http://www.musicradar.com/news/guit...e-app-compatible-bluetooth-guitar-amps-644708
NAMM 2017: Fender made its first stride into the world of apps with Tune earlier this year, and stated it would be the first of many - now, it appears the apps will interact with a new Bluetooth-compatible amp in the new year.

In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Fender chief exec Andy Mooney let slip that the company's new amp will connect to apps wirelessly via Bluetooth, allowing players to alter and share tones.

Fender is also planning a tone app that enables an amp to emulate the sounds of famous guitarists
Along with the amp, which will be available next year (NAMM, anyone?), Fender is also planning a practice-room app that can teach guitarists to play any song in their music library, as well as a tone app that enables an amp to emulate the sounds of famous guitarists.

The Big F's amp plans will put it in line with the likes of Line 6, Marshall and Hughes & Kettner, but those apps could be the real game-changer here, particularly if the amp integration is smoothly implemented.

Something else we learned in the interview is that Fender's best-selling guitar finish in spring was Metallic Blue, and the company is looking to collaborate with artists to create new styles - that's a far cry from its three most popular finishes, which were revealed in July.

Fender unveils wi-fi, Bluetooth-enabled Mustang GT guitar amps - world-first hands-on video demo
By Michael Astley-Brown (Total Guitar) 5 hours agoGuitars

Combos sync with Fender Tone amp for preset sharing and music streaming

They've been a short while coming, but Fender has announced details on its Mustang GT guitar amp range, which packs both Bluetooth and wi-fi connectivity - and we have a world-first hands-on video demo.

The amps integrate with Fender's new Tone app (available on iOS and Android), which allow guitarists to create and share presets, as well as wirelessly alter amp parameters.

Three combos are available: the tabletop 2x6" GT 40, and the gig-ready 1x12" GT 100 and 2x12" GT 200, all of which feature Celestion full-range Special Design speakers.

Fender's Generation Three modelling is onboard, and serves up 21 amp models, as well as over 45 effects and a fully functional looper, controlled via a footswitch that's available separately (and included with the GT 200).

Further connectivity is offered around the rear of the amps, which all feature USB recording functionality, while the 100 and 200 pack XLR line outs and effects loops.

Guitarists can create setlists from custom preset groups, while Fender has also included tone tips, offering advice for beginners on amps, effects and signal chain basics.

What's more, The Big F has secured artists as diverse as Grimes, Joe Bonamassa, Josh Klinghoffer and Scott Ian to create playlists for the amps, and we can expect plenty more to come.

Fender's Mustang GT amps are available right now at the following price points:

Mustang GT 40 £195/$249
Mustang GT 100 £325/$399
Mustang GT 200 £440/$599

While competition is fierce in the universe of entry-level modeling amps, Fender will have put an end to finally upgrading its Mustang with the all-new GT40, GT100, and GT200 models.
It must be said that Vox, Line 6, Boss, and Marshall - to name but a few - have been keen on the market by selling more or less regularly comprehensive tools. But it seems that nothing serves to run, and that it is especially necessary to start from scratch. Will the saying be confirmed? Audiofanzine offers you a test of the three new Mustang amps from Fender, exclusively for France and on the day of the official announcement of their release.

A question of size
20170501 011417.JPG
The new Fender Mustang range consists of three fully digital models featuring the same modeling and functions. The GT40, GT100, and GT200 combines differ, however, in terms of power, format, front buttons, available I / O, and built-in speakers.

The GT40 is particularly compact with its dimensions of 27.9 x 31 x 45.72 cm and its weight of 7.7 kg, displaces a power of 40 watts thanks to two full-range speakers of 6 ". It has an auxiliary input, a headphone output, and a USB connection, just like his colleagues. Conversely, you will find a little less adjustment on this model since its upper slice presents settings of gain, volume, treble, bass, master volume, and 7 buttons embellished with a knob rotating notched and clickable To navigate in the heart of the amp. Note also that the cabinet of this model is in agglomerate.

