Download the Boss Katana macOS USB driver and follow the installation Instructions in the README file
(hint - its not automatic  - you have to follow the instructions in the README file contained inside the  "katana_macd_v100.tgz" file

Boss Katana ASIO AUDIO USB Driver for Windows
https://www.boss.info/global/support/by_product/katana-100/updates_drivers/d85d05e0-6363-46a4-bb36-b6eb5ab75270/

PLEASE READ THE "README.TXT" file that is included and pops up after installation
( 90% of ALL problems with Roland/Boss computer connectivity via USB occurs from folks who disregard following the supplied "README instructions contained inside the zip / rar/ tgz files .

For Windows users - understand the Roland / Boss ASIO USB drivers are not "ASIO Multi-client type" -

QuoteI noticed that when recording out of the Katana's USB port, sound is not two-way to the speaker, but it is to the headphone jack. :dunno
That's by design DAW Audio only feeds Headphone jack. Detailed in the block diagram

"* No signal from the USB will be output from the Speaker * "

For recording the lowest latency Boss Katana Amp's 24 bit USB audio with a Windows PC, either:

* Install the Boss Katana USB Driver and configure the Boss Katana amp as your DAW's USB Audio interface and monitor your DAW audio with the Katana Amp's Headphone jack while tracking guitars

or

* Use the Katana's Phones/ Rec Output into your the Line input on your DAW's existing audio interface

Roland /Boss intent is to allow for re-amping

Gutavz wrote>

connect Katana Line Out to Katana Aux In; and this is it! Great solution for jamming to PC.

So read the  Katana USB driver README.htm -

Katana USB driver README.htm - as PDF versions for Windows ASIO and OSX Core Audio are attached below

ALL Katanas function as 24 bit USB audio interfaces

[Mac USB Audio]
KATANA Input 1,2 = Processed Guitar tone with Amp modeling / FX
KATANA Input 3,4 = Dry Guitar tone ( as source for re-amping)

KATANA Output 1,2 = For feeding Mac USB Audio to Katana  Headphones for monitoring. ( * stereo source is mixed to Mono)
KATANA Output 3,4 = For playback of dry guitar tracks from DAW  for re-amping)

If you read the "README"file inside the Katana USB Driver, it details the available Recording options

[Windows USB Audio]
PRIMARY (KATANA) = Processed Guitar tone with Amp modeling / FX
SECONDARY (KATANA) = Dry Guitar tone
*   If you've specified a different name in the "Sound" settings of the Control Panel, the name you specified will be displayed.

FWIW - Windows 10 is very moody when it comes to installing the Boss Katana USB Driver for Win10

You are at the mercy of the state of the Microsoft Server to distribute your signed driver

some work arounds exist

QuoteSince I'm a tech I figured it out. (how to install Roland / Boss USB Audio / MIDI Driver on Windows 10)

First, you can't go get the drivers. Stupid Windows 10, and I say that as someone who really likes Windows 10, had the Katana driver as a WINDOWS UPDATE? What the hell? So I had to run a full Windows update to get the driver. Damn. That is not so easy.

Then even after that, I couldn't get the Tone Studio to install. After clicking the .exefile it just wouldn't run. Even when I ran it as administrator. Then I realized that Tone Studio uses Adobe Air, one of the most buggy pieces of software I have even dealt with in my 20 years as a tech. Once I realized that I went to the adobe site and downloaded Adobe Air. Rean the Tone Studio .exe file and everything is good.

But who in thir right mind is going to try all that? Especially the average guitarist who this amp is designed for. All this is going in my notes for my review. Not liking the software so far. At least the installation...

Cautions and Limitations

Sound interruption or other less-than-perfect outcomes may be experienced if your computer's performance and specifications are somewhat inadequate. The types of applications you use and the way in which you use them can also influence the experience you receive.
If the PC is started up while the KATANA is still connected to the PC with its power turned on, the driver may not be loaded properly and you may not be able to use the KATANA. In such cases, connect the KATANA to another USB port or turn on the power of KATANA after the PC starts up.
If the KATANA does not work correctly after resuming from Sleep mode, you should exit all applications that use the KATANA, and then turn the power of the KATANA off and on again.
If the USB cable is disconnected and reconnected while the KATANA is in use, or if the power of the KATANA is turned off, then on again, it may stop operating correctly. If this occurs, after resuming, you should exit all applications that use the KATANA, and turn the power of the KATANA off, then on again.
If your computer was experiencing a heavy processing load, such as when accessing a CD-ROM Drive or network while the KATANA was being used, the KATANA may no longer operate correctly. If this occurs, stop the playback or recording, then try starting playback or recording over again. If you are still unable to play back or record, quit all programs that are using the KATANA, then turn the KATANA off and then on again.
Audio clicks and pops may occur during playback or recording if you connect or disconnect other USB devices (such as USB memory) or turn another USB device on/off while using the KATANA.
In some cases, you may not obtain the expected level of performance if you're using a USB-connected hard disk at the same time as the KATANA. Do not use a USB-connected hard disk as the storage destination for the audio that you're playing back or recording.

