Use a USB Class Compliant Audio interface + OTG Cable

The Nux MG-300 works well

Rhcole

Yeah, but Android stripped out the USB I/O versions 9 forward. You can't even get to them through Developers Options. It's like they disabled USB in.

What is your Android device with non working USB OTG capability?

My Samsung Galaxy S10+ (Android 10) connects to this passive USB-C Hub
Just tested this week  - no need to enable "Developer option"

NUX MG-300 with the stock USB Cable connects via USB-A  to  this USB HUB

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07Y1V18ZY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

the above USB-C hub connects to the USB-C port on my Samsung Galaxy S10+ (Android 10)

and i can use Audio from MG-300 ( or any other USB Class Complaint Audio device) to record / playback 24 bit Stereo Audio into Cubasis , ExtremeAudio USB Recorder Pro, Field Recorder

My LG V20 on Android 9.0 works too

Admin,

I have three Samsung Android devices; a Note 8 that I refuse to update beyond 9.0 because that's how Samsung ruined my last phone, making it run hot, sluggish, with poor battery life. This phone stoppped processing USB recording when it changed from 8.X to 9.0

I have a Galaxy Tablet S4 that processed USB audio just fine until updated to 9.0. Then it no longer worked.
I have a Galaxy Tab S6 that came with 9X preinstalled, and it is on 10 now. It has never been able to record USB audio.
I love these tablets as Windows substitutes, but USB audio recording simply doesn't work on them, OTG be damned.

I do my recording on the iPad, because of these issues.

A quick Google search :

QuoteAOA protocol specifies how an accessory can establish communication with an Android device via USB. Due to the low power output of Android devices, AOA requires the accessory to act as a USB host, meaning the connecting accessory must power the bus.

Meaning a powered Hub may be required to power the USB port of the connected device and/or phone USB.

and:
QuoteAndroid devices can work in USB host or device mode. Host is the one which controls USB communication. PCs mostly operate in host mode. Device is the one which is being powered and controlled by the host. Flash drive is a common example of USB device. Linux/Android kernel supports device mode through different gadget drivers. UMS, MTP, ADB are different gadget modes on Android devices.

Later Android versions changed the options for USB, where you need to select in the USB menu, the type of mode the USB port operates in for a connected device.
Where previous versions required an OTG adapter to tell the USB port to operate in "Host Mode".

Tried powered mixers, cables, changed adapters, no dice. Hours wasted for nothing so far. Bright ideas more than welcome

Maybe its your specific generation hardware

All my Android devices (LG V20, Galaxy S10+) employ USB-C  - which tends to have better OTG USB Hosting capabilities vs a micro USB device

Even the Mooer GE300 works with my Android phones

Perhaps  just a liability of recent Samsung hardware or OS tweaks? Sure, why not?
At any rate, after a point it's time to let it go and come up with a workaround.

Would be nice and clean to use just one box.

If you read the provided link above,  apparently an errant App might prevent  USB Audio on Galaxy S8

Id back up. and then do a factory reset. Remove all apps  -  then install USB Recorder or Field Recorder and test your USB Class Compliant Audio interface with a known working USB OTG adapter cable

Google Play Store provides a 2 hour "test drive" or apply for a refund