The GT100 has a power of 100 watts and uses a unique 12 "Celestion Special Design speaker. As a result, its dimensions and weight are somewhat larger: 44.5 x 52.1 x 25.4 cm and 9.97 kg. The GT200 combines a power of 200 watts with two Celestion Special Design 12 "speakers. In addition, it measures 53.08 x 64.77 x 25.4 cm, and weighs 15.7 kg. Apart from that, these two amps are rigorously the same. In addition to the buttons already present on the GT40 you will find settings dedicated to the mediums and the reverb, and the two speakers are more classical since they are in light plywood. They are distinguished by the presence of two loops of effects and a direct stereo output in XLR.

Regarding the look of amps, the difference is radical compared to the older generations of Mustang. The aesthetic is more modern, with edges a little more rounded, and a completely black finish mixing vinyl and canvas to protect the speakers. The plastic knobs are also of great sobriety and stick well to the overall spirit of the machines. As you can see, the dimensions and weights are very reasonable, especially for the GT40. Focusing on width at height, the small combo evokes even a Bluetooth speaker as it is compact. The aesthetics adopted by Fender undoubtedly flies on the latter, but perhaps a little less with the bigger models that will easily be identified as consumer digital devices.

Faster, higher, stronger
The three Mustang GT combos feature 21 amp models and 47 effects. This is more than on previous generations, and algorithms have been reworked or added. Here is the list of modelizations:

In addition, a chromatic tuner, a looper, and a Tap Tempo have been integrated. Attention, to have access to the looper it is necessary to use the new footswitch Fender MGT-4 or a former selector Mustang. It is also possible to connect the expression pedal EXP1 to control
Certain effects. In short, the Mustang GTs are placed directly in the top of the basket in terms of functions. And that's not all, since the three combos are the very first connected wifi amps in history! No more unbearable transfers by USB to update the machines, they now have direct access to the internet. Do you want more ? The Mustang GT also have Bluetooth, and are controllable via an application. And the amp still has some surprises ...

Ready, set, go !
Digital amps require, navigation is done through a screen. From the outset, it is necessary to note that Fender strikes hard with a LCD of a reasonable size and color. Its resolution is good, and it is ideally placed to be easily visible. In the age of the smartphone and the king screen, Fender is the first in this price range to bet on a screen worthy of the name, and it's a real plus. In terms of ergonomics, the screen is divided into three layers superimposed horizontally. Three large buttons on the right side of the screen allow you to switch from one layer to another in a snap. The selected section is always highlighted, so it is impossible to get lost. The whole thing is incredibly intuitive, and does not even require a manual. It's complete is easy at a time.

Basic, the first layer dedicated to the presets is active. Going to the left or to the right with the clickable rotary knob, one passes from one favorites to another.

The second layer corresponds to the sound chain. It shows the type of amp selected, and any effects. Again, it's the rotary knob that allows you to add or modify modeling, and then place it where you want it in the string. This last point is very interesting, since one can really shape its sound by placing the effects before or after the amp, in the order that one wishes. The maximum number of effects is not defined, but little by little certain effects become inaccessible when you want to add them, until there is no possibility. This limit certainly corresponds to the capacity of the DSP. Count about 5 to 7 simultaneous effects. In addition, one can very well accumulate several delays or several overdrive unlike many amps of this type.

Finally, the third layer corresponds to the settings and parameters of the modeling selected on the second layer. Thus, if the modeling is an amp, we will find some of the settings available via the physical knobs (Gain, Volume, Treble, etc.), but also additional parameters depending on the type of amp: selector bright, noise gate, Setting BIAS, or even choosing the cabinet! Here is the list of modelizations available:

In addition, it is possible to disable the simu of HP, which can be interesting to apply its own IR when using the USB or XLR outputs.

