Hi,
I am at my wits end. Spent hours on this and no luck.

Problem:  There is always Vibrato present when I play guitar synth.  I don't want it!!
Clues:  Its on every preset on my XV2020 sound module.
When I rotate the volume knob on my GK2a pickup it makes it go away as I rotate to zero(like volume off)
When I hook up an expression pedal to the back of my GI20 it stops the vibrato..but when I step on the pedal it resumes.

Help!!! I hate this.  I play piano via my guitar synth rig and this vibrato ruins the entire sound..and many others
I suspect its a GI20 problem..but no searching on my part has given the answer.
    SUGGESTIONS?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Do you have your XV2020 set to receive MODULATION on CC#7 by any chance? Seems like you are saying each time you make what should be a volume adjustment it sets off your LFO as if you were turning the MOD WHEEL. MOD WHEEL is usually set to receive CC#1 on most default MIDI gear. Just a shot in the dark.

It might help if you would give a little more info on your setup too.

I don't have the XV20202 set to that so far as I know...
I ran the editor software and turned off all modulation and it still happens.
It's not an FX thats on..its something deeper. Not sure.
A patch will come up and be fine and then when I turn the GK2a volume pot it causes the modulation to start.
I go to a new patch and the same thing all over..ever patch every time.

One obvious question,
do you have the plug connecting the GK-2A to the normal guitar socket connected (3.5mm to 6.5mm plugs),
as this also provides grounding of the guitar strings and metal bits.
Free "GR-55 FloorBoard" editor software from https://sourceforge.net/projects/grfloorboard/

Do the following

1) Download and read the Roland GI-20 Owners Manual
http://media.rolandus.com/manuals/GI-20_OM.pdf

2) Perform a Factory Reset on the GI-20, this will change the mapping of the GK-Vol control back to MIDI CC#7 (Patch Volume)  not Vibrato Depth as it must currently be assigned to (based upon your observations you reported)

See GI-20 Owner's Manual Page 34
Reset to Default Factory
Settings (Factory Reset)
The procedure for restoring the GI-20's internal settings to
the state they were in when the unit left the factory is called a
"Factory Reset." This procedure allows you to return the
patch parameters for Patches 01–50, pickup sensitivity
settings, MIDI transmission, and other system parameters to
their original factory values.
Here, you can set the GUITAR/BASS switch to select patch
content that is optimized for the use of either a guitar or bass.
* With the factory settings, this is set to patches that are
optimized for the guitar.
The Factory Reset operation undoes any settings you have
changed and discards any edits you have made to its
patches. If you have settings or patches you wish to preserve,
use the Bulk Dump operation (p. 29) to save them, before
performing the Factory Reset operation.
1. Turn off the power to the GI-20.
2. Set GUITAR/BASS to match the instrument you are
using (guitar or bass).
3. Hold down [TUNER (STRING SEL)] and turn on the
power.
"in" appears in the display.

* To cancel the procedure, turn off the power to the GI-20.
4. Press [WRITE].
"Wr" appears in the display and the dot in the display
flashes, and Factory Reset is carried out.
fig.04-02
When Factory Reset is completed, "oF" flashes in the
display.
Never turn off the power while Factory Reset is in
progress. Doing so may damage the unit.
5. Turn off the power to the GI-20.

Elantric,
thank you for posting on this: coming from you I know its a very valid idea.
fwiw:I did read both manuals and did hours of trial and error on parameters that I thought would fix this: tommorrow I'll do the reset and hopefully all will be better.
  THANK YOU!

PS:  My cables are grounded and proper.

Similarly I would consider performing a factory reset on the XV.  You will be able to find the key combination from the manual.  If you don't have a paper manual you can download one from roland us.  It will also tell you how to do a sysex dump of any patches that may have been changed

It is much more likely the problem is with the GI but it's still possible that there is some buried setting on the XV or that there is some other software problem

Agreed!

XV-2020 Owners Manual  - See page 12
When using the XV-2020 for the first time, start by returning the settings to their factory defaults so that the XV-2020 operates as described in the procedures in the owner's manual.
This returns all settings stored in memory in the XV-2020 to the values they had when the unit was shipped from the factory.
If there is important data you've created that's stored in memory, all such data is discarded, and everything is returned to the factory defaults when a Factory Reset is performed. If you have data that you want to keep, choose [Save SVD File...] from the File menu in XV Editor (included with the XV-2020). Alternatively, you could use an external MIDI device to send a message requesting all data (p. 143).
You cannot carry out this procedure when "DEMO" is selected with the [CATEGORY/BANK] knob.
FACTORY RESET
While holding down [VOLUME], press [VALUE].
The indication in the display begins flashing, and the mode changes.
Turn [CATEGORY/BANK] to choose PIANO (UTILITY). Rotate [VALUE] until "Fct" appears in the display.
Press [VALUE]; "Sur" flashes in the display, and a confirmation screen appears.
Press [VALUE] once more to execute the factory reset.
*To cancel the procedure, while holding down [VOLUME] and pressing [VALUE]

You guys are GREAT!!!!!!
Thank you so much..I'm off to do the reset!!

GtrGeorge

I reset only the GI20 and that did the trick. No need to reset the XV2020.
  THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I no longer have the Kate Hepburn Vibrato on EVERYTHING.
               You guys rule!
