The worst possible midi device adapter you could get is this

They are not up to data stream transfers like system exclusive patch data, and most have the required optical isolation missing.
I recommend a Roland UM-One midi device adapter, it will always work....
You can use that to drive VST midi instruments via the GR-33 midi port.
Free "GR-55 FloorBoard" editor software from https://sourceforge.net/projects/grfloorboard/

If you own GR-33 - and want to record, you also need an Audio Interface for your WinPC or Mac, and many include 5 pin DIN MIDI I/O.

If you are on a budget, I always recommend owning an Audio Interface that not only has decent Mic Pres, and good audio specs, 24bits@ 96kHz minimum, but also has 5 pin DIN MIDI I/O jacks.

Review the Survey of Audio interfaces,

the Focusrite Scarlet 2i4, Roland Duo-Capture EX  Duo are affordable and meet these requirements.

I've had great luck with an M-Audio MidiSport 1x1.  Handles large sysex messages with no problems at all.

I've used the Midiman USB Midisport 2 x 2 with great success.