20170501 011446.JPG
In addition to the large rotary knob and three buttons dedicated to different layers, four smaller buttons complete the front of the amp. The first, called FX, allows to "bypass" all the effects of a blow. The second, the Save button, saves the selected parameters at any time. It is possible to replace the active preset, rename it, or create a brand new one in a new location. The third button is a tap tempo that lights up in rhythm when a time-based effect is activated. The Menu button, on the other hand, opens the global settings of the amp. Here is the list of the most interesting parameters:

Setlist: allows to create a group of presets to facilitate the navigation in the perspective of a live for example
Quick Access: allows you to choose 3 presets that can be accessed at any time via this menu or via the footswitch
Tuner: chromatic tuner
Global EQ: offers a choice of 4 global EQ modes (Flat, Bright Boost, Bright Cut, and Low Cut)
EXP-1 : allows to set the EXP-1 expression pedal and especially its stroke, for all the presets or for each preset independently
The Setlist system is a great idea to avoid getting lost when a complete set is mounted. The same applies to the Quick Access, which ensures that you can find your favorite three presets at any time, including the MGT-4 footswitch. Finally, the tuner will accompany you with a needle and small numbers indicating whether to tighten or relax the string. It is accurate, but there are regular stalls and the needle panics by indicating other notes before returning to the true note. Hopefully a firmware update will quickly fix this. Finally, note that the inscriptions of the four buttons mentioned above already tend to fade while the amp is new. Fortunately, they light up when they are active.

Solid Snake
It is also possible to navigate through the amp via a footswitch, the MGT4. Specially designed for the Mustang GT, it is marketed at a price of 71 €, but is included in the pack of the GT200 . It takes up most of the features of the footswitch 4 buttons of the previous generation of Mustang. This is compatible with the new Mustang (display problems may occur), but you will not be able to use the Looper function.

The MGT4 is a bit disappointing. The tap tempo function can not be managed, and navigation between the many presets can be tedious. It is however necessary to use the looper, and it then becomes a huge asset. In addition, it is possible to activate one of the three favorite presets selected in the Quick Access menu at any time, which can be useful. Finally, the effects of a preset can be individually activated or not. In view of the tariff, the investment can therefore be clearly worth the blow.

The Internets
Forget all that we have seen since the beginning of this test. Exit the knobs, the screen, the footswitch ... Fender decided to dive head first in the all connected, with Bluetooth, but also Wifi!

At the moment of a number of their competitors, the Mustang GT can be controlled via an application iOS and Android: the Fender Tone app. The Fuse software that used to set up old Mustangs via a computer was set aside, but if you had presets, you can still access them with the new Fender Connect online account that brings all your data to the cloud. Conversely, the Tone application is not compatible with older Mustang models.

The application consists of four parts: one is dedicated to presets and their editing, one searches for additional sounds including presets of artists and other users, another to the creation of original presets and Setlists, and a final global settings (Bluetooth, wifi, tuner, EQ, etc.). The interface is rather rudimentary, but elegant and in tune with the times. We are in line with the Flat Design dear to Apple. The amp reacts to the finger and the eye to the application, but the changes made since the combos do not reverberate in Tone. In addition, a slight latency delays the display of a new preset. However, let's relativise, since at the time we write these lines the application is not yet definitive and it is likely that it will evolve rapidly.

Editing and creating presets allow you to find all the parameters of the Mustang GT. Designing a sound and modifying the soundtrack is even easier than with the amp's display, and this is pushing for experimentation. However, we regret a simplistic color code that only differentiates the effects when placed before or after the amp, where some competitors have adopted icons to immediately target modulations, amp models, delays, Etc.

The balance of the Fender Tone is in the end very positive, but one point appeared quite problematic: it is possible to add as many effects as desired in a preset via the app. However, the amps do not allow to add an infinity of effects. This results in the addition of effects that will simply not appear on the combos ... If the downlink communication is optimal, sending information from the amp to the app could avoid this type of disappointment.

Finally, Fender prides itself on offering the very first amps connected in Wifi. This allows you to update the machine and access the presets on the Cloud. Unfortunately, the procedure from the amp is horribly cumbersome: the combos do not recognize the available connections, you have to enter the SSID code yourself. Fortunately, it is possible to configure the Wifi from the application which makes things easier. Fender also did not get to the end of his idea regarding the updates since they are not done automatically or through a simple menu. It is necessary to turn off the amp and then turn it back on by pressing a button to activate the shift mode. We have known more modern ... Wifi is therefore a great idea on paper, but we are waiting very soon for improvements so that this function brings its share of comfort and innovations.

