Boss GP-10 Frequently Asked Questions

Quote• Be aware that string buzz due to a warped neck or worn frets, or faulty octave adjustment, can cause problems such as wrong notes being produced.
• This unit does not support 7-string guitars/basses or other non-standard guitars/basses. Check the Web for details about installing GK pickups

• On the Roland website, the "GK-3/3B Installation Tips" page provides an explanation and photos on how to attach a GK pickup. Be sure to take a look!
http://roland.com/V-Guitar/howto.html

• When tuning a guitar that's equipped with a vibrato arm, tuning one string may cause other strings to drift out of tune. In this case, start by tuning each string approximately, so that the correct note name is shown, and then retune each string repeatedly until all strings are tuned correctly.

What does the Boss GP-10 do that the GR-55 cant ?

* GP-10 has instant patch changes without the GR-55's long silent 200 millisecond Gap on every patch change

* GP-10 has up to 4 CTL Control Pedal assignments and Two Expression Controllers - GR-55 is limited to One CTL pedal and one Expression Pedal.

* GP-10 has 8 channel USB Audio I/O for "Re-Guitaring"

* GP-10 has slightly faster Guitar to MIDI.

* GP-10 has updated COSM Guitar Modeling with more detail and clarity of the Acoustic Sims and Alt Tunings, and better sounding COSM Amp Modeling  (compared to GR-55)

If you are completely new to Roland Gk hex PU systems, its best to watch all the related youtube videos on the other related Roland VG/GR gear  - as these have been out there much longer and most of us here have been using VG / GR hex PU devices over 30 years.

Here is a good list of starting reference material for new GP-10 users :

* Cant change the SYS:OUTPUT type? - If your headphones are connected to the GP-10's Headphone jack , the Boss GP-10 will force the Output Select type to "LINE/PHONES" - unplug your headphones if you desire different Output Types when feeding other Guitar amps.

* Hearing Your Normal (Guitar) Pickup  - The 2014 Boss GP- finally has a working GK-3 three way switch on most factory presets !!

* Setting the Pickup Sensitivity

Adjusting the GK pickup sensitivity settings in the GP-10 is crucial for optimum tracking results. The Boss GP-10 has three "slots" (GK1, GK2, GK3)  for storing three unique Global GK configurations. But it also has a choice of PATCH SETTINGS, which allow you to create GP-10 patches where the GK Type 1,2,3 are dynamically selected automatically.

I should also add that :
1995-2011 Fender Roland Ready Strat  = Set "GK Mode" type on VG-99/GR-55/GP-10 to "GK-2A"

2012- (current) Roland GC-1 = Set "GK Mode" type on VG-99/GR-55 to "GK-3"

2014 Boss GP-10 has adds "GC-1" option to its "GK MODE" types.

*  Since the Boss GP-10 is NOT USB CLASS COMPLIANT  it will always require a PC running Windows or a Mac running OSX to provide a path for the Boss GP-10's USB software driver to enable Guitar to MIDI over USB to function. Many Daws can reroute MIDI data from Boss GP10 to a separate 5 pin MIDI I/O interface, or separate USB Keyboard /Tone module.

So forget about using Kenton USB Host to MIDI or any of the iConnetivity units, or an IPad running MIDIBridge to act as interface between Boss GP-10's USB port and a 5 pin MIDI I/O cable.
But look below for Raspberry Pi MIDI interface option.

Soon we will have 5pin DIN MIDI I/O on the Boss GP-10 ( add $45 for Raspberry PI and generic MIDI I/O cable)  - so GP-10 will be able to drive external MIDI hardware synths without a PC / Mac, or be remote controlled by a typical MIDI foot pedal controller

Quote
I did not see the tuner work with 1/4 in..

Here on my unit I have GK Connect set to "AUTO" and with no GK 13 cable connected to GP-10, I plug only one 1/4" cable from my guitar Out to GP-10 Guitar In and Tuner works fine - remember to only play one string at a time!

Enter the Tuner mode by (A) Press both Up/Down patch navigation pedals at once  or (B) Press Once on the Right Arrow key takes you directly to the Tuner ( which I will probably Mod my GP-10 to make the "Right Arrow" key a dedicated Switch) , either method takes you to a working tuner. The GP-10 can work as a small "Live gig rig" with regular guitars just fine. Remember if the "GK Connect" is not set correctly  - then the GP-10 Tuner may not locate the 1/4" Guitar Input jack  signal

* Q: Also the power supply looks cheap?

