I'm just starting to bring my 128GB iPad Air into my live mix. I could add an iPhone 5s to my rig if I needed to but I'd prefer not to do that unless it's really necessary. Currently my guitar/amp modeling and loops come from a GP-10 feeding into a VL3. I bring the iPad stream out via the 3.5mm jack into the VL3. MIDI control is via a SoftStep 2 into an iConnectMIDI4+ powering the iPad. So far I'm concentrating on Sampletank, Z3TA+, and SetlistMaker. I'm hoping those three apps will run concurrently, reliably provide the synths/samples I need, and I'll add Audiobus if needed. I have other apps such as Bias and Jamup but I've no plans to incorporate them at this time as I want to keep things relatively simple at first. So what say you more experienced users? Will these three apps play well live and provide what I need? Will I need a dedicated drum machine app? Will I be able to add backing tracks from my music library? Am I missing something important?

I suggest follow others efforts and results in this thread here:

Audiobus for IPAD - app-to-app audio streaming for iOS

Myself - for live gigs I run One app at a time on my iPad(mostly its FTP driving IK Sampletank for IOS) , and if I have a gig where I need Setlistmaker, then I  Run that app on a separate dedicated iPad.

I always have trouble running multiple apps simultaneously on iPad , and luckily I can remember most chord changes and lyrics  - I try to avoid looking for all the world like like I'm trying to check my email and bid on an ebay auction mid solo at a paying gig, should my iPad lock up mid gig from being chocked to death by running 4 apps at once.

@I always have trouble running multiple apps simultaneously on iPad

Well now that's disappointing news. I read your iPad Air review awhile back and you had something like 3 big synths running at under 50% cpu utilization; looked like it should be solid.  If I can only get one app to run stably on IOS then that's a big push towards a laptop or some other more powerful solution. Thanks for the feedback and I'll check out that link.

That was not my review - it was a  re-posted  review by John Walden @ musicappBlog

sugest re-read:

For reference if you see a post I make which at the top includes a URL link and all words are in "italics" - its simply me re-posting the work of others as a news  / info  / shared item - and I always credit the original author and source!

I often avoid using the forum "quote box" , and use italics instead because URL photo links can NOT be included within the  "quote box" here on our forum.

Yup, I completely misremembered your position stated in that thread. Thanks for correcting my memory on that. I think I'll do some testing just to see what I can accomplish as is and see if I think it's worth it to add my iPhone.

Edit: Set List Maker replacement thread.

We experience occasional brown outs in our area.

Would this unit be a better choice for us for protecting PC's, TV's, V-gear?

The use of a multi outlet UPC has become untenable in my rig with the equipment I selected and my desire to pack it all into a trunk for mobility. You'd think a trunk would provide all sorts of room but it turns out the tolerances are quite tight and I've simply no room for that type of UPC if I wish to leave everything plugged in all the time. I'll be looking at something to use near the wall outlet instead and a bit of research shows me such units exist but I've more pressing concerns and so that's slipped to the back burner for the moment.

Pig in a poke?

I looked around for a good quality right angle to straight xlr cable and found none locally. Popped onto ebay and found a $30.00 Mogami cable that seemed to fit the bill and it just arrived. The cable is half the diameter of any xlr cable I've ever seen and the cable itself is listed as Mogami part no. 2552. and has Neutric connectors.

http://www.mogamicable.com/category/bulk/microphone/high_performance/

I don't mind the smaller diameter since it'll be feeding my headset and lighter isn't a bad thing if it's a quality cable. In fairness they listed exactly what cable it was and it just never occurred to me to look up the Mogami part number.

MOGAMI 2552 SUPERFLEX BALANCED MICROPHONE CABLE 90º ANGLE XLR MALE NEUTRIK 10'

Think it'll hold up and provide a quality mic signal?

What is the application?

What Length?

Pay attention to gender of the right angle - I assume you want right angle female to male straight ?

What length?

And note many Right Angle XLRF plugs will not connect to stage gear if the XLR Out on the floor gear is in the wrong direction

It's a 10' cable with the correct female/male config and will be connecting my mic.

http://www.dpamicrophones.com/en/products.aspx?c=item&category=269&item=24062

I just assumed that since it was a Mogami cable it'd be high quality and I'm thinking this cable is from Mogami's "value" line. (which I didn't realize even existed)

Years ago, Hosa Cables used to be junk - but today they are the Neutrik Plug Distributor and some models are decent  - so the rules have changed!

Fortunately I know how to solder - so I would order the parts and build my own custom cable with Nuetrik plugs and

Nice to know that about the Hosa cables which I always assumed were low end. Even more of a screw up the prongs aren't lined up properly on the Neutric nc*mrx connector. Pretty much what you just warned me about... I guess I'll look up the connector and see if it's adjustable or just modify my pedal board a bit if I decide to keep the cable. Looks like it's time to buy a reel of cable and free myself from my corporate masters.

P.S. Time to head to table and drown my sorrows in grub and grog...

P.P.S. It turns out the Neutric NC*MRX right angle connector can be oriented up to 90° and so I've got it working in my rig. Durability might be an issue in the long run but for now it's working and the lighter weight of the cable is somewhat of a plus being that it is attached to a headset mic with the xlr junction hanging off my belt.

Dear Old Wooden Marine Band harps;

Thanks for over 30 years of faithful service. You always had more to offer than I was able to use but even so the time has come.

You just don't sound like you used to and it's time for a change...

Of course I still love you...

I never said it was your fault for getting soaked in beer over night...

I'm sure you and the grandkids will get along just fine...

I'm looking for backing tracks to add to my Sonar X3 library which seems to be just a small collection of mp3s. Any recommendations as to the location of a repository of decent backing tracks for different genres? I trust the opinions of forum members much more than whatever google would decide to throw my way.

I am sick of the music police.

I use Jimmy Mcarteys Drum and Bass backing tracks. They cost a little more but are recorded accurately by one of the best session drummers ever. He will even make custom stuff for you.

All the other band in a box stuff sounds plasticy to me.

Thanks for the link Steve. I'll go take a look. I'm mostly looking for generic loops to practice with rather than covers so we'll see what Mr. Mcartey has to offer.

I looked over the Mcartey site and it's a bit barebones for my needs. Master Toby is light years ahead of me and can flesh it all out just fine on his own. I need a tad bit more help if I want something to practice with.

Do you have an iPad?  If so, I think the Session Band apps are definitely worth checking out for this purpose.  Keep an eye on them, they tend to run "flash sales" where you can get them for $0.99 each.

The original one has all kinds of genres from metal to EDM, and then there are a bunch of genre specific ones, e.g. Session Band Blues, Rock, Jazz, etc.

These apps are nice because they give you a quite a few styles to pick from in the genre, and then you can easily build you own chord progression, so you can jam over whatever key/progression you want.  Or even easier, pick one of the many pre-made songs and transpose it into whatever key.  You can also pick a bunch of different drum fill patterns and mix the parts.  They're all real recorded instruments so they sound good too.

Cool practice/songwriting tool, and especially nice if you can hit them on a flash sale.

Thanks SuperNiCd!

I am still looking for the right match although that guitarmasterclass listed above might be just about right for me to look into to up my game as far as guitar skills go. I'll dive in and take a look at that sessionband suggestion. It looks a fair bit less pricey than band in a box which is another bit of promising software I ran into.

I have been tempted by BiaB a few times too. :)  Ultimately wasn't sure I'd actually use it enough to justify the cost.  Getting these on sale @ $0.99, they are pretty guilt free.