Pit stop
Now let's take the time to listen to the combos. The following excerpts were recorded with the GT100 model and an Ibanez FR2620 Prestige guitar. This guitar has two humbucker pickups that can be splitted through a 5-way selector, and you'll see that this to its importance. The sound of the amp is captured by a Sennheiser E906 , plugged into a sound card UR22 of Steinberg. The sequencer used for recording is Studio One Prime.

The first third of presets are "basic" essentially composed of an amp and a reverb. As always, there is something to eat at the factory presets, but few sounds are completely missed or drowned by effects, which is too common with this type of amp. It's overall good taste, and it takes a lot of fun to go through the presets of the amp. Let's start listening with the '65 Twin Reverb modeling that simulates the classic Fender classic, featuring a '65 Spring reverb.

2 '65 Twin Gain 1 3 02:33
3 '65 Twin Gain 3 4 02:52

As with all amp modeling on key sounds, the '65 Twin Reverb really reacts to the attack and the types of microphones used. We tried several guitars, and those whose microphones had a high output level were clearly crunching the amp, while the sound was very clear with wiser microphones. It is even difficult to get a purely clear sound with dual mics. It is really necessary to lower the gain to a minimum and, even in this case, small crackling can be heard when the strings are very strongly attacked. We therefore have an excellent respect for the dynamics, but the sensitivity of the amp input can really cause problems if you have a "powerful" guitar. The same is true when using saturation pedals upstream of the amp that accentuate the crackling. There is no problem with the other types of pedals, and the effect loop is welcome.

Here is a burst of sound samples with different amp modeling:

10 British 70 Gain 1 2 01:35

Not surprisingly, the Fender amp models are the most successful, especially the Twin, the Deluxe, or the Bassman. The British vintage sounds are also in the top of the basket. We have less liked modern amps. They are usually thought of for heavy saturations, and these are a little cold and compressed. It is not completely missed, we are far from the honeycomb, but the dynamics is not sufficiently respected and we imagine not coming out very distinctly in a mix. This contrasts with the very good dynamics of the cleans and crunches.

As for the rarities like the Excelsior or the GA-15, they have a very specific sound identity. We can not judge whether these models are faithful to the original amps, but they have the merit to think outside the box. Finally, the Studio Preamp modeling offers a pure clean enough initially without simulation of speaker, which can be very useful to connect pedals or even to modify the sound with software.

As for modeling baffles, it is once again difficult to judge if we find the sound of the originals, but the sounds are very different with treble and bass that respond differently. However, it is regrettable that a big "ploc" is heard during the change of baffle, but it is unlikely that you will have to modify this in full performance.

00:00 00:00

Let's now listen to the different effects available. We used the '65 Twin Reverb modeling for each of the extracts.

15 Overdrive and Fuzz 1:32
16 The 3 modes of Auto wah 01:04

Reverbs are small in small doses. We then quickly feel that they are numerical in the way in which they "go out," which is quite common. The delays are not bad, varied, and, like some reverbs, take advantage of the stereo. This spatialization
Brings a little more pleasant.

Modulations really bring body to sound. The chorus, flangers and phasers thicken the whole, and we really appreciated the effect Vibratone. Nevertheless, the oscillations lack a touch of subtlety. There are also some delusional effects like the Step Filter which acts a bit like an arpeggiator, or a diatonic pitch effect. The basic pitch shifter which acts as an octave is very successful and offers a large amplitude of height with a very fine adjustment.

The average crunches and saturations are successful when the gain of the amps is increased, but we were a little less convinced by overdrive pedals and boost modeling. These simulations are quite caricatured, although they may be useful on a solo by
example. The fuzz have seduced us. The compressors are very configurable, and do what is expected of them without bringing much character. As for the Wah, we did not have the EXP1 pedal to test it, but just like the Autowah it has several settings and three
Very distinct and useful modes: Baby's Cryin, Real McQ, and Super High Q.

Let's finish our soundtrack with an extract not recorded by a microphone, but thanks to the XLR outputs of the GT100:

00:00 00:00

The USB, XLR, and headphone outputs provide a very clear signal and are very convenient. Since you no longer use the physical speakers of the combos, you should not hesitate to use the EQ to rework the sound, especially in the bass. On the other hand, the same problem of input signal is encountered, which sometimes leads to unpleasant crackling.

