I was surprised to see there was some recent activity on this forum!  I'm trying to get a few sounds to perform Gina Vanelli's Black Cars song but having hell of a time wrapping my head around it.  ???

Anyone have something already or perhaps do some of the bigger brains have clue what sounds I could leverage from the GR-55 to start building my own?

As always, any and all assistance is greatly appreciated!

there are many parts going on in this song you have to use your ear to separate them. the one in the intro is very percussive and that will give a jump off point for making that sound. Once you can do this for all the sounds then you can start combining them into patches.

Break it down:
Heavily gated drums.
Rhythmic synth sounds could be done via slicer?
Synth lead/melody very digital sounding and deceptive:
It has a Farfisa type organ aspect, think (Radio Radio by Elvis Costello but more synth-like or like Switchin' to Glide by the Kings)
Clean tone guitar, chorus with compression with no reverb or delay.
DX7 electric piano in there too.
Bass guitar is basically a bass guitar.
This could have been an advertisement for 80s studio sounds.

Thanks guys.  Yeah i'm struggling with which sounds to use.  This was a showcase of the DX7 back in the day.  I feel like an effected wurlitzer (or similar e-piano) as a base with high octave bells on top would be good for the percussive part.  I could then kick the bells on and off with the ctrl pedal to swap from verse to chorus.

There's a third sound in there that I can't seem to figure out though...

Another way to get a glassy DX7 type electric piano on the GR stuff (VG too) try this:

-classical guitar with chorus and detune it slightly below guitar range with a little reverb.

Example with VG-99:

The "electric piano" is a detuned classical guitar with chorus.

I second that... where can I find that patch?  That's a great one whether for Gino Vanelli or not ;)

adrenachrone

Apologies - just realized you created the patch for the 99 not the 55.  Doh! ;)

Perhaps you could export the settings and share those?

alexmcginness

If the 99 patch for that is available could you post it please. Thanks.

Not sure I have the exact patch anymore but I believe it was
Channel A was a Synth of model type Organ set to tuning +7 for all strings.

Then the classical guitar (Channel B) was -12 on the low E and everything else normal.
Then the classical guitar signal path was set to 2x2 chorus (modulation) then chorus (Stereo 2), Delay (Stereo), and hall reverb.

I'll see if I can dig up my patch archives if I have the exact patch, I've got hundreds I've programmed.