A:  The Boss GP-10 comes with the updated  Boss PSA-120 Power Adapter with Output = +9VDC @ 500mA
Accepts Global AC Mains Power Input: 100V-240VAC - Roland uses this same Power Adapter on hundreds of products.

The included power supply is the current version of the old Roland PSA Power supply ( just like the ones they used on all the Boss DD3 Digital Delays ) -
Roland was forced to redesign the PSA to a smaller Higher efficiency "Switcher" power supply  to comply with Wee/RoHS standards and the "wart" in the middle of power cord is an inline noise filter (to prevent RF Noise! - to Comply with the new EU/CE TC108 standards for conducted power line RF transmissions - typical side effect of all DSP Audio gear!

I must say My GP-10 has the lowest noise floor of any Roland 13 pin product I ever tried, even when connected to my MacBooks USB 3.0 port - I have silence when I'm not playing. Roland hit a home run here, that can only be appreciated by Actually"hands on use with the GP-10 in real world conditions/

Close up of the built in RF Noise Filter / suppressor on the Boss -PSA-120 adapter cord

QuoteThat said I have many good [power supplies] from the VG-99.

I suggest avoid using the VG-99's Power adapter - the GP-10 only draws 350mA while VG-99 uses an entirely different type. And for others - NEVER use the GP-10 power adapter for your GR-55 or VG-99 - the little 2014 era PSA Outputs +9VDC @ 500mA. Also FWIW, the Visual Sound
One Spot Power Adapters used for typical pedal boards work just fine for the GP-10 , as well as my Poweradd LiION BAttery pack  - this explains why I ordered a 2nd GP-10 - just in time for Busking season on the streets on battery power.

QuoteThis this is easier to get around on than the GR-55.

Oh Yeah!  Call it a generation thing, but this baby boomer here finds lots of great useable tones in the factory GP-10 Presets -
I advise the 1st day for any new owner to print out Large 11 x 17 versions of this BOSS GP-10 FACTORY SOUND LIST, put it on your wall AND STUDY ALL GP-10 CONTROL ASSIGNMENTS ON THE RIGHT FOR CTL1, CTL2, EXPRESSION PEDAL!

* GP-10 Sound List
http://lib.roland.co.jp/support/en/manuals/res/63181372/GP-10_Sound_List_je01_W.pdf

The chart above verifies the GP-10 has far more "live gig friendly " tools for working guitarists, compared to the stark GR-55 - I dare say I could play all night with one GP-10 - but I want to pursue my US-20 controlling two GP-10's into  looper, add that each GP-10 'S AUX IN can accept One of those Belkin RockStar 5 channel Stereo  passive mixers - so Its very possible to setup a rig where GP-10 #1 is doing Guitar modeling / Alt tuning, feed the GP-10 Left out into my iRig Pro and iPad running BIAS, then feed iPad Headphone put into the AUX IN in GP-10 #2 - Even feed the output of my Triplplay driven Korg MicroStation into the Belkin Rockstar passive mixer  I'l have enough options with that setup ( perhaps a few too many ;)

QuoteMight just be that its simpler, but I can fly on it.

The INSTANT patch change and thoughtful use of CONTROL ASSIGNMENTS help BIG time!

QuoteHope the Boss GP-10 Tone Studio editor comes out soon.
Well - everything is delayed after they found bugs with the ME-80 Editor - I suspect the GP-10 Boss Tone Studio won't arrive until 12:01 AM Aug 1st 2014.

Look here:

But I love this GP-10 - the Acoustic Modeling sims to my ears blow away anything else I own, in fact all the GP-10's Guitar Modeling is superb.
With COSM STRATs that actually sound like my real '61 vintage Strat ( and not some damp sponge approximation with DSP forced no sustain,  as on all of my the Line 6 Tyler Variax's) The GP-10 will force me to reassess my tools I'll use this year.

This GP-10 will actually get used at gigs  - instead of my "never leaves home"  Star Trek Shrine , er I mean VG-99 ;) or my collectible Tefunkun Shortwave Radio (er I mean Kemper)

I fully expect my GP-10 will look like this by 2015 - do to being used at many many gigs.

