Our local cell tower was out, coincidentally corresponding to the time of the site being down, so  no interweb for a few days anyway.

Was the site hacked? It would be interesting to know what happened and how the heck do you even go about fixing it.

Yes, there was an attack.

Our old ISP was not helpful; support was terrible.  Would respond to trouble tickets many hours later, with a "Things look good now." or a "There is a lot of activity on your site.  Might wanna clean that up."...  😐  (Yes, I'm paraphrasing...)

So we moved to a new host, with far better support.  Even a security team to help out.

We have had issues with the old ISP's support before, but not bad enough to force a move.  This did it.

Once on the new host, we reinstalled all the software from scratch to be safe.

Note to folks who want to run their own site: Avoid hosts owned by EIG. They buy hosts, & thin the support staff, creating brain drain, and support suffers horribly.  (https://researchasahobby.com/full-list-eig-hosting-companies-brands/)

one reason not to use the same password for other accounts. Also if a hacker gets your email address, watch out for phishing attempts with the hacker using other personal info or pretending to be someone from a hacked website.

So if anyone says they are Chrish and needs money because Chrish is in jail in Somalia, check with me here first so you'll know where to send that money. ;D

Hackers are much more on the case than you would think... ip, darkweb hacklists, email addresses etc, And your 'real name' equals a bingo/jackpot win. In no time they will build up a picture of you, and what you are about - spear-phishing bogus emails here we come! One of the biggest dupes is an email from a hacked close friend email account - "Bill, have a listen to this...httpxxxx".

Chrish and philjnx, sorry to hear you've been detained in Somalia. Give me your giftcard details and will send funds for your flight home. Is £1000GBP alright? Hope the prison food is ok. :(

Sorry Bill, you misled me into thinking you had a sense of humour. It's a shame you feel the need to be rude.

I was not being rude, your history comments againts my posts have a negative feel. Can anyone name me a person here at the forum who is able to record/play a GK separate v-guitar string with a noise-floor of -103dB? Digging deeper, and it's negative, perhaps you're raw feelings are something to do with old English v Welsh vibes. Comfortable Lies versus uncomfortable truths?

I fell for a email phishing scam several years ago. They pretended to be Microsoft employees asking me to verify the code that they just sent me.

I got the code and gave it to them which allowed them to enter my account and reset my password.

What they did was signed into my email and requested a reset password code. That code was then sent to me at the same time they asked me to verify the code that they had just sent me.

People on my contact list got email stating that I was in jail in Somalia and to send money. Of course my friends knew I wasn't in Somalia.

I did loose that account and was kind of bummed that Microsoft didn't apply the 2 forms of verification I had on file.

Microsoft also didn't notify me that someone was trying to sign into my account the way many other companies do on a regular basis when I legitimately sign into those accounts.

Folks, please.  No need for further back & forth on that...