About the items in the Settings dialog box

SAMPLE RATE
Displays the present sample rate.
To change the sample rate, select a sample rate from the menu.
*   When the sampling rate is switched, a small pop noise may be heard, but this does not indicate a malfunction.

Audio Buffer Size
You can adjust the audio input/output buffer size. (By default, this will be the sixth position from the left.)
Decreasing the buffer size will shorten the latency and improve realtime performance, but might make it more likely that you will experience audio clicks and pops, depending on your computer's processing power and the song data load.
Increasing the buffer size will lengthen the latency, but will make audio streaming more stable, and it will be less likely for audio clicks and pops to occur.
In general, you'll probably want to decrease the buffer size for better realtime performance if you're playing a software synthesizer in real time, or if you're monitoring an audio input that's being passed through your DAW software.
Conversely, you can increase the buffer size to prevent audio clicks and pops if you're recording or playing back song data that contains numerous tracks and presents a heavy processing load.
By changing the buffer size as appropriate for your situation, you can obtain the right balance between realtime performance and audio streaming stability.
* Note!
If you use an application with an audio equipment test function, after changing the buffer size, carry out a test.

ASIO Buffer Size
This is the buffer size that can be set by the ASIO application.

"Match with the ASIO sample rate" check box
This option matches the Windows sound sample rate, e.g. MME, DirectSound, or WASAPI, with the ASIO sample rate. Select this check box when using an ASIO-compatible application concurrently with a Windows sound-compatible application such as Windows Media Player.

"Show README" button
This button displays the README file (this document).

A number such as "2-" is now displayed at the beginning of the device name

Could you have connected the KATANA to a different USB port?
If you connect the KATANA to a different USB port, the operating system may automatically add a number to the beginning of the device name.
Even if this occurs, it will not cause any problems with the operation of the KATANA.
*   If you want to restore the device name that does not have this added number, connect the KATANA to the same USB port as when you installed it, or reinstall the driver as described in "To reinstall."
The screen indicates "Device currently used by another application." and driver settings cannot be made

Are you using another application?
The driver settings cannot be changed while it is being used by an application.

If the Windows monitoring function is enabled, it won't be possible to change the driver settings.
Refer to "Could the Windows monitoring function be enabled?" and disable monitoring.

No sound is heard; cannot playback or record

Was the driver installed correctly?

Could the KATANA be in use by other software?

Did you make settings as described in "Before you begin" so that the KATANA driver could be used?
The KATANA cannot be used unless you make these settings. Refer to the sections on "Before you begin."

Could you have entered Sleep mode during playback or recording?
If the KATANA does not work correctly after resuming from Sleep mode, you should exit all applications that use the KATANA, and then turn the power of the KATANA off and on again.

During playback or recording, did you turn the power of the KATANA on/off, or disconnect and reconnect the USB cable?
If you turn the power of the KATANA on/off or disconnect and reconnect the USB cable during playback or recording, the KATANA will no longer be able to play back or record. Stop playback or recording, and then start playback or recording once again. If you are still unable to play back or record, quit all programs that are using the KATANA, then turn the KATANA off and then on again.

Try adjusting the audio buffer size of the driver
If the size of the driver's audio buffer is too small, sound may not be produced, or it may be impossible to carry out normal playback and recording.
In such cases, you should refer to "Changing/checking driver settings," and increase the size of the buffer.