GP-10 Guitar Out jack
No - the Guitar out is a Dry Normal Mag PU Guitar Out - no COSM Modeling.
Roland learned their lesson, as the GR-55 Guitar Out when COSM Modeling Output is enabled is too noisy and useless for most high gain tube amps
By contrast the GP-10 main Outputs are  really clean, several GP-10 owners simply bypass all COSM amps and FX in GP-10 and use the GP-10 for guitar modeling only (as a Variax alternative) with excellent results.

Boss GP-10 represents a new lower price point for GK "VG-8" style Guitar / Alt tuning / Amp Modeling all in one

read the Roland GR-S/GR-D thread for our predictions back in 2012, many came true with the 2014 release of  Boss GP-10

THANK YOU so much Elantric!!!Far from being the Stop Gap product I feared it would be, The GP-10 IS A BREAKTHROUGH. I've been on this Midi/Synth Guitar quest for YEARS-I'm STUNNED at how much better this thing sounds than I thought it would!!! It's INCREDIBLE-tonally it LEAPS ahead of the GR55, at least preset-wise! It's cleaner sounding artifact-wise, than my VG99 - The noise-gating is VASTLY improved. This GP-10 NEEDS an FC-300 size Big Sister w hardware midi I/O, like TOMORROW. Like some others here, I'm tempted to get a 2nd one...!
Still wrapping my head around what I'm actually hearing...

I just did a pitch to midi test via Ableton Live and THIS IS THE BEST OUT OF THE BOX EXTERNAL TRACKING ROLAND HAS EVER ACHIEVED. NO TWEAKING.

This is with Parker w Ghost saddles
Need to run other tests, but WOW!

Elantric's Review>

Gear used for my Boss GP-10 Initial review

* 2012 Godin xtSA with RMC Piezo saddles and summer 2011 era Polydrive board.

* Planet Waves 10FT 13 pin Cable

* 2012 Apple MackBook Pro Retina w/ Logic X

* Audio-Technica ATH-M50 Headphones + USB Cable

* Galaxy Note 2 (used as MP3 player feeding GP-10 Aux Input

On Boss GP-10, I set the GK Type to "PIEZO_R" for the RMC Piezo Pus (and GK Phase = Reverse, and I assigned the GK3 S1 and S2 to COSM MODEL PU Up/Down - just like VG-99) ) on my Godin xtSA. And this thing rocks-  While there do exist occasional minor Piezo PU rumble anomalies here and there (which GK-3 users will never see ) [EDIT: since tamed by adjusting the PIEZO Low EQ Freq to -2dB) , I can report  the Boss GP-10 with GK Type set to Piezo_R' should work fine out of the box for owners of 2012 or newer Godin xtSA / LGSA / LGXT guitars. Older "Pre 2011" Godin /RMC models may require the external Sub Filter from Dr Wayne Joness, At present I have no access to early RMC PU guitar for trial with Boss GP-10.

I've been going through the GP-10  factory presets - and Im struck by the clarity, dynamic range and low noise. The COSM Modeling "bar has been raised to new heights in the Boss GP-10.
Using my Godin with RMC Piezo, I can report the Boss GP-10  has the Best Nylon model  Roland ever delivered to data ( blows away the VG-99 & GR-55  Nylon and Acoustic models)
All the above experience might be owed to the excellent RMC Pickup and Richard McClish's commitment to "'improving the breed ' in response to market demands

Bottom line the Boss GP-10 Definitely delivers pro performance.

Many of the Boss GP-10 presets repurpose CTL 1 as a Tap Tempo, and others use CTL 2 as a Infinite Hold.

And Eureka, the Boss GP-10 makes full use of the GK-3 three way select switch ( THANK YOU Roland!)

Patch changes occur swiftly and clean, zero gaps in any audio.

I fed MP3 backing tracks to the 3.5mm Aux In and no skips  or dropouts during any Boss GP-10 patch change which are almost seamless.

I installed the Boss GP10 USB Driver on my Mac - and after USB connection the Mac "sees" the Boss GP-10  as a multichannel Core Audio Interface with Eight Input Channels and Eight Output Channels.

In Logic-X  - I assigned the GP-10 to be the Audio I/O Interface with I/O Buffer size set to 128 samples (8.8ms Roundtrip Latency ) Excellent zero problems - and very clean  24 bit audio.

I made a test recording of all patches , then I rewound, and jammed along with the prior recording  while making lots of patch changes on the GP-10  - and experienced flawless audio - no drop outs. ( this is not possible with either GR-55 or VG-99, both mute the final analog output on every patch change - the GP-10 does not!