The importance of the loudspeaker
20170501 011620.JPG
The three models Mustang GT may be very close to each other and embark the same modeling, they sound differently.

First of all, the GT 40 is distinguished by its impressive volume and projection in view of its gauge. It's small, but it sends! The two small HP Full-Range offer a wide frequency spectrum ideal for broadcasting backing tracks, or even to listen to music. They tend however to emphasize the bass, which is nice for the cleans but less for the saturations. So do not hesitate to rework the EQ, and especially lower the bass.

Unlike the GT40, the GT100 and GT200 are equipped with Celestion speakers designed only for the guitar. This is greatly felt when broadcasting an external sound source, and we would have liked that Fender incorporates an additional tweeter like Line 6. Celestion are a little less "bassy" than the HP of the small model, and offer High mediums and more tremendous treble. Note that on these two models, the baffle tends to vibrate. We do not necessarily notice it with a strong enough volume, but by paying attention to it and playing close to the baffle we sometimes hear a small buzz caused by the vibrations. These two models are designed for repetitions and the stage, this small defect remains anecdotal.

Conclusion
The first contact with the new amps of Fender is pleasing. The combos are rather pretty, and the pleasure is immediate thanks to presets of good taste and ample sound especially for the GT40 in relation to its size. But it is especially the excellent LCD screen that seduces and buries
Literally competition.

In terms of modeling, the Mustang GTs carry less than the Line 6 Spider V and their 200 models of amps, speakers and effects, but this quantity is disproportionate for most uses. The Marshall Code had the advantage of offering the choice of the preamp and amplifier stage, but the final number of modelizations is less important than on the last born of Fender. Vox VTXs have a completely different approach and do not bet on quantity. As for the Boss Katana, they have a little more effects (55), but less amp modeling. Fender seems to have observed the competition well and inscribed its amps in a perfect balance between quantity and utility.

In addition, the Mustang GT does not ignore any function (looper, tap tempo, etc.). Add to this the Tone application and the Wifi, and you will not find any equal. However, the prices are similar to those charged by other brands: the GT40 is at 235 €, the GT100 at 385 €, and the GT200 at 529 €.

On the sound side, the GTs are convincing in terms of price. The cleans and small saturations are really successful, and the respect of good dynamics. Vox and its Valvetronix system certainly remain a notch above everyone else on this type of sounds, but the gap is gradually reduced. Conversely, large saturations are disappointing, cold, and too compressed. But do we look for these sounds by buying Fender?

This extremely positive assessment should lead us to an excellent note, but it would be to forget a major flaw highlighted in the context of this test: the exacerbated sensitivity of the input of the combos. Even with the gain to the minimum and amps reputed for their clarity, we got crackling with dual mics. By using humbuckers at very high output level, it becomes difficult to have a real clear sound. If we also take into account the small defects of the application and WiFi connection, the Mustang GT deserve an honest, but disappointing note given the potential of 3.5 / 5. All we have to do now is to hope for a quick correction of these problems, in which case the WGs could become the benchmark in their price range.

Our opinion :

Strong points
Fender exits its comfort zone
Simplicity welcome, while offering a nice panel of sounds and functions
The LCD screen
Integrated Looper
Pilotable via an application
Presets not overloaded in effects and overall satisfactory
USB connection and direct outputs (only on the GT100 and GT200)
Ability to remove HP simus
Convincing sounds especially on the cleans and the crunches ...
Weak points
... but that saturate quickly with microphones at high output level
No full range on the GT100 and GT200 (we would have liked the addition of a tweeter)
Wifi connection not at the moment
Adding unbridled effects to the Fender Tone application

FENDER MUSTANG GT AMPS - JUST LAUNCHED
Posted on May 1, 2017 by Matt Park There have been 0 comments

Mustang-gt-amps
Over the last few years the Fender Mustang amps have certainly gained their fair share of attention and praise for being reliable and accurate sounding modelling amps, so let's take a look at their new generation of modelling amps - The Mustang GT40, GT100 and GT200.
First off, a bit of housekeeping... in the interest of transparency I must say that I have been a user of Fender Mustang amps for the last 5 years or so (currently using the Mustang V amp head and I am very, very pleased with it). I find them to be reliable, the pre-loaded preset sounds are perfectly usable and I have found the accompanying Fender Fuse software to be really handy for tweaking sounds, dialling in my own tone and using it as part of my home-recording rig. I honestly can't see myself selling it any time soon. With that disclaimer out of the way, let's crack on with these new Fender Mustang GT amps.

