Owner claims he had Seymour Duncan shop in Santa Barbara  rewind neck PAF  pickup a few years ago, but IMHO it's still wonky. And out of phase and mounted backwards ( shoddy work from prior repair shop) suspect it's not even the original PAF PU under original nickel plated cover.

I was hired to check the PU Selector switch, as it was acting up, notice switch had recently been replaced by a different repair shop .

Cleaned PU selector switch, restored operation , advise owner to have Seymour Duncan redo their work on Neck PU rewind  as current rewound Neck pickup is rather bad.

One important observation, both guitars are stock necks, yet both neck profiles are not as thick as the Fender/Gibson Custom shop historic reissue examples I own or played.

So mark it up as a fallacy that every '52 Fender Tele has a 1"thick Neck profile, that's apparently incorrect.

And the genuine 1959 ES-335 neck profile felt like a '64 to me.

Both had about (.850"-.875") neck thickness at 1st fret.

By contrast my 2016 '58 ES-335 VOS  historic custom shop neck  is 1 inch thick at 1st fret,, perhaps 1.25" thick at 12th fret and feels like the limited run 2010 Gibson Custom shop Jeff Beck Strings &Things 52 LP (Blow by Blow) model =massive neck

Good stuff !!
I can see this turning into quite a good business venture, in-home calls for guitar repairs.
Many would not trust leaving their precious gear in the hands of some dodgy repair shop, that could go bust over night and vanish.

Back to my repair bench, today I'm fixing cold solder joints on a 1965 Fender Pro Reverb - even old amps Leo designed can cut out intermittently, just find the point of failure and fix it
http://www.thevintagesound.com/ffg/pro_reverb_bf.html

http://fenderguru.com/amps/pro-reverb/

THis one had been stored in a barn outside for many decades

the thermal expansion / contractions summer  /  winter even in California compromised numerous connections
numerous issues - no tremolo , bad distortion, must play a power chord to get a sound, which then cuts out on note decay

Trouble shoot with a wood stick , tapping all areas until observe the bad connection

there are prior repairs, and questionable quality - the Type EJ sealed Volume pots had scratchy dead spots, - fixed by rotating the pots full 270 degrees for 100 times  - knocked off oxidation , restored operation for one issue
found a bad 100K plate resistor in the reverb recovery section, and resoldered all brass eyelet board connections

and removed the "death cap" on AC Mains polarity switch   - which will now be a Negative Feedback on off switch

  - he blew the original Oxford speakers ( replaced with Jensen C12N Alnico (italy) circa 2001    -- same guy owns the 52 Telecaster above

The tolex was falling off bottom of Amp , so repaired with 3M weatherstrip adhesive
Note the solid pine cab with tongue and groove joints on the corrners. Front speaker 16 ply Plywood baffle board unscrews from the amp with 5 screws  - surprising how well this cab holds up after 56 years. but the tolex was falling off in various places

side note - dont get this stuff on your hands, as its tough to remove - got some on my right thumb, and found out it altered my thumbprint and no longer could unlock my phone ;)

Completed Amp

Amp sounds great now, the GZ34 rectifier tube, 5881 power tubes and smaller transformers provide more natural compression and touch response vs a Twin Reverb
Great sounding Amp, really good Tremolo and Reverb

gumtown

Had an amp similar to that on my bench last year for repair, same thing, intermittant cut out.
Ended up being a tone control pot, loss of tension on the wiper.
I think it also had a dodgy front panel switch too for bright or something like that.

Now for Amp #2 - all controls are scratchy and intermittent-(Caig Deoxit to the resue)

65 Amps London -its a bit of a Vox AC-30 variation (2 EL84 18 watts)  co designed by Peter Stroud of Sheryl Crow band back in 2004

Supposedly for low stage volume,  but this is plenty loud and can give an ear bleed
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/65amps
(Had a play through, Still prefer my 66 JMI  Vox AC30 Top Boost Reverb Amp , as that old Vox and straight in will deliver Ritchie Blackmore "Hush" tones and infinite sustain  -

(the secret on the old original Vox AC30 Top Boost amp is use your ears on each control -
Use the Brilliant Channel, Vol on "7" to get some drive  - then to get more Midrange, place the Bass on "2.5", Treble on "3", and the "Cut" ( which is like a backwards Presence control)  about noon , and and use guitar with higher output level pickups, and Guitar Tone on "5"  = worked for many hit records Yardbirds to Stone Temple Pilots

