street price for MPC X is $1850  if you shop around - (Call your order in)

The smaller MPC-Live $1000 and battery powered works with Tripelplay too - but it lacks several features of the MPC-X ( No Hi-Z Guitar input, No CV/Gate Output)

But both versions allow adding an internal SATA Drive  - many install a 1TB SSD to hold all their audio / backing tracks  / sample loops

The cat's out of the bag! First, US retailer Sweetwater went live with its product pages for two big new AKAI Professional units: MPC X and MPC Live. We picked up rumours of both products in mid-December, but now it looks the info we had was pretty much spot on. Update: AKAI's official webpage is now also accessible with more details and images.

Wow! It's great to see this unit on a hi-res 'official' photo, rather than the grainy phone snap we previously had. The heart of the MPC X is a 10.1" touch screen, accompanied by 16 touch-sensitive pads and 16 endless rotary encoders, each with its own OLED display.
And we're just getting started. The I/O includes eight CV/Gate outputs, 4 MIDI outputs and 2 MIDI inputs, 2 USB connectors, 8 line outs and 4 inputs. Inputs 1 and 2 are XLR/jack combos, while 3 and 4 are either Line or RCA/cinch, with selectable phono mode.
The MPC 2.0 software will, it seems, follow Live and Bitwig Studio in allowing users to launch quantised loops or clips. That's a huge functional leap, seeing as this function wasn't available at all before now on this platform.
The price on the Sweetwater site is given as $2199 plus taxes, which is decent. If you compare what you'd need to invest in a PC setup to get the same functionality, you're probably saving money. And if the software is stable, this might become a very popular tool.
UPDATE: We're seeing €1799 quoted as a street price, that's definitely in the affordable bracket.
When the official product page for the MPC X goes live, we'll update you with links for more detailed information. There's no mention yet at the AKAI site on the new gear, as they are probably gearing up for an announcement to coincide with the upcoming NAMM show.
MPC Live

Although there had been a rumour about this, there was hardly any firm information to go on. Looking at the hi-res shots on the Sweetwater site, it looks like it's design follows the MPC X, and is also a standalone unit. The touch screen is a more compact 7", and accompanies 16 touch-sensitive pads. A 16GB internal RAM offers space for storing your audio, but you can add your own SD cards and external drives. And it will also run off batteries, although a power connection is, of course, also available.
On the rear panel, there are two MIDI inputs and outputs, three USB ports and a stereo input with jack or RCA as connector options. A switch toggles between Line and Phono modes. On the output side, the MPC Live has 6 mono jacks, with one as a Master L/R pair. It also runs the MPC 2.0 software.
The pricing as featured on Sweetwater's site is $1199 plus taxes. The battery option might be very attractive for people needing complete mobility.
UPDATE: We understand the street price is likely to be around €999.

MPC 2.0

This is the new version of AKAI's production software, which runs on both these units when they're operating on standalone mode, but apparently can also run on your computer – both as a standalone application and also – and this is pretty neat – as an AU or VST plug-in within your DAW. That opens up all sorts of sound-shaping options, and lets you use all your DAW tools an plug-ins on your MPC 2.0 sounds. That's pretty flexible. This version has also seen other upgrades, such as audio track recording and an improved time warp. Nice.


Had a play with the MPC X today. It seems to have everything but I could not get my head around the user interface. It's like they have deliberately made it as 7nlike a computer DAW as possible, and screwed it in doing so.

Nice. It's clearly got everything in there.
But no over all track view? How to arrange stuff? Move parts around? I'm a very visual person and I've been reliant on an arrange page since Cubase was launched. 😟
I'm sure it's fine if you are used to the MPC workflow, but I'll stick with my old Roland MV8800. Less stuff but more of a complete arrangement and production studio.

IMHO - it all about supplying guitar parts in a popular loop format (MPC) for todays producers = more opportunities for getting your guitar tracks used on today's music

John Mayer is no stranger to controversy - some guitarists simply refuse to get over his actually-pretty-good Strat-a-like with PRS, the Silver Sky - but in a rare interview with our pals at Guitar World, the blues heartthrob has now detailed his forward-looking approach to recording guitars, which is sure to ruffle a few more traditionalist feathers.

"When I'm playing on people's sessions these days, I don't usually bring an amp; I record all my guitars through my Akai MPC [X]," Mayer claims. "Why? Well, because that's what the rest of the music is suggesting. When everyone is using virtual instruments and virtual effects, there's no oxygen.

"Those frequencies are so well cordoned off, a Bassman amp with three mics put on it literally will not fit inside the song. There's a lot of resistance to that from producers."

We're surprised Mayer would turn to a standalone unit to record guitar parts rather than go direct into the desk in a studio setting, but it seems to be working, judging from the number of sessions he's been called upon to perform since switching up his tonal approach.

"My guitar parts are getting on three times more records these days than when I came in with my guitar amp and a couple pedals and mics. It wasn't fitting the lexicon, so I had to really look at that and ask, 'Is the old way of doing things really honouring the electric guitar?'

You're damn right Jimi Hendrix would have been unplugging from a Marshall and holding the guitar cable in his hand, looking around the room going, 'Where can I plug this into?'

"Pick your favourite guitarists from the '60s and ask yourself, if they were around today at the age they were in the '60s, would they have embraced new technology? Damn right, they would've! You're damn right Jimi Hendrix would have been unplugging from a Marshall and holding the guitar cable in his hand, looking around the room going, 'Where can I plug this into?'"

Although we can't quite imagine Hendrix guesting with Ed Sheeran or Barbra Streisand, Mayer raises an interesting point: if you're working with a producer outside of the rock world, they'd most likely prefer a clean DI'd tone that they can manipulate with plugins as opposed to forcing a traditional guitar sound into a crowded mix.

Again, this fuels our ongoing 'the guitar isn't dead; it's just been re-contextualised' theory, echoed by Muse's Matt Bellamy, who dubbed it "a textural instrument rather than a lead instrument". Cue outrage in one, two, three...

This whole thread is very interesting.
I have been thinking about using something like this for backing tracks. After watching this it make me think I can just eliminate a DAW until final mixing. Thanks a lot for posting and updating this.
If anyone is using this for guitar synth music I would be very interested to see / here.