If you are new to the Mustang range then you should know that they are a series of digital-based amps that come loaded with a huge stack of pre-loaded presets based on famous artists' sounds, as well as clean sounds of iconic amps (not just classic Fenders but also 'American '90s', 'British '60s', 'British '70s', 'British '80s', 'British Color' - if you are unsure what any of these are based on then their icons on the screen of the Mustang amp will certainly give it away).

The Mustang amps also have corresponding footswitches (these are sold separately at perfectly reasonable prices), Mustang GT 200 comes with the footswitch allowing the user to flick between presets or enable/disable the vast array of effects with their feet. One of the main user features that I like about the Mustangs is that you are able to tweak and save effects and amp settings on the amp itself, without the need for hooking up to a computer. This has come in handy many times when sharing equipment with other bands at gigs and allowed me to quickly flick to my settings no matter how much the other band modified it to their taste.

The screen has been given an upgrade to a full-colour LCD display in the new models and should you need to connect the amp to the internet for downloading new sounds you can use the new Mustang GT's Wi-Fi capabilities. Access to sounds via the new Fender Tone App which replaces Fuse making the Mustang GT the world's first Wi-Fi enabled guitar amp. You can also stream music from your phone or music player to your amp using Bluetooth. It's a nice touch from Fender to have the same software, presets and bluetooth & WiFi connectivity across all the models.

Fender Mustang GT40
The Fender Mustang GT 40

On the subject of the different models, let's start small and work our way up... The most compact model is the Mustang GT 40, a 2 x 6.5 inch Celestion loaded combo with 40 watts of power. As with many amps this size, you'd be hard pressed to perform with this amp but as it sounds so good at modest volumes, it would be very well suited for bedroom use or even in a studio.

Fender Mustang GT 100
The Fender Mustang GT100 Guitar Amp

In the middle of the range is the Mustang GT 100, which has (obviously) 100 watt of power and a single 12 inch Celestion speaker. The cabinet of the GT 100 is made from plywood, which has been chosen for its light weight and tonal characteristics. Other differences from the GT40 and the GT100 is that the control panel of the GT100 has knobs for reverb and mid EQ tweaking, which you would have to go the the LCD screen for editing these on the GT40.

Fender Mustang GT200
Fender Mustang GT200 Amp

Sitting pretty at the top of the range is the Mustang GT200 - a 200 watt, 2x12 combo. The inclusion of the second speaker means that effects like stereo delay are delivered with pristine accuracy and impact. One of the advantages of the GT100 and GT200 over the GT40 is the added physical connectivity that can be found on the back of the unit. The addition of left and right XLR outs is useful for professional recording and some live setups, there is also stereo FX send and returns for the stompbox-happy players out there.

From a personal perspective, I am surprised to see that there isn't a head model in the new lineup like there was in the previous generation and I can only speculate as to why this model wasn't carried forward. However, that is my only gripe with the new Mustang GT amps and there is certainly a lot to like about them, namely the Bluetooth streaming, the WiFi capability for downloading additional sounds, the colour screen and the ability to modify the order of the effects in the simulated chain. As you would expect with Fender, the tones and sounds are incredibly accurate and would suit guitarists at any level.

As I said at the beginning, I might be a little bit biased so why not come on down and try out one of these brilliant digital amps for yourself in our music superstore, our guitar team will happily get you plugged in so you can try one out in a trial booth.

OK, Fender finally fixed the Bluetooth connectivity issues with my Samsung phone. Now that it connects properly, it's a fairly good app, and my Mustang GT 40 is MUCH more useful and accessible. You can do everything from the app -- scroll through presets, edit them, reorganize them, create new ones. There are plenty of ways the app could be better, but the basic functions are all right there.