The GP-10 can become the central heart of  a small system  - the tone is very organic responsive and sounds very good.
Even the factory alt tunings for Slide use get into Sonny Landreth territory right out of the box  - can't do this with my VARIAX

I already ordered a spare Boss GP-10. - I love this thing!

Boss GP-10 Owners Manual Things to Know
* If your system is monaural, use only the L/MONO jack.

* If headphones are connected, this will automatically be "LINE/PHONES" regardless of the Output setting.

* When you connect a stereo-mini plug to this jack, the internal guitar amp simulator will be automatically on so that you can also enjoy the powerful
guitar sound with your headphones. In this case, the sound from OUTPUT jacks will have the same effect.

* To adjust the input level of the AUX IN jack, adjust the volume
of the connected device (audio player, etc.).

* Use only the included AC adaptor. Using any
other adaptor may cause overheating and malfunction.

* If you use a 1/4" phone plug to make input connections (and no GK Input), the modeling and alternate tuning functions will
not operate. Only the effect functions will operate.

* After you've made connections correctly, be sure to turn on the power in the order of the GP-10 first, and then the
connected system. Powering-on in the incorrect order may cause malfunctions or damage. When turning the power off,
power-off the connected system first, and then the GP-10.

* This unit is equipped with a protection circuit. A brief interval (a few seconds) after turning the unit on is required before it will
operate normally.

* Before turning the unit on/off, always be sure to turn the volume down. Even with the volume turned down, you might
hear some sound when switching the unit on/off. However, this is normal and does not indicate a malfunction.

* Any settings that you are in the process of editing will be lost when the power is turned off. If you have any settings that you want to keep, you should save them beforehand.

* To restore power, turn the power on again.

* Use only the specified expression pedal (Roland EV-5, FL-500H/L; sold separately).
By connecting any other expression pedals, you risk causing malfunction and/or damage to the unit.

* [<] + [>] mean that you should "hold down [<] and press [>]."

* A piezo pickup is a type of pickup that is mounted on the bridge of the guitar, and uses a piezoelectric element to detect the vibrations of the strings.

* Choose "GK-2A" if you're using a commercially available guitar that's equipped with GK pickup.

* This parameter is not shown if you select "GC-1" as the pickup type.

* If the pickup type is set to "GC-1" or one of the piezotype pickups, [GK SCALE] setting  is not necessary.

* GK Sens - Play the 6th string as strongly as you ever expect to play it in actual performance, and
use the [VALUE] knob to adjust the sensitivity as high as possible without allowing the meter to reach the full-scale position.

* If the level meter reaches the full-scale position, the level is excessive. Lower the sensitivity.

* Depending on the guitar you're using, the level meter might reach full-scale even if the sensitivity is at minimum. If this is the case, adjust the distance between the
divided pickup and the string so it's somewhat greater than the recommendation.

* The explanations in this manual include illustrations that depict what should typically be shown by the display. Note, however, that your unit
may incorporate a newer, enhanced version of the system (e.g., includes newer sounds), so what you actually see in the display may not always
match what appears in the manual.

Boss GP-10 Owners Manual Tips:
* By default, the [CTL 1] and [CTL 2] pedals control a function that's assigned by each patch.
* You are free to assign the pedals to other functions if you like.

"Pedal and Switch Settings for Each Patch (Ctl: )" (p. 11),
For each patch, you can individually specify the functions that are assigned to the [CTL 1], [CTL2]
pedals and the expression pedals.
If you want these pedals to always have the same function regardless of the patch, you can specify
this using the system setting "Sys: Controller" (p. 13).

* This is available if the Sys: Controller (p. 13) is set to "PATCH SETTING."

"System Settings for the Pedals and Switches (SysCtl: )" (p. 13)

Specifies the functions that are assigned to the [CTL 1], [CTL 2] pedals and the expression pedal.
With the factory settings, "PATCH SETTING" is selected; each pedal is assigned the most suitable
function for that patch. If you want the pedals to operate in the same way regardless of which patch
is selected, choose something other than "PATCH SETTING."

