I'm still very happy with the iPad version of the Tone app, but I'm wondering if Fender will OK the Tone app on Apple Silicon Macs...might be a partial solution for those people wanting a Mac version of Tone for the GT/GTX.

Should be possible

MacRumors reader Amy tells us that she's able to run iOS apps that are not available on the Mac App Store on ‌Apple Silicon‌ apps using .ipa files.

Legitimate .ipa files that are downloaded from iTunes or something like an iMazing backup can be double-clicked and installed on an ‌Apple Silicon‌ Mac and they run as if they're on an iOS device. Amy says that she's used this method to install Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, Spotify, and more, even though those apps are not available through the ‌Mac App Store‌.

"Confirmed that it works on my M1 Mac Mini. Using it is really useful when recording and I wish Fender did release a windows store app in a similar fashion.

There's a few issues I think. I noticed that it does not retain my sign-in information. And you can't resize the app window. Other than that, works great. Really happy that this is now possible.

App Store: You don't need iMazing. You can download straight to your M1 Mac."

After reading this, and thinking for a bit, I had to come back to this topic and lay out what's on my mind.

So Apple are possibly going to merge IOS and OSX closer together, now that both machines are going to be running similar CPU architecture.

So... where does this leave USB devices which require a 3rd party driver (aka Roland/Boss),
will OSX drop support for 3rd party drivers and only allow "Apple Approved Devices",
or will IOS (iPad) gain 3rd party USB driver support?

True

Roland/Boss devices being  non USB CLASS COMPLIANT is going to negatively impact sales.

They don't understand the importance.

And odd as Roland co wrote the USB Audio 2.0 Spec in 2006

Meanwhile competing
USB CLASS COMPLIANT devices work on mutiplatforms at 24 bit Audio without USB drivers today.

Very interesting point IMHO. Fro a user perspective it really seems that it's done on purpose to push programmed obsolescence into devices. Although as an happy user I was happily impacted by long lasting VG99 drivers and editor/librarian lifetime, when the 64 bit thing arrived VG99 was abandoned. At that point they knew about SY1K arriving so.. maybe done on strategy.
However this poses another interesting point. Apple is pushing everybody into a walled garden with M1 architecture. It's great (for now) until you use native apps and Rosetta 2 is doing fine but if you look at the platform itself, they justified the transformation of computers (desktop / laptops) into a closed hardware platform (that was long time coming BTW). I am writing from a 2012 Macbook pro (RAM and HDD easily upgradable) no way you can change components when they got weird. It's a black box. So it might also push people away from Apple. Interestingly enough, VG99 is dead only on macOS. Win10 still compatible without any problem. Musicians are not known for having unlimited financial resources and if a Wintel does the job, why not?. Apple is forcing  planned obsolescence. What remains to be seen is the cloning SDD capabilities of those M1 Macs because at least you can extend life of the Computer by booting from external drive (as I do from my 2013 iMac) or at least you can attempt a repair... but a when a soldered SDD dies.. you better have alternatives. Five years time are worth the investment but usually macs lasted for longer. I love macs don't get me wrong. I take my enjoyment in making music seriously and I have Macs only. No time for messing up, but sometimes especially lately I am really thinking about getting me a Windows 10 Desktop and say goodbye. What do you think?
