I haven't tested extensively as I'm in the process of moving, but it looks like I can get rid of my old win7 laptop!
VG-99 was detected and the librarian and editor both populated with my patches so I'm not sure what could go wrong from here... I didn't even tweak anything, I already had wine for some games or something lol

Trying to replicate and I have some questions :
(Ubuntu 20.04 LTS and Wine 5 here)

1. VG99 Editor Librarian installed fine and runs
2. I cannot connect to VG99 so...

A) Do you need to install drivers? (XP, Win7 and Vista does not install)
B) Do you use Virtual Box or native installation?
C) Should the VG99 be connected w/o drivers outside VM?

Thanks a lot
Cheers

To connect to the the VG-99 Editor, the VG-99 must use "USB Advanced Mode"   which is not USB Class Compliant - and requires USB drivers

( no experience here)
But you could use a third party USB <> MIDI cable ( Roland UM-ONE MKII)
that might allow you to use WINE

Thanks !
The OP did not provide info but I guess it was using a midi cable as I was not able to install driver under wine. I need to investigate. I was good at those things back in the day... need to remember.

Hey sorry, i moved and a lot happened lol I'm just using usb A (no midi) completely native in Arch Linux, i had previously installed whatever usb drivers i needed to use my usb mixer in reaper (and all audio related drivers, alsa, pulse audio etc.) I've never used a vm. The vg99 also works as an audio interface in reaper through the same usb setup and i can pump my laptops audio back through it to my PA system which is cool.

A 3rd party alternative is VG-99FxFloorBoard editor, which has a native Linux version, so no need for using WINE.

Which USB driver is required on Linux?
Or do you advise place VG-99 in USB Standard Mode to work on Linux

Linux ALSA has general Roland/Boss drivers built in, so on some devices, USB seen as Audio 24bit 2 or 4 channel, and MIDI 1, 2 or ,3 logical devices, and are available to the operating system and apps requiring those services.
The VG-99FxFloorBoard editor can also operate with an external USB-Midi device adapter too.