GP-10 assign  [toggle] + FS-6  [Latch] = double latching, pedal requires 2 presses to do one function (effect on/off)
GP-10 assign  [toggle] + FS-6  [Moment] = press once to toggle effect on/off, pedal led only lights while held down
GP-10 assign  [moment] + FS-6  [moment] = effect only on while pedal held down, pedal led only on while held down
GP-10 assign  [moment] + FS-6  [Latch] = press once to toggle effect on/off, pedal led toggles with effect status

Press the [H] pedals simultaneously to enter Tuner mode.
* To achieve the alternate tunings as described on the tuning control, tune your guitar to correct standard tuning (E A D G B E).
* If you want to tune GUITAR IN (the normal guitar input), disconnect the GK IN connection.
* You can also enter Tuner mode by pressing the [>] button in the Play screen.

* When you operate the expression pedal, please be careful not to get your fingers pinched between the
movable part and the panel. In places where small children are present, make sure that an adult provides
supervision and guidance.

* If the Modeling Type is "SYNTH" or "POLY FX," the Alternate Tuning or 12-String Guitar function
cannot be used.

* Press the [MODELING/ALT TUNE] button to edit. The parameters shown depend on the modeling type you've selected.

* PU Select - Choose virtual PU depending on COSM model (Not available if Fretless COSM model is selected)
Fretless Tone Type *2 Selects the fretless tone type.
Fretless Sens *2 This controls the input sensitivity of the FRETLESS.
Fretless Depth *2 This controls the rate of the FRETLESS harmonics.
Fretless Attack *2 Adjusts the attack of the FRETLESS picking sound.
Fretless Resonance *2 Adds a characteristically resonant quality to the FRETLESS sound.
Fretless Direct Level *2 Adjusts the volume of the direct sound.

* Acoustic COSM - Reso Acoustic Sustain -
You can specify how the resulting volume will be affected by changes
(loud/soft dynamics) in the guitar string vibrations that are input.
Adjusts the range (time) over which low-level signals are boosted. Larger
values will result in longer sustain.

* Bass COSM - (JB) Jazz Bass
Rear Volume *1 Volume of the rear pickup
Front Volume *1 Volume of the front pickup

* Bass COSM - Fretless Bass
Fretless Bass Sens  -  This controls the input sensitivity.
Fretless Bass Depth  -  This controls the rate of the harmonics.
Fretless Bass Attack -  Adjusts the attack of the picking sound.
Fretless Bass Resonance -  Adds a characteristically resonant quality to the sound.
Fretless Bass Direct Level -  Adjusts the volume of the direct sound.

* Pitch (SW)Switch - This setting allows you to switch A, B and OFF the pitch shift, which
enables the pitch of the HEXA-VCO sound to shift in response
   * PITCH SHIFT is applied only to the HEXA-VCO, not the HEXADISTORTION.
Set MODE to VCO or V+D when using the pitch shift function.

* Porta Mode Selects how portamento is applied.

QuoteThis actually transitioned nicely into the other live control topic I've been thinking about - what kind of controller to plug into the 1/4" jack on the back.  Guess the options are an FS-6, FS-7, or an EV-5 (hoping an M-Audio expression pedal I have lying around will work in lieu of an EV-5).

On many Roland gear ( like the Boss GP-10) there is no "calibration" procedure for the external pedal.

The M-Audio EXP-1 - ( using any available switch position on it's underside switch ) does not work well  - the Roland units expect the same 10K Taper Control pot as the genuine Roland EV-5.

Ive gone back to using my official Roland EV-5 expression pedal with Boss GP-10  - because its the most uniform and smoothest when controlling GP-10 FX sing Control Assignments.

There used to be an old external pedal mod which began with the Boss GT-5 (circa 1996) where folks were able to connect both an Expression Pedal AND a pair of Momentary switches, to one jack - yes the typical "EXP2 / CTL 3,4" TRS Jack found on most Boss GT-x pedals and now the Boss GP-10 , using the Control Assignments per patch  - allowed some patches to use an Expression pedal, while other patches employed CTL2, CTL 3 for Reverb / Delay on / off - which offered far more control options on a patch by patch basis - just need to dive into the archive and locate that circuit and use it on Boss GP-10

http://www.ashbass.com/AshBassGuitar/Zoom/index.html?Yadapter.html

It is important to note that the footswitch will only work when the expression pedal is all the way toe-down.

o Folks are using GP-10 for guitar modeling alone, and feeding separate MFX for amp modeling (GT-1,Kemper,Axe-FX, etc)

Roland / Boss VG/GT/GR gear has implemented Control Assigns for 25 years

To get the most from the latest Roland gear - Learn how to use those Control concepts from the start by reading the numerous user created docs for the earlier Roland units here:

Quotef you want to obtain more incite and better explanations of how Roland gear works - review the OWNERS MANUALS for the earliest examples of current gear.

