what are the specs of the on board computer/dsp used in the variax?
are there any issues with RFI or EMI creating unwanted noise in the audio signal or does Line 6 do a good job of isolating or shielding this?

Regarding the electronics - The 600 shares the same guts as the 300.

Pics comparing the 500 to the 300 electronics are at Nathan Shane's www.Vettaville.com

All Variax's (pre Tyler) use the same Motorola / Freescale DSP56367 DSP Engine. The A/D's are all 24bit/96kHz AKM type. Though the specific configuration of the A/D's in the 700/500 type guts are different than the 600/300 type guts. The 500/700 use three separate A/D converter IC's - each handle a specific pair of strings. The 600/300 is a smaller PCB board and uses two seperate A/D converter IC's - one A/D converts the Hi E and B strings while the other A/D is 4 channel type that handles all the remaining strings.

QuoteDoes this translate to any audible differences between different Variax models (300/500/600/700)?

I understand the initial production run of the Variax 300 had some issues - Feedback at High Gain, and unreliable firmware update problems. But these issues are now resolved,

Of course the latest Tyler Variax's use a faster DSP and have improved modeling and much improved Alt Tuning ( fewer warbles)

Mixing analog electronics with EMI and RFI is always a battle  - Line6 does an average job.