Sound played by your computer is inaudible or too soft

Could you have turned down the volume of the device or application in the Volume Mixer?
The system's Volume Mixer lets you adjust the volume for each device or application.
Open the "Control Panel," and switch "View by:" to "Category."
Click "Hardware and Sound," and then click "Adjust system volume."
The Volume Mixer will appear. From the "Device" pulldown menu, choose the device that you're using for playback, and adjust the volume.
*   Alternatively you can open the Volume Mixer by right-clicking the speaker icon located in the lower right of the Desktop and choosing "Open Volume Mixer."
Are you using voice communications software?
If you're using voice communications software, the volume of the audio device might be automatically adjusted according to the status of communications.
If so, disable automatic volume adjustment as follows.
Open "Control Panel," click "Hardware and Sound," and then click "Sound."
*   If the icon view is selected for the Control Panel, click "Sound."
In the "Communications" tab, change the setting of the item "When Windows detects communications activity" to "Do nothing."
Click [OK] to close "Sound."
Part of the playback is wrong: e.g., notes are broken off prematurely, or some notes are lost

Problems may be solved by making the settings shown below.

Try adjusting the audio buffer size of your software
If your software allows you to adjust the audio buffer size, try changing the setting.
Normally, clicks and pops can be eliminated by increasing the buffer size.

Try adjusting the audio buffer size of the driver
If your software does not allow you to adjust the buffer size, or if adjusting the buffer size in your software does not solve the problem, you may be able to solve the problem by changing the driver's audio input/output buffer size.
Try adjusting the buffer size as described in "Changing/checking driver settings."

Try updating the driver of your display adaptor
You may be able to eliminate clicks and pops by updating the driver for the display adaptor installed in your computer.

Windows Update / Microsoft Update
You may be able to solve the problem by updating your system with "Windows Update" or "Microsoft Update" provided by Microsoft.

Check the power management settings
Open "Control Panel," click "System and Security," and then click "Power Options."
*   If the icon view is selected for the Control Panel, click "Power Options."
In "Choose or customize a power plan," choose "High performance."
*   If the "High performance" plan is not shown, click "Show additional plans."
In the High performance area, click "Change plan settings."
Click "Change advanced power settings."
In the Advanced Settings, click the "+" symbol for "Hard Disk," and click the "+"symbol for "Turn off hard disk after" to open it.
Click "Setting (Minutes)," and click the down arrow to change the setting to "Never."
Click [OK] to close the Power Options window.
Close the "Edit Plan Settings" screen.
"Performance Options" settings of System Properties
Open "Control Panel," click "System and Security," and then click "System."
*   If the icon view is selected for the Control Panel, click "System."
At the left, click "Advanced system settings."
If a dialog box regarding User Account Control appears, click [Yes].
*   If you are asked to enter the password of an Administrator account, sign in to Windows as a user whose Account Type is Administrator, then perform the settings again.
Click [Settings] of the Performance section, and then click the [Advanced] tab.
Select "Background services," and click [OK].
Click [OK] to close "System Properties."
Could the Windows monitoring function be enabled?
If the Windows monitoring function is enabled, the input sound might be heard in duplicate (doubled), or a feedback loop (oscillation) might occur.
If so, disable the Windows monitoring function as follows.
Open "Control Panel," click "Hardware and Sound," and then click "Sound."
*   If the icon view is selected for the Control Panel, click "Sound."
In "Recording," select the device that you're using for input (such as KATANA "PRIMARY"), and click "Properties."
*   If the above WAVE ports cannot be selected, a problem may have occurred. Refer to "Troubleshooting."
Open the "Listen" tab, and clear the check box "Listen to this device."
Click [OK] to close "Properties."
Click [OK] to close "Sound."
Audio clicks and pops occur in the playback or recording immediately after the system has started up, or immediately after the computer has been woken from a Sleep state
Wait a few moments before you perform playback or recording.

Clicks or pops may occur in the sound if a LAN is operating
Try disabling the LAN in the Device Manager.

Playback or recording is interrupted, and then you cannot resume playback or recording

Was your computer experiencing a heavy processing load?
If your computer was experiencing a heavy processing load while the KATANA was being used, the KATANA may no longer operate correctly. If this occurs, stop the playback or recording, then try starting playback or recording over again.
If you are still unable to play back or record, quit all programs that are using the KATANA, then turn the KATANA off and then on again.

QuoteNeed some help with the software, actually the driver installation. When I attempted to install the driver on my Win 7 64 bit SP 1 machine I was informed that my version of Windows does not recognize the driver signature and will not install it. I uninstalled it and tried again, still no soap. I uninstalled it again, downloaded it again from the Boss site (in case it had been corrupted somehow), tried to reinstall from the second download but still get that message and the failure to install. Any one run into this or have any idea how to get around it?