For example the GR-55 and GP-10 Owners Manuals sinply list all the various FX functions and Control Features, but totally omit any explanation or examples of how to actually use these controls or how they interact.

Here is the 1999 Roland VG-88 Owners Manual  - ITS A MUST READ!  - it lays a better foundation with explanations of how the Internal Wave Pedal and Expression Pedal Min/Max FX range,Assign Hold, etc,  work.

Many Boss GP-10 users may observe that the GP-10 GTR-MIDI setup box in Boss Tone Studio includes controls like "Low Velocity Cut", and "Play Feel"

There is a Wealth of Information within the many User created GR-55 Setup Docs which explains in depth how to set ""Velocity ", "Play Feel" , etc all GR-55 ( and Boss GP-10)  Owners need to read at link below:

QuoteDescription: I've been compiling notes on GR-55 setups, my own hopefully practical spin on how to set things up.

The information in the GR-55 manual regarding setting up the unit is pretty minimal.   This doc is meant to supplement the manual with real-world experience.  I wanted to pull together all of the best info I could find in one place, instead of scattered over a bunch of posts in a bunch of forums.

And, very specifically, I wanted a "cook book", i.e., a specific set of steps to follow to make a setting properly and consistently.

I hope you find this helpful.   Feedback welcome.

9/14, More readable .pdf uploaded.  Changed nuance setting descriptions.

Setup-Nuance - will help you confirm your Nuance is configured well.  If your Nuance is configured correctly, finger plucking will generate bell sounds, and pick usage will generate a steel string guitar sound.
Setup-Velocity - will help you confirm your Velocity is configured well.  It is built from a basic electric piano tone, which varies its timbre with your picking velocity.  Low velocity (picking softly) yields that sweet e-piano tone, almost like a bell.  High velocity (harder picking) yields the growling e-piano tone normally associated with banging hard on the keys.  If you cannot get BOTH tones from your GR-55 depending on how hard you pick, you have probably squished your "Velocity Dynamics" setting too low, and as a result, are not getting all the intended subtleties from the GR-55's tones.

Many things appear as possible work flows with Roland VG-99, GR-55, yet in practice there are many "gotcha's.

The big problem is anytime there is a patch change, this takes a finite amount of time for the DSP to load a new algorithm. it also results in brief audio noise apparent at the output stage D/A  during this transition to a new patch. In order to manage this, Roland always employs hardware muting transistors on the final audio output stage, to briefly MUTE the audio, to mask the DSP reload noise.

So the big Problem in the past has been if you intend to use your Roland VGuitar hardware as your Audio playback USB Audio Interface for your computer running Ableton or Mainstage, or other DAW at a live show - you will suffer a brief drop out (Mute) of All audio anytime there is a Patch change event that occurs mid song. This is the main reason you dont see many  Roland VG-99, GR-55's used as USB Audio interfaces for live shows.

Its likely the Boss GP-10 share this same architecture described above - so that presents major problems for Windows users who typically rely on ASIO Audio drivers - which typically can not support multiple ASIO audio hardware interfaces.

Mac users with OSX can create an Aggregate Audio Device - so with a Mac, it should be relatively easy to use GP-10 as Audio Input> then process 6 audio streams> but output them to a separate Audio interface that will not Mute during each patch change.

EDIT: I can confirm the GP-10 is unique and is the first GK13 pin product with built in Audio interface that does NOT Mute all audio during patch changes!  ( Hooray!

Okay apparently on GP-10 when you change "String Ch" (System Settings) the GP-10 also looks for incoming MIDI CC# Data on that channel as well. For simplicity I just set it back to 1 and it started working again. I will have to deal with that in Logic (easy using environment) and MainStage (completely different interface for same environment! - gonna have to read up on that).

Anyway on my GP-10, incoming MIDI CC data stopped working in the Assigns when "String Ch" mismatched the MIDI channel on my foot controller (Roland GFC-50, very non-flexible). Program Change never stopped working -

There's an old trick for achieving better GR300 COSM  sound on VG-99 (works for GR-55 and GP-10 too)

Read here:

Optimal GK TYPE Hex Pickup Settings.
https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=1060.0
Quote# Hot Tip -  However note that Many VG-99 Patches may work better with a hotter string sensitivity. Often the GR300 emulation functions, or two handed EVH tapping styles respond better with a hotter "GK String Sensitivity" than "20-30" -  - more like "80-100"  - so the trick is  USE A DIFFERENT GK PU Memory Slot, and assign a different GK String Sensitivity setting for each GK PU memory slot. Use those PIEZO PU type memory slots  (even with a GK-3) and program several unique string sensitivities for the same guitar add 2 band EQ to taste.
The GK Settings can be specified individually for each PATCH. Use this setting when switching among multiple STRING SENSITIVITY SETTINGS as you perform. As with everything on the VG-99 - Adjust to taste! There is no wrong way - if it sounds good it is good.