65 Amps London was tame by comparison, Its more of a pedal platform amp, with lower gain. and more conservative range of controls and not quite as lively

No master volume. $3k new
https://sixty-fiveamps.com/blue-line/london

One curiosity, (far right) the 1st stage  EF806SG (Russian) preamp  tube mounted on rubber also has a unique internal shield for lower noise
(trivia - same tube is used in recent Neumann U67 microphones too

Amp is all back together, just needed a few spritz of Caig DeOxit on all pots, jacks, switches tube sockets and its like new

Nicely built. Glad they can charge $3k, labor and parts on that add up quick. Rough rule of thumb: plan to sell for 3x costs.

Glad they've rubber mounted the pentode. Chopstick any one of those and  immediately hear why.

Tone differences vs. your vintage AC30 - speakers a big contribution. Give these ones more years, they'll get closer.

Amps like this weigh too much for me to gig, no matter how much I love them. (The two full weight Celestions big contributors.) A Princeton Reverb is  Goldilocks for this older guy.

Love tube amps, just can't get all the tone varieties I need at a gig with them.

Superblues AT-15 Amp arrived

It's compact well built, birch plywood cab, no particle board

Tone is very much like a 15 watt Fender Pro Junior - This Amp will make a good pedal platform (feed an EHX OD Glove will get you great blues/rock at lower volume )

Edit: just played it on Vol cranked up 3/4 up (3:00 o'clock), Tone at midway up (12:00 o'clock) with a Gibson ES-3399 Custom shop, into Input #1 = Great singing Tone and more grind vs the Strat clone I tried earlier at lower volume

Input #2 is lower gain and cleaner tones -common practice on these designs

Eminence speaker is fine, not too shrill , smooth balanced tone

The Reverb is decent, uses a small spring unit. Not bad.

The Tremolo is a Bias type, Intensity comes on a bit strong too early with setting at "3", is like a Fender on "10"
With Intensity on max, it duplicates the old Vox Super Beatle Repeat Percussion tremolo effect and Speed goes from very slow to very fast - its perfect for Link Way "Rumble" and old surf /blues
I'll make a few mods -but it's a decent little amp

A clever DIYer could fit a 12" speaker in this cab, but requires a lot of work as front baffle board is glued to cab

Front grill cloth is on a removable panel (internal screws)

Internal PC board labeled "BOSTON ZJG-03-T.

The Output Transformer has 8 ohm and 4 ohm taps.

I'll add 8 ohm, 4 ohm extension speaker jacks -for most options

Internal PC board labeled "BOSTON ZJG-03-T.
"BOSTON" was a brand for YajiaMusic
http://web.archive.org/web/20050412000716/http://www.yajiamusic.com:80/enlish/default1.htm

For $285 it's a fine Amp.

Same amp teardown here
Same Amp is here

Update

Played a few sessions with this Amp, found stock micro Reverb pan anemic and way too short delay

Replaced with a MOD P-RMOD-9EB3C1B, and big improvement

Testing the MOD Reverb tank

Just fits in the width of the wood cab.

I plan on making further mods (harmonic tremolo , FX Loop, solo boost, master volume, etc.

Completed a PMT DMT tone control installation in a MIJ Gretsch 6128 with factory TV Jones filtertrons

https://guitarelectronics.com/dmt-passive-dual-mode-high-low-pass-tone-control/

Great guitar, but left the factory without a string ground -so I removed the tailpiece and installed the string ground wire, swapped out Master Volume for the PMT DMT push pull Tone control-  yields Treble cut or Bass cut

=============

Up next, resurrects a long time acquisition  - but Im reminded of quote from one of my favorite 1962 Sci fi movies "The Brain that wouldn't Die -

"Behind this door is the sum total of the Doctors mistakes" -and I remember them all

Next on bench is my 1964 Fender Deluxe Reverb.
(Pristine examples go for $5k
Sadly this has not been stock since 1981

https://robrobinette.com/AB763_Model_Differences.htm

I learned electronics hands on  from numerous attempts, which establish a foundation of knowing what not to do , as a result of 1st hand knowledge. aka "empirical research".