I had the same issue. Here's the work around that actually works. You need to temporarily disable driver signature enforcement:

Step 1. Enter the Advanced Options menu.
Windows 7

To enter the Advanced Options menu in Windows 7 S:

1 Close all programs and reboot your computer.
2 Press the "F8" key as your computer is booting up, before the appearance of the Windows logo.
3 When the "Windows Advanced Options Menu" appears on your screen, use your keyboard arrow keys to highlight the "Disable Driver Signature Enforcement" option and then press "ENTER".

4 once your computer is up and running install the driver. If it still doesn't work, go to the device manager and manually update the katana driver by browsing to it. That should do it.

This is what I do as well. There should be a security update for Win 7 out there to resolve this, but my Win 7 installation has seen so much abuse it fails to install *any* updates now.

Also, Microsoft has removed and reissued several updates related to SHA-2 (driver) signatures. Because the updates were utterly broken. Quite a bit of drama surrounding this, especially because it's causing pretty serious security issues.
So the driver signature problems probably aren't even your fault, you most likely just ran windows updates on the wrong day of the week.

Make it simpler and avoid Windows 10...  Gotta love an operating system that makes its own decisions as to when updates will be applied and computer restarted.  A pox on Microsoft.

I strongly believe that good software should empower you to have better control over the hardware you own and how it behaves.

With Windows 10 I feel like they dug up clippy from the old office code and gave it more power than the admin.

"I've installed automatic updates for you and agreed with the terrible privacy terms for you by default. Anything else I can help you with? Would you like to read the FAQ because your drivers stopped working from that update?"

Yes it performs better. Yes they've finally done some desperately needed kernel work, but good grief what a non-OS this is.

Agreed - with Windows 10 its apparent Microsoft still thinks the public only does Facebook, or tasks defined by Microsoft Bob  - and who cares about the 0.0001% doing real time audio processing with their computer .

I have the same problem with one of my windows 7 systems. Just won't update. Gave up and using Linux Mint for music teaching now. Rock solid and stable, no viruses, no crashes. By contrast my one windows 10 gaming system has managed to nuke itself twice requiring restoring from backups after it refused to boot. All the major updates (creators, anniversary) also caused major problems. I only use windows 10 for 3d gaming because nvidia won't enable it on linux - otherwise I'd bin windows 10 completely. The quality of microsofts coding and testing seems to have gone down the pan over the last few years. Even when windows 10 does work I never know for how long before they break something again !

QuoteGood news: I've just received the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (1709), and it solved my problem:
No more "KATANA connection failure. Please select external MIDI/AUDIO device connection." error message in Boss Tone Studio.

I was previously running version 1703.

Success!

I finally managed to get the USB driver working for the Katana in OS 10.13.3. Long story, but when you first try to install the driver, a message pops up saying you need to 'allow' the driver (apparently that happened, but I don't recall seeing it). However, if you don't do this from within System Preferences within 30 minutes, the option to 'allow' disappears (why? I don't know). As a consequence, the driver remains disabled and Boss Tone Studio can't see the Katana.

So, I uninstalled the driver, and reinstalled it. Then went to System Preferences > Security and Privacy > General, and the "allow" button returned. I pressed it and, voila!, everything works.

Owning a mac I had been lulled into the expectation that whatever I plug in just works straight away.

The only options in the preferences that I could find were "Apple only" and "Apple and identified developers" (which I had selected). But, it seems Apple don't consider Roland an identified developer, so the driver was disabled.

I hope this might help others with the same problem on a mac.

Cheers,
Tony

That's by design DAW Audio only feeds Headphone jack. Detailed in the block diagram

"* No signal from the USB will be output from the Speaker * "

I was surprised to discover this when my new Katana arrived today and I plugged it in to the USB port on my laptop for the first time. Spent ages trying to work out why no sound was coming out, then noticed the little note right there in the manual. Anyone know the rationale for this? It means the Katana can't be used as a fancy USB speaker. :-(

Why didn't Boss just allow you to mute the speaker using the Standby switch or some other USB-controlled setting?

Curious,
Graham

They disabled USB audio playback direct to the Katana internal speaker because its only a limited frequency response guitar speaker and would sound bad as an audio playback device

FWIW - Katana Air with its stereo full range internal speakers does allow USB audio playback to its internal speakers.

I can use my Katana 50 as a speaker.
In windows sound option set Secondary Katana as default output device.

If you use Amplitube4 and you want amplitube to play in the katana speaker:

for DRY signal:
-> windows audio
       input device -> SECONDARY
       left channel: input 1
       right channel: input 2

       Output device -> SECONDARY
       left channel: output 1
       right channel: output 2

PRIMARY enables the KATANA effects.