GP-10  - too trebly?

Quote
Update. I seem to have gotten a handle on my trebly ice pick tone with the GP-10 by correcting the setting for the GK-3 (instead of Piezo) to GK-3. It appears to have been set to Piezo for one of my Piezo guitars. Spending more time with the unit has refreshed my appreciation for it though the complexities and possibilities are daunting.

I'm using these settings below with much success using my 2012 Godin xTSA (RMC) and stock GR-55 (rev 1.50 firmware ) and Boss GP-10

Thanks Jim Williams!

On both my xTSA'a - the COSM Modleling sounds most excellent .

This is AFTER I follow Jim Williams Piezo Setup.

In System, Set the GK PU type to:
PU type ;  PIEZO R
Scale :  ST
PU phase : NORMAL
PU direction : NORMAL
S1/S2 position : NORMAL
NORM PU gain : 0 dB
PIEZO TONE  LOW  :    -2
PIEZO TONE HIGH  :   -3

"DIS"
10.0 mm all strings (does not matter GR-55 ignores this for all Piezo PU selections)

"SEN"
Set the sensitivities for all strings to "50" average (+/-5  - that is all my strings have sensitivity set in the range between 45-55 .
(Note: Godin's older than 2012, might work better with Sensitivity set to "0")

"VEL"
Velocity Dynamics :  2
Play-Feel         :  2 (may vary depending on how you play synth tones)
Low-Velocity Cut  :  8-9

"NUA"
Nuance Dynamics   :  4
Nuance Trim       :  4

"DOW"
Shift   :   0
===============

Be sure you are using Headphones when forming opinion on the sounds  / patches of your Roland gear.!!

Ive voiced prolifically on this forum my preference for GK-3 type pickups for use with Roland COSM Modeling systems , but there have been some minor incremental developments  / improvements in the RMC electronics over the years. I admit bulk of my prior opinions on RMC piezo pickups were based upon a 1998 era RMC Piezo Polydrive 1 install in a Les Paul feeding  a Roland VG-8, where I could always "hear" the underlying RMC piezo characteristics in the VG-8's output, regardless of any patch or tweaking.

In contrast, the GR-55 with firmware 1.50 , and using Jim Williams Piezo setup suggestions

https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=3965.msg53317#msg53317

and string sensitivity at an average of "50" for all strings with this new Godin xTSA - the GR-55 sounds wonderful. True the GR-300 preset still has low frequency handling noises and random noises, (the optional RMC OPT-01 sub filter board should cure this) -

In context when using only the 13 pin cable. The Godin's Normal Mag PU"S (Or Mono Piezo Signal  - depending on the guitar volume control settings) will  feed pin #7, on the 13 pin cable where the GR-55 can act as a "GT-100 like" COSM Amp Modeler. All audio output occurs at the GR-55 Stereo Output jacks.
My first order of business was modifying ALL GR-55 User Presets to enable the use of the Godin's Normal pickups and enable use of the three way "Guitar / Mix / Synth" switch on the Godin - and for me, thats where the magic of the GR-55 happens. Many factory GR-55 patches become 300% more useful.
For example, one GR-55 Xylophone patch had a great multitap delay that when used with only straight normal pickups becomes a wonderful world of great tone where the Roland COSM Amp modelling and effects can be appreciated.

I do think the only way to go with the GR-55 is to use an external stereo Volume pedal, and then dedicate the on board GR-55 Expression pedal to "pan / morph" different effects / tones within a single patch. I also find that the xTSA and RMC Piezos and GR-55's Acoustic Modeling sounds very excellent !

But I also notice that with little effort, palm Muting IS possible and get very close to the sound of the Normal pickups.  Finally having a working  "Guitar / Mix / Synth" switch on the Godin  allows instant verification and reality check on the COSM Guitar Modeling and for me opens up worlds of usefulness for the GR-55.