In 1982, many LA  session players were trading in their 60's Blackface Fenders for a Mesa Boogie or Yamaha G100 with a EVM 12L

I acquired this 1965 Fender Deluxe Reverb Amp for $200 , being sold on consignment at Valley Arts , (I recall it was once owned by LA wrecking crew guitarist Dennis Budimer ) and since I was employed full time as one of leading amp techs in LA , the amp was immediately my go to platform for experimentation (= education which landed me a long career in electronics)
On this AB763 Deluxe Reverb I proceeded to mod the hell out of it (Mesa 50 watt transformers and Hiwatt Clean channel, and Boogie Lead channel with FX Loop and relay switching.

( I also had a higher power 1968 Dual Showman Reverb head  - that ended up with Blues wonderkid Corbie Yates (sad story,  deceased).
Used it for many LA area gigs when my band "ITMZ" played FM Station (Filthy McNastys), Madame Wongs, Club 88, The Starwood), and recording at Bill Schnee studio No Hollywood.
One reason I never subscribed to Vintage Guitar, because I was always floored by what the current street value of my vintage gear , (my music "tools")  had risen too, as most were acquired when I was age 16-26 , when I could get them for $200-$500 - paid $125 for my 1966 Vox AC 30 Top Boost Reverb Head out of LA Recycler in 1977

In 1999, I was cleaning my storage locker, and stumbled upon the box with the original 1965 Fender Deluxe transformers which had been in storage since 1981, so I decided I should try to put the amp back to "stock"  - well I left a Vol pot pull boost on Reverb channel and employed shielded cables  for lower noise. swapped out the Boogie transformers ,  , (still need to make a new protective steel chassis plate to cover the large chassis hole surrounding the power transformer)
Since  I was playing surf music, I  thought the EVM 12L should stay to give a bit more bottom end in the open back cab , but this amp with EVM 12L never quite worked for me, compared to my  pedal board overdrives feeding a stock Roland Cube 80XL with its closed back speaker ( must have played hundreds of gigs with the Cube 80XL 2007-2015, get most of tone from Boss SD-1 or EHX OD Glove pedals when band did occasional blues/ rock tunes - but most of the set was reverb drenched clean surf tone)
Today I will go further to clean up and restore the 64 Deluxe Reverb -and install the Jupiter 12" 12LC 8 ohm speaker I ordered in 2017 (loved it in the Milkman 20Watt Creamer Amp I played at LA Amp show)

https://milkmansound.com/collections/amplifiers/products/20w

But I do have a yearning for installing a 1962 Brownface Concert Amp Harmonic Tremolo mod ( I have holes in  Chassis for 2 more tubes (from prior FX Loop) - hmm . . .

Had to re-glue Tolex portions that were falling off Amp, and using duck tape to Clamp overnight until dry
Amp has been in storage for past 10 years (I've owned the amp 40 years - yikes)

The next day after the glue dried, I  just had a play through with the new Jupiter 12C speaker ( its built by WGS) - and Holy Moly!

This amp finally sings  - I may just simply clean up pots and tube sockets, and go play gigs as is!
and it spells out how crucial the  Speaker is to the Guitar tone! ( and why CAB IR boxes with the right IR capture of a vintage speaker can alter the tone and feel of even old DSP MFX.

The EVM 12L was very clean and good bottom end, but for solos it had a "too bright top end" ( like a Katana 100  , that frankly could get a bit brittle at high volume and if the cab was mic'ed wrong (i.e. SM57 @ dead center = crap too bright tone.

By contrast, this Jupiter 12LC Speaker delivers smooth break up tones I hear all day on Sirius XM BB Kings Bluesville Channel. I have the pull gain boost on Reverb channel that shorts the 3.3MEg ohm reverb recovery signal path and that gives a great drive tone that used to sound way too harsh with EVM 12L, but with the Jupiter 12LC speaker its smooth singing Sonny Landreth tones
btw The original 1964 Oxford speaker was lost when Valley Arts store burned down 1994

BTW another easy tone secret   - for  instant 6 dB Boost on the Reverb channel on any AB763 Circuit amp ( 763= July 1963) , just remove the Normal channel 7025 (12AX7A) preamp tube, play through the Reverb Channel   = instant Derek Trucks tone
its explained very well at Rob Robinette's excellent site

Restored my 64 Fender CHAMP Amp
Purchased at a music store in Lawndale, CA 1976 for $50.

After CBS purchased Fender,  they wanted the Fender Brand Logo on all amps

Below is a 1965 with Fender logo on grillcloth

shawnb

I have some old oddity amps...

I have a '70s Gibson G-70 that I picked up along the way.  Extremely clean, loud, solid-state amp.  And heavy...  Prior owner used it for keyboards.  I sometimes use it instead of a PA for my modeling gear.

When driven, its natural overdrive is quite distinct.  Pinched & chirpy, there's some resonance/q going on in there somewhere.  A surprisingly good sound straight up with guitar.

The pots are a mess, though.  Extremely noisy.  I've cleaned them a few times with a spray, and they're tolerable for a few weeks, & then they go back to where they were - unusable.  I had them cleaned by a pro once and it was good for about a year.

I wish there was a permanent fix for that...  New pots?

I was about to bring it to the shop here in SF for ideas, but I'm between jobs atm.  No money for nice-to-have projects these days!

I also have a modified old '50s Fender Vibroluxe that I bought off a friend when their punk band broke up ~1982.  This amp definitely has stories to tell...  lnside is a sticker identifying the customization was done by a shop in Hawaii.  Unique finished solid oak enclosure replaced the old tweed; though it still has the original cloth grill & knobs.  The vibrato circuit was removed & replaced with a Marshall style preamp, so depth/speed/tone became bass/mid/treb.  Only 4 knobs on those older ones.  So it's kinda a Frankenstein amp...

Years ago, a local amp repair guy (his name was Hal Fletcher, IIRC) told me this amp was a total gem & unique.  I had it in for a tuneup.  Worthless now, since it was customized, but an outstanding sound and appearance.  Said the folks in Hawaii did great work.  When I picked it up, he was playing it in the shop; he was genuinely sad to see it go...
Address the process rather than the outcome.  Then, the outcome becomes more likely.   - Fripp

Shawn,

Sorry to hear about your job situation

Often a fix for a pot that refuses to respond to Caig deOxit , is my original 1983 era Caig Cramolin R5-which was the superior original chemical formula (now banned in California)

When the Potentiometer does not respond to that, then replacement is in order (www.amplifiedparts.com)

getting permanently laid off work due to various factors (covid, age, working same company for 20 years that gets purchased by a rival larger company who then views me as a redundant cost burden - tends to force one's perspectives. Former delayed  side projects suddenly have available  time for closure, many I've intended to complete for past 30 years, while I continue to seek or create new job opportunities

The world is constantly changing, especially in the department of technology, where are the typewriter or television/appliance service people today?

The future of my job is a little uncertain, ironically been really busy the past few years installing latest state of the art fiber networking equipment for our sole client (the national power grid in NZ), whom has decided that the new equipment will be maintenance free from now on.
Which also this time next year coincides with a nation-wide "shake up and restructure", retendering of regional contracts and resizing of regional areas, which has me worried, being in the less than 8 years till retirement, and a new wave of university post graduate engineers coming on board, out with the old and in wit the new kind of school of thinking currently.
Top it off with the conicidence the office lease here is also up for renewal at the same time next year (all this is the first time in 20 years), and the client has asked the place be prepared (for vacating maybe?).
The uncertainty is the worst part, quite a sweet job here, but I think if I was let go, I would probably be relieved in a strange kind of way.
Scenarios would be
1: no change in employment, but job title is diminished (part time)
2: change of brand name on the hat, but same as above.
3: thrown under the cart as per Admin's previous post.

CAIG DeoxIT FaderLube 5% Spray,
It works fine for about a day, then the solvents dry off and leave a sticky residue for even more dust to stick to, and make it worse.
If you are that far into a project of fixing a dodgy pot, if a replacement is easily sourced, then replacement is the best option.
Sprays and stuff are not a permanent repair.

Mrchevy

I'm a lefty, but play right handed. The only one who seems to think it's a problem is my wife ???.  my first guitar teacher told me to learn to play right handed as it is no more awkward in the beginning, and right handed guitars are far more plentiful (this back in the mid 70's). Learned right handed and never looked back. Picking up a lefty guitar now feels like day one of guitar lessons and very awkward. I do hold my beer and fishing pole with the left hand though ;D
